The West Coast trip was a big one for rejections at the rim as Lopez blocked a season-high five shots at Phoenix on the first game of the trip. Through November 20, Lopez had 867 career blocks and was averaging 1.7 blocks per game this season. Lopez surpassed George Johnson, who played for the Nets from 1977-80 and in 1984-85, leading the league in blocks while with the Nets in 1977-78. Lopez ranks eighth among all active NBA players with a percentage of 4.9.

By Tom Dowd

From the time he joined the Brooklyn Nets last season on a 10-day contract, Sean Kilpatrick never acted like a guy fighting for his professional life.

But he always played like it.

“They have a chip on their shoulder,” said Brooklyn Nets coach of players that have shared Kilpatrick’s path through the D-League to the NBA. “Sean has a chip, there’s no doubt about it. I think there’s an angry chip and a healthy chip, and his is healthy. It’s in a good spirit.

“He’s not putting anybody down, but he feels like he didn’t get what he deserved. His personality is such that he keeps that chip on his shoulder. Every practice he’s trying to prove himself. I don’t think it’s sunk in, you’re an NBA player now. But I love that he has that chip.”

While he was playing to prove he belonged through two 10-day contracts before signing a multi- year deal in mid-March, Kilpatrick embraced the opportunity and the experience with an infectious enthusiasm. It was easy to find in an active and upbeat social media presence.

15 | 16 BROOKLYN NETS BASKETBALL 15 Quite simply, it’s always been clear there and play your game. Me being able to ME BEING ABLE TO BE be one of the guys on the team that can pick my teammates up with my spirit, I think that’s something that’s ONE OF THE GUYS ON contagious and it helps our team in a tremendous way.” THE TEAM THAT CAN

That spirit carried Kilpatrick through a PICK MY TEAMMATES two-year grind to earn the opportunity he got from the Nets. After earning UP WITH MY SPIRIT, I multiple first team All-American citations as a senior at Cincinnati, he THINK THAT’S SOMETHING went undrafted in 2014. At the time, Kilpatrick was tearing up the D-League with a league-leading SEAN KILPATRICK 26.4 points per game for the Delaware 87ers. He’s Kilpatrick opened up the season learning these skills. We averaging 16.6 points per game had him running the point the whole coming off the bench during the first day in practice today. So I think for the seven games. He had 18 points and time being, good for him. But along the way, the Nets were getting thin at point guard. When Lin hurt his left hamstring against Detroit, Kilpatrick joined Isaiah Whitehead in filling in at the point, with the rookie starting and Kilpatrick often handling the ball down the stretch in the fourth quarter.

When a concussion took Whitehead out of play, Kilpatrick made his first career start against the Knicks and followed up with 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists in a win in Phoenix three days later.

“We’ve asked him to do everything,” said Atkinson. “We’ve asked him to come off the bench and score. Now we’re asking him to play point guard. He started at point guard. 24 KILPATRICK’S BIG NIGHT Sean Kilpatrick lit up Barclays Center with 38 points in a double-overtime win over the on November 29. With career highs in points and rebounds (14), Kilpatrick registered his second career double-double. With 20 points in the fourth quarter and another 11 in the two overtime sessions, Kilpatrick became just the second player in the last 15 seasons (Ray Allen) to score 20-plus points in the fourth quarter and 10-plus in overtime. Kilpatrick’s 38/14 line was the first by a Net since 2007 (Vince Carter) and sixth since the 1983-84 season. He’s also one of just three players ( and Karl-Anthony Towns) to do it in the NBA this season through December 7. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY Through December 1, the Nets were one of seven NBA teams with at least nine players playing 20-plus minutes per game and one of just three without a player averaging 30 minutes per game. Brook Lopez (27.9), Trevor Booker (27.6), Bojan Bogdanovic (27.4) and Sean Kilpatrick (27.1) were at the top for court time. TO THE RIM Through December 7, the Nets ranked second in the NBA in drives per game with 34.0 and third in drive points per game with 21.7. Brooklyn ranked second in the league in attempts on drives.Sean Kilpatrick averaged 6.6 drives and 3.3 field goal attempts per game, shooting 50 percent on those tries. AGAINST THE LAKERS This is the second of the Nets’ two meetings with the Lakers this season. Los Angeles prevailed over the Nets at home on November 15, 125-118. Brook Lopez had 30 points and 10 rebounds and Bojan Bogdanovic had 29 points. Los Angeles point guard D’Angelo Russell had 32 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. The Nets and Lakers are each ranked in the top 10 in pace, with the Nets second at 103.8 possessions per 48 minutes and the Lakers sixth at 101.5. Under new head coaches (Kenny Atkinson for Brooklyn and Luke Walton for Los Angeles), both teams are playing much faster than a year ago, when each was in the bottom half of the league in pace. This is the second of a seven-game road trip for the Lakers that began with Monday’s game at Sacramento.

The Brooklyn Nets welcomed families to Barclays Center for a Thanksgiving dinner after they played the just before the holiday.

“It’s Thanksgiving, so you always want to be aware of the blessings God has given you or me and how we can be thankful,” said Jeremy Lin. “I think a big part of understanding gratitude is helping other people and serving other people.”

The event was presented by Key Food, the Official Supermarket of the Brooklyn Nets, in conjunction with City Harvest. City Harvest delivers 150,000 pounds of food daily and 55 million pounds each year to soup kitchens, food pantries and other community food programs, collecting food that would otherwise go to waste through relationships with farms, grocers, restaurants and manufacturers.

At Barclays Center, 200 Brooklynites were greeted by the entire Nets team, along with general manager and Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment CEO Brett Yormark.

Guests received a ticket to that afternoon’s game and a turkey to go, and enjoyed dinner at the arena’s 40/40 CLUB & Restaurant presented by American Express featuring turkey, chicken, codfish and full table of side dishes.
