HAWKS’ TRIO HEADLINES RESERVES FOR 2015 NBA ALL-STAR GAME -- Duncan Earns 15 th Selection, Tied for Third Most in All-Star History -- NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2015 – Three members of the Eastern Conference-leading Atlanta Hawks -- Al Horford , Paul Millsap and Jeff Teague -- headline the list of 14 players selected by the coaches as reserves for the 2015 NBA All-Star Game, the NBA announced today. Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors earned his first All-Star selection, joining teammate and starter Stephen Curry to give the Western Conference-leading Warriors two All-Stars for the first time since Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway in 1993. The 64 th NBA All-Star Game will tip off Sunday, Feb. 15, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The game will be seen by fans in 215 countries and territories and will be heard in 47 languages. TNT will televise the All-Star Game for the 13th consecutive year, marking Turner Sports' 30 th year of NBA All- Star coverage. The Hawks’ trio is joined in the East by Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat, the Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving . This is the 11 th consecutive All-Star selection for Wade and the 10 th straight nod for Bosh, who becomes only the third player in NBA history to earn five trips to the All-Star Game with two different teams (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kevin Garnett). Butler, who leads the NBA in minutes (39.5 per game) and has raised his scoring average from 13.1 points in 2013-14 to 20.1 points this season, makes his first All-Star appearance. Irving, the MVP of the 2014 All-Star Game, is an All-Star for the third time in four NBA seasons. Horford, Millsap and Teague comprise the first trio of All-Stars for the Hawks since John Drew, Eddie Johnson and Dan Roundfield in 1980. For Horford, it’s his third All-Star berth and first since 2011. Millsap, the only player in the East averaging at least 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals, will play in his second consecutive All-Star Game. Teague, who is averaging career highs in points (17.0) and assists (7.5), is a first-time All-Star in his sixth NBA season. Joining Thompson as reserves in the West are LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers), Tim Duncan (San Antonio Spurs), Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder), James Harden (Houston Rockets) and Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers). Aldridge, who is averaging a career-high 23.6 points, is an All-Star for the fourth time. It’s the 15 th All-Star nod for Duncan, who joins Garnett and Shaquille O’Neal with the third-most selections in history behind Abdul-Jabbar (19) and Kobe Bryant (17). Durant, the all-time leader in All-Star Game scoring average (30.6), secured his sixth All-Star selection. Harden, the NBA’s leading scorer (27.3 ppg), makes his third consecutive trip to the All-Star Game since joining the Rockets in 2012. Paul, the only player in the NBA averaging at least 17.0 points, 9.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals, earned his eighth All-Star selection. Westbrook, who is averaging career highs in points (25.2) and rebounds (5.9), was named an All-Star for the fourth time. -- more -- PAGE TWO 2015 NBA All-Star Reserves Announced Selected to start in the East -- through NBA All-Star Balloting 2015 presented by Sprint -- were John Wall (Washington Wizards), Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors), LeBron James (Cavaliers), Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks) and Pau Gasol (Bulls). Voted to start in the West were Curry (Warriors), Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers), Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans), Blake Griffin (Clippers) and Marc Gasol (Memphis Grizzlies). NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will select the replacement for any player unable to participate in the All-Star Game. If the injured player is a starter, the head coach of that team will determine who replaces him in the starting lineup. The 14 reserves were chosen by the 30 NBA head coaches, who were asked to vote for seven players in their respective conferences -- two guards, three frontcourt players and two players regardless of position. They were not permitted to vote for players from their own team. The East and West All-Star coaches and coaching staffs were determined by the best record in the conference through games played on Sunday, Feb. 1. Atlanta’s Mike Budenholzer and his staff will coach the East and Golden State’s Steve Kerr and his staff will lead the West. NBA All-Star 2015 in New York City will bring together some of the most talented and passionate players in the league’s history for a global celebration of the game. Along with the All-Star Game, TNT will also air the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge on Friday, Feb. 13, and State Farm All-Star Saturday Night on Saturday, Feb. 14. The BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge and State Farm All-Star Saturday night will take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Other events at Barclays Center include the NBA Development League All-Star Game presented by Kumho Tire and the NBA Development League Dream Factory presented by Boost Mobile on Sunday, Feb. 15, airing on NBA TV. Madison Square Garden will host Friday night’s ESPN-televised Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.     NBA Commissioner’s Comments On Older Coaches Is A Lesson To All Employers Returning To Work Insights 6.08.20 The National Basketball Association made national headlines last week by announcing its season would resume later this summer. That same night, league commissioner Adam Silver also garnered national attention – and criticism – when he said that older coaches may not be able to sit with their teams on the sidelines during games. In an interview on TNT’s “Inside the NBA,” Silver said that “some older coaches may not be able to be the bench coach in order to protect them.” Silver’s comments immediately drew criticism, including from one of the “older coaches,” 65-year- old Alvin Gentry, the coach of the New Orleans Pelicans. “That doesn't make sense. How can I coach that way?” Gentry told ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne, adding that he does not think that older coaches should be “singled out.” As noted in one of our firm's recent newsletter articles, a recent AARP study found that individuals 65 or older comprised 19.3% of the U.S. workforce. Employers are understandably concerned about their older employees, considering that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that 80% of COVID-19-related deaths reported in the U.S. have been in adults 65 years of age and older. The controversy around Silver’s comments, however, should be a lesson for employers who are trying to figure out how to return to work safely. Trying to “protect” older employees may leave employers susceptible to age discrimination lawsuits.

Introduction In the 2017-18 NBA playoffs, Russell Westbrook scored 46 points on 43 shot attempts in a 96-91 loss to the Utah Jazz, ending the Oklahoma City Thunder's season. At the time, many popular media figures conjectured that having one player dominate field goal attempts in this way would limit the Thunder's success. While scoring 46 points in a playoff basketball game is an impressive feat for any one player, its impact on the win column is moderated by the fact that it required 43 attempts. At its core, this critique is about efficiency. Modern discussion around efficiency in the NBA typically focuses on either individual player efficiency or shot selection. Conceptually, the foundation for shot selection efficiency is simple: shots at the rim and 3-point shots have the highest eXpected points per shot, so teams should prioritize these high-value shots. The idea underlying individual player efficiency is also straightforward; scoring more points on the same number of shot attempts increases a team’s chances of winning. However, implicit in any discussion of player efficiency is the idea that inefficient players have a negative impact because basketball is a team sport. We are concerned with efficiency not just because a given player is inefficient, but because inefficient players take shot opportunities away from teammates that may have higher value. In other words, if Westbrook was surrounded by dismal shooters his 43 shot attempts might appear more defensible, but if his inordinate number of attempts prevented highly efficient shots from other players, then he has caused shots to be inefficiently distributed among the players on the team and decreased their winning potential.

This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.
