Abstract : This work analyses the coronation’s process of Norwegian kings in the second half of XII century, with special attention to the ceremony for ascension of Magnús Erlingsson (11561184) to the norwegian throne. From the contraposition of many sources of XI-XIII centuries and with the support of royal religion concept of Jacques Le Goff, the present work delineated the transformation of a boy in a king, especially from a detailed analysis of Privilegiebrev (Letter of Privileges , c. 1163-1164), source that explores the potential of christian religion to legitimate a monarch and a dynasty under the Norwegian civil wars of the XII century. -

Nidarosdomen Og Nidaros Erkebispesete

ROYAL SANCTITY AND THE WRITING OF HISTORY ON THE PERIPHERIES OF LATIN CHRISTENDOM, C. 1000 - 1200 Elizabeth Hasseler A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History. Chapel Hill 2018 Approved by: Marcus G. Bull Jessica A. Boon Flora Cassen Jehangir Malegam Brett E. Whalen © 2018 Elizabeth Hasseler ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Elizabeth Hasseler: Royal Saints and the Writing of History on the Peripheries of Latin Christendom, c. 1000 - 1200 (Under the Direction of Marcus G. Bull) In the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the edges of Latin Christendom were expanding outwards as new peoples along its northern and eastern peripheries converted to the Christian faith, including the Danes, Norwegians, and Hungarians. Closely related to this process of Christianization was the centralization of traditionally disunited peoples into unitary polities under the rule of new royal dynasties. These early kings used their novel political authority to patronize religious men and houses, found episcopal institutions, and enforce Christian observance amongst their peoples, and in turn they wielded the spiritual legitimacy offered by their new faith to bolster their dynastic ambitions. Founder-kings such as Knútr IV of Denmark, Óláfr II Haraldsson of Norway, Stephen I of Hungary, and Ladislaus I of Hungary were central to the emergence of their Christian kingdoms: and in death, they came to be venerated as their peoples’ first Christian saints. This dissertation explores the centrality of royal sanctity to the historical traditions of medieval Norway, Denmark, and Hungary. -
Historical Dictionary of the Vikings

For more than three centuries, small but intrepid bands of Scandinavians used Historical longships to launch lightning raids on their European neighbors to colonize new lands in the east and west and exchange furs for wine, spices, and silver. Dictionary Historical Significant changes also occurred at home, as the local kings extended their power, Norse paganism lost ground to Christianity, and new towns and ports Dictionary thrived as a result of increased contact with the world. And this new world was amazingly vast, stretching over the British Isles, much of continental Europe, into the far reaches of Russia and the Middle East, and to an undetermined extent, even North America. of the There were so many expeditions, under so many leaders, to so many places, and for so many purposes that it is difficult to track events. Moreover, much of the information is shrouded in mystery because few archaeological remains Vikings and even fewer written documents corroborate the sagas. This Historical Dictionary of the Vikings helps fill the void by providing information on major historical figures, important battles and treaties, key works, and archae- ological finds. This dictionary not only presents the big picture, but also examines the everday aspects of how people lived and worked. A chronology, detailed and annotated bibliographies for different themes and geographical locations, and an introduction discussing the major events and developments of the Viking age are also included. -
Þingeyrar Abbey in Northern Iceland: a Benedictine Powerhouse of Cultural Heritage
religions Article Þingeyrar Abbey in Northern Iceland: A Benedictine Powerhouse of Cultural Heritage Gottskálk Jensson Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics, University of Copenhagen, Njalsgade 136, 2300 Copenhagen, Denmark; [email protected] Abstract: Þingeyrar Abbey was founded in 1133 and dissolved in the wake of the Lutheran Reforma- tion (1550), to virtually disappear with time from the face of the earth. Although highly promising archeological excavations are under way, our material points of access to this important monastic foundation are still only a handful of medieval artifacts. However, throughout its medieval existence Þingeyrar Abbey was an inordinately large producer of Latin and Icelandic literature. We have the names of monastic authors, poets, translators, compilators, and scribes, who engaged creatively with such diverse subjects as Christian hagiography, contemporary history, and Norse mythology, skillfully amalgamating all of this into a coherent, imaginative whole. Thus, Þingeyrar Abbey has a prominent place in the creation and preservation of the Icelandic Eddas and Sagas that have shaped the Northern European cultural memory. Despite the dissolution of monastic libraries and wholesale destruction of Icelandic-Latin manuscripts through a mixture of Protestant zealotry and parchment reuse, philologists have been able to trace a number of surviving codices and fragments back to Þingeyrar Abbey. Ultimately, however, our primary points of access to the fascinating world of this remote Benedictine community remain immaterial, a vast corpus of medieval texts edited on the basis of manuscript copies at unknown degrees of separation from the lost originals. Keywords: Latin literature; Icelandic and Old Norse literature; Þingeyrar Abbey; cultural her- Citation: Jensson, Gottskálk.
