Bessie Coleman was a civil aviator. She was the first African American woman and the first Native American to hold a pilot license. was born on January 26, 1892 in Atlanta, Texas. Her father was of descent and her mother was African American. After hearing stories about flying from pilots who served in , she decided she wanted to become a pilot. American flight schools wouldn’t accept women or African Americans, so she traveled to where she took lessons from a French ace pilot. Bessie Coleman became known for performing flying tricks. Her nicknames were “Brave Bessie” and “Queen Bess.” Her goal was to encourage women and African Americans to reach their dreams. Sadly, she died in a plane crash on April 30, 1926 when she was taking a test flight for an airshow in Jacksonville, . Bessie Coleman is honored every year by African American pilots dropping a wreath from the air over her gravesite at Lincoln Cemetery in , Illinois. Today in History On this day in 1909 the NAACP was founded. The NAACP is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It was formed by an interracial group that included prominent African Americans W.E.B. Dubois and Ida B. Wells as well as Mary White Ovington, a white journalist, and Moorfield Storey,a white lawyer.
