Its fundraising events receive regular global media coverage and are attended by the most prominent and influential members of the entertainment, fashion, business, and art communities. amfAR’s ability to fund groundbreaking, cure-focused research is due in large part to the money it raises through its many benefit events. Be it small cocktail receptions, art auctions, or international galas, amfAR events play a critically important role in raising funds to support innovative research programs and build HIV/ AIDS awareness domestically and abroad. 4 5 6 7 amfAR New York Gala This high-visibility annual event kicks off New York Fashion Week and honors leading public gures who have made important contributions to the ght against AIDS. The gala attracts leaders from the worlds of fashion, business, entertainment, and the arts.To date, the amfAR New York Gala has raised more than $15 million for amfAR’s life-saving research. Memorable Moments Honored at the 2015 Gala, amfAR Trustee Harry Belafonte’s acceptance speech was a tour de force that riveted the 800-strong crowd. Whoopi Goldberg made the award presentation. During the 2014 gala, Liam Neeson made a surprise appearance to present amfAR’s Award of courage to Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson. In 2013 amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole was presented with amfAR’s Award of Courage by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. amfAR Ambassador Janet Jackson and long-time amfAR supporter Heidi Klum were also honored. The 2011 Gala featured a moving tribute to amfAR Founding International Chairman Dame Elizabeth Taylor delivered by Sir Elton John. President Bill Clinton and amfAR Founding Chairman Dr. Mathilde Krim were also honored. Another highlight of 2011 was a historic reunion performance of “That’s What Friends Are For” by the original artists: Sir Elton John, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, and Stevie Wonder. In 2010, Lady Gaga electried the crowd with her performance at a Terence Koh-designed piano embellished with crushed pearls and M•A•C cosmetics. Hong Kong-based actress and amfAR Ambassador Michelle Yeoh received special recognition for her exceptional contributions to the global ght against AIDS. Gwyneth Paltrow served as Honorary Chair and Event Co-Chairs included Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, and Naomi Campbell, among others. Leading Hong Kong businesswoman and philanthropist Pansy Ho chaired the event, which raised more than $4 million for amfAR’s lifesaving work. The evening featured an outstanding performance by Robin Thicke and a spirited live auction conducted by legendary auctioneer Simon de Pury. Memorable Moments Longtime amfAR supporter Leonardo DiCaprio donated a surprise auction lot—two seats at his personal table at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Gala in St. Tropez in July, plus an invitation to relax on his yacht the following day. After a lively round of bidding, four different guests offered $250,000 each, for a total of $1 million. A hauntingly beautiful oil painting, titled Friend, by renowned Chinese artist Jia Aili spurred a frenetic round of bidding, which quickly soared to a sale price of $550,000. The evening’s live auction is famous for the impromptu participation of celebrities and one-of-a- kind auction lots. Since amfAR Founding International Chairman Dame Elizabeth Taylor hosted the rst Cinema Against AIDS in 1993, these signature amfAR benets have generated more than $140 million and have played a pivotal role in focusing attention on the ght against AIDS Past events have been chaired by amfAR Global Fundraising Chairman Sharon Stone, President Bill Clinton, Demi Moore, Sir Elton John, and Madonna, among many others. Memorable Moments Rosario Dawson wrapped up the 2014 auction by announcing a surprise item—a promotional poster of Grace Jones’ 1981 album Nightclubbing that was signed by Jones herself backstage shortly before it was auctioned off. amfAR’s Global Fundraising Chairman Sharon Stone led a spirited auction at the 2012 event. Highly coveted, precious and exceedingly rare, diamonds can take on different meanings: a symbol of status, a statement of love or a sign of purity. “Diamonds are a physical connection to [the earth] other than our feet on the ground,” says Russell Shor, a senior industry analyst for the Gemologist Institute of America. “When the earth was young and there was volcanic mass seething inside—this is how diamonds were formed. Diamonds connect us to that.” One man understood this intrinsic connection and dedicated his life to bringing the world closer to the precious gem through his jewelry designs and generous gifts to national institu- tions. Known as the “king of dia- monds,” the late Harry Winston was the first American jeweler to own and cut some of the most iconic stones in history, in addi- tion to setting a new standard for jewelry that showcases a gem’s natural beauty. Born more than a century ago, the young Winston—the son of a small jewelry shop owner—demonstrated a natural instinct for examining diamonds and precious gems. Schiavo and approved by _________________________________ Capstone Director _________________________________ Program Director Camden, New Jersey, December 2014 i Abstract Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) musician, artist songwriter, and founder of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, Nirvana, was dubbed, “the voice of a generation”; a moniker he wore like his faded cardigan sweater, but with more than some distain. Cobain‟s journey to the top of the Billboard charts was much more Dickensian than many of the generations of fans may realize. During his all too short life, Cobain struggled with physical illness, poverty, undiagnosed depression, a broken family, and the crippling isolation and loneliness brought on by drug addiction. Cobain may have shunned the idea of fame and fortune but like many struggling young musicians (who would become his peers) coming up in the blue collar, working class suburbs of Aberdeen and Tacoma Washington State, being on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine wasn‟t a nightmare image. Cobain, with his unkempt blond hair, polarizing blue eyes, and fragile appearance is a modern-punk-rock Jesus; a model example of the modern-day hero. The musician- a reluctant hero at best, but one who took a dark, frightening journey into another realm, to emerge stronger, clearer headed and changing the trajectory of his life.

    Gillian Laub (b.1975, Chappaqua, New York) is a photographer and filmmaker based in New York. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in comparative literature before studying photography at the International Center of Photography, where her love of visual storytelling and family narratives began. Laub’s first monograph, Testimony (Aperture 2007), began as a response to the media coverage during the second Intifada in the Middle East, and a desire to create a dialogue between apparent enemies. This work is comprised of portraits and testimonies from Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, Lebanese, and Palestinians all directly and indirectly affected by the complicated geopolitical context in which they lived. Laub spent over a decade working in Georgia exploring issues of lingering racism in the American South. This work became Laub’s first feature length, directed and produced, documentary film, Southern Rites that premiered on HBO in May 2015. Her monograph, Southern Rites (Damiani, 2015) and travelling exhibition by the same title came out in conjunction with the film and are being used for an educational outreach campaign, in schools and institutions across the country. Southern Rites was named one of the best photo books of 2015 by TIME, Smithsonian, Vogue, LensCulture, and American Photo. It was also nominated for a Lucie award and Humanitas award. "Riveting...In a calm, understated tone, Southern Rites digs deep to expose the roots that have made segregated proms and other affronts possible. Southern Rites is a portrait of the inequities that lead to disaster on the streets of cities like Baltimore and Ferguson, Mo.” - The New York Times Laub has been interviewed on NPR, CNN, MSNBC, Good Morning America, Times Talks and numerous others.

Lampert is chairman and chief executive of- ficer of Sears Holding Corp. and chairman of ESL Investments, which holds a 48.4 percent stake in MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2013 Q $3.00 Q WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY Sears. Last week he faced a blow when Goldman WWD Sachs pulled $3.5 billion out of ESL, cutting the funds ESL has under management by more than 60 percent and, as a result, reducing his stake in Sears to below 50 percent since part of the payout was in Sears stock. On Friday, Lampert had to once again shuffle Sears’ assets in order to bolster the ailing retailer’s balance sheet. The hedge fund manager is spinning off Lands’ End, making that division a public company once again. [For more on the spin-off, see sidebar, page 7]. No word yet on the future of Sears Auto Center busi- ness, which the company has been considering divest- ing to raise further funds to keep Sears operating. Even after the latest spin-off, Lampert will still have 48.4 percent of Lands’ End and there is little doubt he and his investors have profited handsomely Gaucho from the Sears investment.

Orientador: Prof. Dr. Paulo Bernardo Vaz BELO HORIZONTE 2010 Resumo O objetivo desta tese é analisar de que forma a moda, por meio da mídia revista, enforma os corpos e subjetividades femininos. No entanto, discute‐se também um paradoxo instaurado na relação entre os periódicos impressos e fenômeno da moda: o prazer estético gerado por textos verbo‐visuais com pretensões de incitar o consumo. Dessa forma, entende‐se que há um movimento que tenta formatar as possíveis leitoras enquanto mulheres, naquilo que são e aparentam, mas ao mesmo tempo é entregue a elas objetos que primam por levá‐las a mundos de sonho e deixá‐las mergulhar em inúmeras possibilidades que em nada se assemelham à dureza do cotidiano. Para aprofundar nesse paradoxo, foi realizada uma pesquisa que buscou compreender a moda enquanto comunicação, suas relações com a estetização do corpo e do cotidiano e os usos que os sujeitos fazem de sua indumentária. Buscou‐se também compreender as dinâmicas de instauração do jornalismo feminino, do qual o de moda torna‐se sinônimo, para que fosse elucidada a emergência e importância das imagens na tarefa de tornar a moda pública e consolidá‐la tal qual a conhecemos.
