2 3 amfAR Annual Events amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is recognized around the world as one of the leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Its fundraising events receive regular global media coverage and are attended by the most prominent and influential members of the entertainment, fashion, business, and art communities. amfAR’s ability to fund groundbreaking, cure-focused research is due in large part to the money it raises through its many benefit events. Be it small cocktail receptions, art auctions, or international galas, amfAR events play a critically important role in raising funds to support innovative research programs and build HIV/ AIDS awareness domestically and abroad.

4 5 6 7 amfAR New York Gala This high-visibility annual event kicks off New York Fashion Week and honors leading public gures who have made important contributions to the ght against AIDS. The gala attracts leaders from the worlds of fashion, business, entertainment, and the arts.To date, the amfAR New York Gala has raised more than $15 million for amfAR’s life-saving research.

 Honored at the 2015 Gala, amfAR Trustee ’s acceptance speech was a tour de force that riveted the 800-strong crowd. made the award presentation.

 During the 2014 gala, Liam Neeson made a surprise appearance to present amfAR’s Award of courage to and Joely Richardson.  In 2013 amfAR Chairman was presented with amfAR’s Award of Courage by New York Governor . amfAR Ambassador Janet Jackson and long-time amfAR supporter were also honored.

 The 2011 Gala featured a moving tribute to amfAR Founding International Chairman Dame delivered by Sir . President Bill Clinton and amfAR Founding Chairman Dr. Mathilde Krim were also honored.

 Another highlight of 2011 was a historic reunion performance of “That’s What Friends Are For” by the original artists: Sir Elton John, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, and Stevie Wonder.

 In 2010, Lady Gaga electri ed the crowd with her performance at a Terence Koh-designed piano embellished with crushed pearls and M•A•C cosmetics.

8 9 10 11 amfAR Hong Kong amfAR’s inaugural Hong Kong gala, held in March 2015, was a resounding success. Hong Kong-based actress and amfAR Ambassador Michelle Yeoh received special recognition for her exceptional contributions to the global ght against AIDS. Gwyneth Paltrow served as Honorary Chair and Event Co-Chairs included Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss, and , among others. Leading Hong Kong businesswoman and philanthropist Pansy Ho chaired the event, which raised more than $4 million for amfAR’s lifesaving work.

The evening featured an outstanding performance by Robin Thicke and a spirited live auction conducted by legendary auctioneer Simon de Pury.

Memorable Moments

 Longtime amfAR supporter Leonardo DiCaprio donated a surprise auction lot—two seats at his personal table at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Gala in St. Tropez in July, plus an invitation to relax on his yacht the following day. After a lively round of bidding, four different guests offered $250,000 each, for a total of $1 million.

 A hauntingly beautiful oil painting, titled Friend, by renowned Chinese artist Jia Aili spurred a frenetic round of bidding, which quickly soared to a sale price of $550,000.

 Robin Thicke rounded out the evening, getting on their feet with his chart-topping hits “Blurred Lines,” “Give It To You,” and “Magic,” and a rendition of ’s “Rock With You.”

12 13 14 15 Cinema Against AIDS Over the years, Cinema Against AIDS has become one of the most celebrated and consistently successful charitable events in the world and the most eagerly anticipated event held during the Cannes International Film Festival. The evening’s live auction is famous for the impromptu participation of celebrities and one-of-a- kind auction lots. Since amfAR Founding International Chairman Dame Elizabeth Taylor hosted the rst Cinema Against AIDS in 1993, these signature amfAR bene ts have generated more than $140 million and have played a pivotal role in focusing attention on the ght against AIDS Past events have been chaired by amfAR Global Fundraising Chairman , President Bill Clinton, Demi Moore, Sir Elton John, and , among many others. Guests include many of the celebrities and personalities associated with the lm festival.

Memorable Moments

 A stunning gilded woolly mammoth skeleton by Damien Hirst fetched a record $15 million in the 2014 live auction.

 A 2013 highlight was a dazzling “Ultimate Gold Collection Fashion Show” curated by Carine Roitfeld.

 In 2008 Madonna auctioned off a one-of-a- kind alligator bag personally designed by , spicing it up with items from her own purse.

16 17 18 19 amfAR Milano The Italian fashion community has long been exemplary in its support of amfAR, with its fashion houses and designers underwriting and leading many of the Foundation’s most successful fundraising efforts. Since the rst amfAR Milano in 2009, the annual black-tie event, held during Fashion Week, has raised more than $7 million. Memorable Moments  wrapped up the 2014 auction by announcing a surprise item—a promotional poster of ’ 1981 album Nightclubbing that was signed by Jones herself backstage shortly before it was auctioned off.

 amfAR’s Global Fundraising Chairman Sharon Stone led a spirited auction at the 2012 event.  In a 2011 highlight, Raphael Saadiq invited Grammy Award-winning artist to join him on stage to perform the song “My Cherie Amour.”  President Bill Clinton’s Yamaha alto saxaphone fetched 100,000 Euros in the 2010 live auction. 20 21 22 23 TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art This spectacular gala dinner and art auction jointly benefits amfAR and the Museum of Art (DMA). Hosted every year by Cindy and Howard Rachofsky at their Richard Meier-designed home, The Rachofsky House, TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art draws prominent artists, art collectors, and philanthropists from around the world. Initially held on a single evening, TWO x TWO’s enormous success has caused it to evolve into a weeklong series of events. Typically selling out months in advance, the gala features a seated dinner for 500 guests and both live and silent auctions of major works of contemporary art and unique luxury items. Thanks to the phenomenal support of the art community, TWO x TWO has raised more than $52 million in support of amfAR’s AIDS research initiatives and the DMA’s contemporary art acquisition program. It has become amfAR’s largest fundraiser in the and 2015 will mark its 17th year.

24 25 26 27 The Inspiration Series amfAR and Josh Wood Productions launched the Inspiration Series in 2010 to celebrate fashion and style while raising funds for the Foundation’s lifesaving AIDS research programs. Each year features a different design “Inspiration” theme. Since its inception, Inspiration galas have been held in New York, Los Angeles, , São Paulo, , Toronto, and Miami. Participants and honorees have included Ricky Martin, amfAR Global Fundraising Chairman Sharon Stone, Sandra Bullock, , Heidi Klum, , Francisco Costa, Fergie, Claire Danes, , Sofia Coppola, and International. 28 29 Inspiration São Paulo Inspiration Gala São Paulo is amfAR’s signature South American event, and it is regularly attended by fashion, arts, and business luminaries from both and the U.S. Past speakers and presenters have included Naomi Campbell, Claire Danes, Josh Duhamel, Deborah Harry, Kate Moss, and amfAR Global Fundraising Chairman Sharon Stone.

Memorable Moments

 The 2014 gala featured a heartfelt tribute to Nizan Guanaes, one of Brazil’s leading communications entrepreneurs, and Donata Meirelles, style director of Vogue Brasil, and culminated in a high-octane performance by nine-time Grammy Award-winning superstar, Mary J. Blige.

 In 2013, soccer legend Pelé was presented with the Humanitarian Award and pop star Fergie received the Award of Inspiration.

 The evening’s performers included Gilberto Gil, one of Brazil’s most inuential and celebrated musicians, and acclaimed samba artist Seu Jorge.

 In a highlight of the 2012 auction, amfAR Global Fundraising Chairman Sharon Stone put Debbie Harry on the auction block, and guests pledged a collective $100,000 for the chance to hear the beloved Blondie singer perform. Ms. Harry treated the crowd to an impromptu a capella version of her hit “Heart of Glass.”  Jennifer Hudson gave a rousing performance at the 2011 event, and Brazilian singer and actress Preta Gil closed the night with an appearance that had guests dancing late into the night.

34 35 36 37 Inspiration Los Angeles The Inspiration Gala Los Angeles draws some of the biggest names in entertainment. The past Los Angeles events have been hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow, Kylie Minogue, Andy Cohen, and Chelsea Handler.

Memorable Moments  Rihanna presented with the 2014 Award of Inspiration, praising his “creative genius, leadership, integrity, and generosity.”  The 2014 event was bookended with surprise performances by Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland of Coldplay and the legendary Diana Ross.  Katy Perry closed out the 2012 event with a stunning acoustic set of her most beloved hits. One lucky guest also walked away with the ultimate souvenir during the live auction when Perry donated an autographed guitar. She also offered to take the winner and his or her friends out for a night at the Abbey as part of the auction package, which sold for $32,000. In the fall of 2011, a small group of young professionals from the fields of finance, art, media, fashion, and entertainment came together to form generationCURE. generationCURE founder and amfAR Trustee T. Ryan Greenawalt recruited the committee of young people dedicated to helping amfAR accelerate its search for a cure for AIDS.

“We don’t want to just be the next generation of champions for a cure for HIV/AIDS—we want to be the last one, because we believe a cure is coming in our ,” says generationCURE National Chair John Cafarelli.

In order to reach their target demographic of socially aware individuals between the ages of 25 and 40, generationCURE set three specific goals: raise $150,000 to fund a new cure-focused research project, expand amfAR’s social networks and harness the power of social media, and increase HIV awareness by fighting complacency and ignorance among young people.

To that end, generationCURE has hosted a number of events in , Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. For the past three years, generationCURE has celebrated the coming of summer with rooftop Solstice parties and kicked off the 2014 holiday season at the New York City hotspot Top of The Standard rooftop lounge. generationCURE has exceeded its goal of raising $150,000 for amfAR and remains dedicated to its mission: to cultivate the next, and last, generation of amfAR champions for a cure.

54 55 amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is dedicated to ending the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research. Since its founding in 1985, amfAR has accelerated the pace of HIV/AIDS research and contributed to numerous breakthroughs that are extending and saving lives around the world. amfAR identi es critical gaps in our knowledge of HIV/AIDS and supports promising early-stage studies that often lack the preliminary data required by more traditional funders. Through its Research program, amfAR is advancing efforts to prevent HIV infection in those who are vulnerable and to improve treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS, with the ultimate goal of eradicating the virus. amfAR’s TREAT Asia program is a network of clinics, hospitals, and research institutions working with civil society to ensure the safe and effective delivery of HIV/AIDS treatments throughout Asia and the Paci c. TREAT Asia has become a for regional collaboration on treatment preparedness, education, training, and clinical research.

The GMT Initiative strives to reduce worldwide rates of HIV infection among men, other men who have sex with men (MSM), and individuals (collectively GMT) in developing countries by providing grants that help expand HIV treatment access, education, and prevention. The GMT Initiative also works to build understanding and awareness of HIV epidemics among GMT, and advocates for effective policies and increased funding. Informed by thorough research and analysis, amfAR is a highly respected advocate of rational and compassionate AIDS-related public policy. The Foundation’s Public Policy program is engaged in efforts to increase investments in HIV/AIDS research; ensure a robust response to the global epidemic; expand access to prevention, treatment, and care; and protect the civil rights of all people affected by HIV/AIDS.

Through its Public Information program, amfAR generates awareness of for better treatment and prevention methods, and publishes educational materials on important AIDS-related research, treatment, prevention, and policy issues.
