Radića 13, Hrvatska ISBN 978-963-642-473-2 978-953-6072-68-2 Za nakladnika Doc. dr. sc. Gyula Berke i Prof. dr. sc. Igor Bojanić Grafi čka priprema: Krešimir Rezo Nakladnik: Gradska tiskara Osijek d.d. Predgovor Zbornik radova pred nama, “Suvremeni pravni izazovi: EU - Mađarska – Hrvatska”, rezultat je uspješne i plodonosne suradnje Pravnog fakulteta u Osijeku i Pravnog fakulteta u Pečuhu u okviru projekta SUNICOP (Str- engthening University Cooperation Osijek – Pécs). Stoga i buduća individualna i zajednička intelektualna putovanja mađarskih i hrvatskih znanstvenika u polju prava, među ostalim, valja usmjeriti u tom pravcu. • 1 the New Monasticon Hibernicum and Inquiry Into
THE NEW MONASTICON HIBERNICUM AND INQUIRY INTO THE EARLY CHRISTIAN AND MEDIEVAL CHURCH IN IRELAND Launched in October 2003 under the auspices of the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the ‘Monasticon Hibernicum’ project is based in the Department of Old and Middle Irish at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Co. Kildare. Central to the project is a database of the native Early Christian and Medieval (5th to 12th centuries AD) ecclesiastical foundations of Ireland - managed by research fellows Ailbhe MacShamhráin and Aidan Breen, under the general direction of Kim McCone, professor of Old and Middle Irish. A longer-term goal is to produce a dictionary of the Early Christian churches, cathedrals, monasteries, convents and hermitages of Ireland for which historical, archaeological or placename evidence survives. The title of the project pays tribute to Mervyn Archdall’s Monasticon Hibernicum; but what is envisaged here goes beyond revision of such antiquarian classics.1 The comprehensive character of this new Monasticon (the database already features a number of sites which are indicated solely by historical, or by archaeological, or placename evidence), along with its structure and referencing, will make for more than a general reference book. It is envisaged as a research-tool to further inquiry in the fields of history (helping to illuminate, for example, ecclesiastico-political relationships, pre-reform church organisation, the dissemination of saints’ cults and gender-politics in the Irish church) and settlement studies - as illustrated below with reference to some of the Leinster data. The first phase of the project, carried out during the academic year 2003-04, has focused on the ecclesiastical province of Dublin – which includes the dioceses of Dublin itself, Glendalough, Ferns, Kildare, Leighlin and Ossory.

Dissertation Advisors: James Hankins, Tamar Herzog Stuart Michael McManus The Global Lettered City: Humanism and Empire in Colonial Latin America and the Early Modern World Abstract Historians have long recognized the symbiotic relationship between learned culture, urban life and Iberian expansion in the creation of “Latin” America out of the ruins of pre-Columbian polities, a process described most famously by Ángel Rama in his account of the “lettered city” (ciudad letrada). This dissertation argues that this was part of a larger global process in Latin America, Iberian Asia, Spanish North Africa, British North America and Europe.

  • No Man Is an Ireland”
1 “NO MAN IS AN IRELAND” “I know histhry isn’t thrue, Hinnissy, because it ain’t like what I see ivry day in Halsted Street. If any wan comes along with a histhry iv Greece or Rome that’ll show me th’ people fightin’, gettin’ dhrunk, makin’ love, gettin’ married, owin’ th’ grocery man an’ bein’ without hard coal, I’ll believe they was a Greece or Rome, but not befur.” — Dunne, Finley Peter, OBSERVATIONS BY MR. DOOLEY, New York, 1902 Karl Marx would express, in his THE CIVIL WAR IN FRANCE, 1848-1850, the sentiment that “The origin of states gets lost in a myth, in which one may believe, but which one may not discuss.” On the 1st page of Theodore W. Allen’s introduction to his 1st volume,2 this independent scholar asks our “indulgence for only one assumption, namely, that while some people may desire to be masters, all persons are born equally unwilling and unsuited to be slaves.” I find that remark remarkable indeed! When in our Declaration of Independence we said to ourselves “All men are created equal,” we were of course writing as lawyers and in a lawyerly manner. We were purposing to level others, such as those overweening overbred British aristocrats, down to our own lay level, but meanwhile it was no part of our purpose to level others, such as our wives and slaves, up to our own exalted situation —we were doing this to benefit ourselves at the expense of others, and not doing this for the benefit of others.

John Boyle O'Reilly. PREFACE We had at first intended that this should be a book without a preface, and indeed it needs none, for it speaks in no uncer- tain tones for itself; but on reconsideration we decided that it would be more seemly to give a short explanation of our aim, our motives, and our methods. As a result of innumerable inquiries which have come to us during our experience as educators, we have been forced to the conclusion that the performances of the Irish race in many fields of endeavor are entirely unknown to most people, and that even to the elect they are not nearly so well known as they deserve to be. Hence there came to us the thought of placing on record, in an accessible, comprehensive, and permanent form, an outline of the whole range of Irish achievement dur- ing the last two thousand years.

EXPLORATORY STUDY ON THE IBERIAN UNION IN SECONDARY TEXTBOOKS OF PORTUGAL AND SPAIN: STUDENTS' IDEAS ABOUT THIS HISTORICAL PROCESS FROM THEIR USE Glória Solé (CIEd, University of Minho, Portugal) [email protected] Cosme Gómez (DICSO, University of Múrcia, Spain) [email protected] INTRODUCTION This exploratory study is part of Research project EDU2015-65621-C3-2-R "The evaluation of competences and the development of cognitive abilities on history in Compulsory Secondary Education“. • Comparative analysis of curriculum, History textbooks, historical learning. • Perception on the evaluation of historical competences by students. • Analysis of historical narratives. 2 INTRODUCTION This issue (Iberian Union) is common to both countries (Portugal and Spain). Iberian Union is the historical period that goes from 1580 to 1640 in which Portugal was governed by the kings of Spain (Philip I, Philip II and Philip II- a king for two countries), giving rise to the Philippine dynasty in Portugal. Mains goals: Understand how this historical process is covered in textbooks in Portugal and Spain, and how these influence the historical ideas of Portuguese and Spanish students. As the students think the possibility of not having been given the Restoration of Independence (separation of the two crowns in 1640, Spain and Portugal) as would be the History of Portugal and Spain today (counterfactual). 3 Theorycal Background Usually textbooks play a transmitting function of knowledge and sense of hegemonic reality by the authorities or power. Foster (2011) suggests it is a powerful cultural artifact that contains ideas and values that influential sectors society expect that students learn. Is key to analyze the construction of that narrative in the approache proposed by Chartier (2007), but remembering authors as Apple & Christian-Smith, 1991; Paxton, 1999; or Porat, 2004.
