Appendix A Not an Introduction to Theory

In this short appendix we collect some basic information about . Of course, this can not be a profound introduction to set theory at all. Instead, we assume that the reader has some familiarity with set theory as this can be acquired from basic courses in . Such a will ultimately yield serious difficulties as this was the case also historically. The right answer to these problems is to pass to axiomatic set theory, which, however, would lead us much too far. Thus, this appendix should be more viewed as a cheat sheet in set theory rather than a systematic introduction. As a consequence, we only present some results without further proofs. Here the proofs are either simple and can be viewed as exercises, or they would require the full machinery of axiomatic set theory in order to be proven rigorously. An enjoyable further reading is e.g. [9].

A.1 Unions, Intersections, and Complements

In topology one needs to understand the behaviour of the set arithmetic operations, like unions and intersections, under taking images and preimages with respect to maps between the sets in question. We will collect now some basic features of set arithmetic. In naive set theory, a set is a collection of “things”, its elements, and two sets are equal if they have the same elements. If a “thing” x is an of a set M we write this as x ∈ M, otherwise we write x ∈ M.IfM is a set, we can consider of it: a certain collection of elements of M constitutes a N of M, written as N ⊆ M. Often we determine subsets by taking those elements of M satisfying a certain property p. In this case we write N ={x ∈ M | p(x) is true} for the subset of all those elements in M for which the statement p(x) holds. In every set M there is a particular subset, the , denoted by ∅, which has no elements at all. The collection of all subsets of a given set M forms again a set, called the of M, which we denote by 2M .

It should be clear that up to now this can hardly be a serious mathematical definition as we have not said what a “collection” should be or what “things” are. However, from our current, naive point of view the ideas should become clear. For a given non-empty set I we can consider other sets Mi for every i ∈ I .In this case we say that we have a collection {Mi }i∈I of sets indexed by an I . For any such collection of sets there is another set M, called the of all the Mi , which contains the sets Mi as subsets but no other elements than those in the = = ∪···∪ Mi . If we have a collection {Mi }i∈I of sets indexed by some index set I we can form its intersection, i.e. all those elements which are in Mi for all i ∈ I . The last important construction is the Cartesian M of a collection of sets {Mi }i∈I . The construction of finite Cartesian products requires ordered pairs and then ordered n-tupels, for infinite Cartesian products the construction is slightly more involved. The idea is however rather simple, an element x of the Cartesian product M is a large column (xi )i∈I indexed by I such that at the i-th position we ∈ = have an element xi Mi . We write M i∈I Mi for the Cartesian product and M = M1 ×···×Mn for finitely many M1,...,Mn.

A.2 Maps, Images, and Preimages

Given two sets M and N a map from M to N is an assignment where every element x ∈ M is assigned an element f (x) ∈ N. In this case we write f : M  x → f (x) ∈ N for the map f and call f (x) the of x under the map f . A particular map is the identity map on M which maps every element x ∈ M to x itself. We denote the identity map on M by idM : M −→ M. For a subset A ⊆ M one defines the image set

Amap f : M −→ N is called injective, if every element y ∈ N has at most one preimage in M. The map is called surjective if every element y ∈ N is an image, i.e. has a preimage in M. Equivalently, this means f (M) = N. Finally, f is called bijective if f is both injective and surjective. Being bijective is equivalent to having −1 −1 an inverse map, i.e. a map denoted by f : N −→ M with f ◦ f = idN and −1 f ◦ f = idM . A.3 Zorn’s Lemma

In this last section we present a formulation of the of Choice in set theory in the incarnation of Zorn’s Lemma. Since we have not discussed the other of set theory properly, there is no point in proving that Zorn’s Lemma is equivalent to the under the assumption of the remaining axioms. We refer to [11] for a detailed discussion. The Axiom of Choice states that for an arbitrary collection of non-empty sets { } Mi i∈I also their Cartesian product i∈I Mi is non-empty. The name originates from the idea that the elements of the Cartesian product x = (xi )i∈I can be viewed as choice functions, i.e. for every index i ∈ I the element x “chooses” the element xi ∈ Mi . Though seemingly obvious, the subtle point with this axiom of set theory is that we have to be able to choose elements for all i from a priori completely structureless sets Mi . As soon as the sets Mi are more specific, this might be possible without invoking the Axiom of Choice. The formulation of the Axiom of Choice we need most in this work is Zorn’s Lemma. Here one considers a M with partial order . A subset N ⊆ M is called linearly (or totally) ordered with respect to  if any two elements x, y ∈ N are comparable with respect to , i.e. either x  y or y  x. A linearly ordered subset is also called a chain. A subset N has an upper bound x ∈ M if for all y ∈ N we have y  x. An element x∞ ∈ M is called maximal if for all x ∈ M with x∞  x one has x∞ = x. With these notions, Zorn’s Lemma can be formulated as follows:

Lemma A.3.1 (Zorn) Let (M, ) be a partially ordered set such that every linearly ordered subset N has an upper bound in M. Then M has a maximal element with respect to .

The validity of Zorn’s Lemma for all partially ordered sets is then equivalent to the Axiom of Choice. Note that the maximal element can in general not be obtained in any algorithmic way. It will also not be unique in general. Zorn’s Lemma gives only the existence, nothing more and nothing less. References
