There is not enough space or words to thank everyone but below are a few key people who played a major role. We apologize for anyone who may have been overlooked - as it was not intentional. This project is the product of the parent engagement initiative of the Kellogg-funded Bronx Institute ENLACE (Engaging Latino Communities in Education) project. We want to offer special thanks to Miguel Satut, Program Director of ENLACE at the Kellogg Foundation. We also thank Allen Gomez, Vice President and Corporate Giving Manager, Northeast Division of Washington Mutual for additional support. Shared Campus Shared Campus T HE N EW Y ORK C ITY D EPARTMENT OF E DUCATION JOEL I. KLEIN, Chancellor OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR 52 Chambers Street – New York, NY 10007 November 2005 Dear Colleagues: Like the rest of the United States, one of New York City’s greatest school reform challenges is at the secondary-school level. To increase the number of quality educational options for students and their families, the Department of Education has opened 149 new small secondary schools over the last three years, including schools opened in partnership with New Visions through the New Century Initiative. The common features of the new small schools are academic rigor, personalized learning environments, and partnership with non-profit organizations, cultural institutions, and businesses that bring additional resources to enhance learning. Attendance and promotion rates in these schools are already demonstrating encouraging improvement, and we look forward to the new schools’ graduating their first classes over the next few years.
