Drummer-composer John Hollenbeck acrobatically explores the dichotomy between brevity and complexity on Super Petite, the eighth release by the critically acclaimed, proudly eccentric Claudia Quintet. The oxymoronic title of the band’s newest album on Cuneiform Records captures the essence of its ten new compositions, which pack all of the wit and virtuosity that listeners have come to expect from the Claudia Quintet into the time frame of radio-friendly pop songs. As always, Hollenbeck’s uncategorizable music – which bridges the worlds of modern jazz and new music in surprising and inventive ways - is realized by Claudia’s longstanding line-up: clarinetist/tenor saxophonist Chris Speed, vibraphonist Matt Moran, bassist Drew Gress, and accordionist Red Wierenga. Over the course of 19 years and 8 albums, the band has forged an astounding chemistry and become expert at juggling mind-boggling dexterity with inviting emotion and spirit. Like the band’s name, the title Super Petite originated as an affectionate nickname for one of the band’s fans.

He’ll take some time to bring his all-star quartet to UMass Amherst, performing at Bowker Auditorium on Thursday, November 19 th at 7:30 p.m. The New Yorker calls Akinmusire “a thrilling trumpeter and astute bandleader [with a] unique spark in his playing.” He is fast moving to the front ranks of progressive jazzmen, earning both the Doris Duke Impact Award and the Doris Duke Artist Award in the past two years. Appearing as part of the FAC’s Billy Taylor Jazz Residency, Akinmusire will also be an artist in residence in the area for the week of his performance. This will include teaching masterclasses at local high schools and colleges. In addition, Akinmusire will sit in with the Northampton Jazz Workshop as a special guest artist on Tuesday, November 17 at City Sports Grille (525 Main Street, Northampton).

Indeed, from a position of relative obscurity when he arrived in New York in 1959, he went on to become one of contemporary jazz’s most prolific and commercially successful composers.     October 8, 2015 Young Lords exhibit, Christian Scott at Harlem Stage By Ron Scott Christian Scott EMILIE PONS PHOTO The 1960s were heavily colored with shaded overtones of rebellious youth implementing revolutionary tactics against an indifferent government that always seemed to have a smirk of supremacy. In an effort to bring civil and human rights to the forefront of this revolution, the Young Lords, with founder Jose Cha Cha Jimenez, reorganized to become the Young Lords Party in the fall of 1960. Their sense of urgency at the time was Chicago Mayor Richard Daley’s urban renewal plan, which was displacing Puerto Ricans from prime real estate areas such as Lakeview and Lincoln Park. The Young Lords became a militant social activist organization defining Puerto Rican self- determination in the community. Multiple chapters began forming nationwide in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. In July 1969, the national headquarters in Chicago sanctioned New York City, where nearly 80 percent of the U.S. Puerto Rican population lived, as the regional chapter. This chapter was formed by Mickey Melendez with Felipe Luciano, chairman; David Perez, minister of defense; Juan Gonzalez, minister of education; Pablo Guzman, minister of information; Juan Fi Ortiz, minister of finance; and Denise Oliver, minister of economic development. “¡Presente! The Young Lords in New York” is now on exhibit at Loisaida through Oct. 10 at 710 E. Ninth St. and Avenue C, the Bronx Museum of the Arts through Oct. 18 at 1040 Grand Concourse and El Museo del Barrio through Oct. 17 at 1230 Fifth Ave.
