  • Victory and Sorrow: the Music & Life of Booker Little
ii VICTORY AND SORROW: THE MUSIC & LIFE OF BOOKER LITTLE by DYLAN LAGAMMA A Dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-Newark Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Graduate Program in Jazz History & Research written under the direction of Henry Martin and approved by _________________________ _________________________ Newark, New Jersey October 2017 i ©2017 Dylan LaGamma ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION VICTORY AND SORROW: THE MUSICAL LIFE OF BOOKER LITTLE BY DYLAN LAGAMMA Dissertation Director: Henry Martin Booker Little, a masterful trumpeter and composer, passed away in 1961 at the age of twenty-three. Little's untimely death, and still yet extensive recording career,1 presents yet another example of early passing among innovative and influential trumpeters. Like Clifford Brown before him, Theodore “Fats” Navarro before him, Little's death left a gap the in jazz world as both a sophisticated technician and an inspiring composer. However, unlike his predecessors Little is hardly – if ever – mentioned in jazz texts and classrooms. His influence is all but non-existent except to those who have researched his work. More than likely he is the victim of too early a death: Brown passed away at twenty-five and Navarro, twenty-six. Bob Cranshaw, who is present on Little's first recording,2 remarks, “Nobody got a chance to really experience [him]...very few remember him because nobody got a chance to really hear him or see him.”3 Given this, and his later work with more avant-garde and dissonant harmonic/melodic structure as a writing partner with Eric Dolphy, it is no wonder that his remembered career has followed more the path of James P.

Lakecia Benjamin’s journey into music began in the predominantly Dominican Lakecia Benjamin neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City. She grew up listening to and eventually playing Merengue and Bachata. At just 14 years old, she Rise Up gained her independence and moved out of her parents care, earning the little Release Date: March 23, 2018 money she could from local gigs to support herself. Genre: Jazz, R&B Format: CD, Digital Even though she was zoned for George Washington High School, Lakecia was encouraged her to pursue music at La Guardia High School, a popular school for young artists, such as Marcus Miller and Nicki Minaj. At her audition for LaGuar- dia, Bob Stewart, the music director for the school, advised her that she was playing all the right notes but not in the right style. Having only Dominican inuences in her repertoire, Lakecia was unaware of the Jazz greats, but stated bluntly, “I don’t know anything about Jazz Sir; all I know is you have to let me in to this school.” Stewart could see the talent in Benjamin, and so he sent her home with a few names – Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and John Coltrane. She listened and quickly learned their style. Lakecia was nally accepted to attend LaGuardia High School. With her talent, drive, and just a saxophone as her passport, Lakecia was set on her journey from the streets of Washington Heights to the expansive world of Jazz. As she shared her music to wider audiences, Lakecia Benjamin quickly gained recognition.

  • Jason Adasiewicz's Rolldown Varmint Cuneiform 2009
WHAT THE PRESS HAS SAID ABOUT: JASON ADASIEWICZ’S ROLLDOWN VARMINT CUNEIFORM 2009 Line-up: Jason Adasiewicz (vibraphone), Josh Berman (cornet), Aram Shelton (alto saxophone & clarinet), Jason Roebke (bass), Frank Rosaly (drums) “Consult the jazz vibraphone flow chart and it’s easy to connect the dots between major players from Lionel Hampton to Milt Jackson up through Bobby Hutcherson. … Chicago-based Jason Adasiewicz is a relatively new addition to the playing field…the caliber of his work so far certainly places him in a position for early consideration. Varmint continues the course set by his working ensemble Rolldown on their self-titled debut… Apt comparisons to Sixties Blue Note-era Hutcherson have been plentiful in press in describing both Adasiewicz’s sound and his spacious composing style which embraces freer interplay without abandoning an underlying allegiance to head-solos orthodoxy for too long. A closer cousin still might be …Walt Dickerson. Adasiewicz generates a similarly warm and luminous sonority with his mallets and makes regular use of his instrument’s motor to blur his clusters into vivid watercolor shades. The rest of the group is comparably equipped on the creative front with cornetist Josh Berman and alto saxophonist Aram Shelton … obvious antecedents for Shelton are Eric Dolphy and Jackie McLean… Berman has a full range of tonal effects… Bassist Jason Roebke and drummer Frank Rosaly work in keen collusion…The balance is particularly effective … … Chicago residents and visitors are fortunate… Adasiewicz and his colleagues sit well with the city’s fastest company and still have plenty to say.” - Derek Taylor, Dusted, December 2, 2009, www.dustedmagazine.com “Vibraphonist-composer Jason Adasiewicz returns to the same avant-leaning territory he staked out on Rolldown’s eponymous debut in 2008.

  • Peter Johnston 2011
The London School Of Improvised Economics - Peter Johnston 2011 This excerpt from my dissertation was included in the reader for the course MUS 211: Music Cultures of the City at Ryerson University. Introduction The following reading is a reduction of a chapter from my dissertation, which is titled Fields of Production and Streams of Conscious: Negotiating the Musical and Social Practices of Improvised Music in London, England. The object of my research for this work was a group of musicians living in London who self-identified as improvisers, and who are part of a distinct music scene that emerged in the mid-1960s based on the idea of free improvisation. Most of this research was conducted between Sept 2006 and June 2007, during which time I lived in London and conducted interviews with both older individuals who were involved in the creation of this scene, and with younger improvisers who are building on the formative work of the previous generation. This chapter addresses the practical aspects of how improvised music is produced in London, and follows a more theoretical analysis in the previous chapters of why the music sounds like it does. Before moving on to the main content, it will be helpful to give a brief explanation of two of the key terms that occur throughout this chapter: “free improvisation” and the “improvised music field.” “Free improvisation” refers to the creation of musical performances without any pre- determined materials, such as form, tonality, melody, or rhythmic feel. This practice emerged out of developments in jazz in the late 1950s and early 1960s, particularly in the work of Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor, who began performing music without using the song-forms, harmonic progressions, and steady rhythms that characterized jazz until that time.

Today, they present new single, “You Make Me Feel Brand New,” a cover of The Stylistics’ classic, written by Thom Bell and Linda Creed. It follows previous singles, the pair’s “warm and inviting” (Stereogum) cover of Pharoah Sanders & Leon Thomas’ “The Creator Has A Master Plan,” and “Sing,” which was originally written by Joe Raposo for Sesame Street. Douglas & Younger’s rendition of “You Make Me Feel Brand New” opens with light, magnetic flutters from Younger’s harp and strolling plucks on Douglas’ bass.
