4 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2012 / 2013 33 “I would like to thank the players who have left the club this year and thank them for all of their effort”

£Good 1.00 afternoon and welcome to our first home league match of season 2012 / 13.

After a few pre-season games against Dumbarton and Kirriemuir we started our sectional league cup campaign with a couple of good wins against Perthshire and Ashfield, however a disappointing end to the section fol- lowed these two results by failing to beat Maryhill and Yoker, this resulted in us not qualifying for the quarter finals.

The backroom staff and players are as disappointed with these results as the fans are especially as we did so well against the perceived strongest teams in the group.

We started our league campaign last week with a good win away to Beith, everyone was delighted with this in light of the bad start that we had last season, so it’s to be hoped that we can push on and continue this good form.

I would like to thank the players who have left the club this year and thank them for all of their effort and dedication to helping us end up where we did in the league last year, namely Darian who has moved on to senior football with Hamilton Accies also Stevie Dymock and Adam Strachan, good wishes to them all in their new clubs. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new players and hope that they all enjoy their time with Clydebank FC.

As you may or may not be aware of the new initiative to raise funds for the club was started in the close sea- son called the 100 Club, I myself and all of the board members have joined and I would urge you all if you can afford to do it and contribute to the clubs future.

Enjoy todays game and let’s look forward to another good season - “Onwards And Upwards”

Clydebank FC

Running a semi-professional team can be an expensive business - especially one in the top league of the Juniors. Some teams have input from monied investors, a social club or are perhaps resourced from the sale of assets. Clydebank FC don't have access to any of these income sources ... but we do have the backing of a loyal support - the 12th man.

The Bankies have recently launched a scheme to allow fans to commit a regular sum towards maintaining the club's budget and to help to build on our successful 1st season in the Super Premier - where we punched above our weight. The scheme is called the 100 Club - and that's what we're looking for people to commit to - a minimum of £100 per season. That's £8.33 a month or around £1.92 a week.

If you feel you can sign up to this - or have friends or family that wish to support the club ( or perhaps in memory of a loved one ) - then here's how to do it.

Set up a standing order at the bank ( preferred method ) - Sort Code : 30-25-83 Acc No : 00472482 Acc Name : UCS FOOTBALL TRUST Ref : 100 - < put your name in here >

Pay cash or a cheque made payable to CLYDEBANK FC - send to 3 McLaren Crescent, Glasgow G20 0LD or see Club Director Bill Abraham at a game

If you are setting up a standing order or sending a cheque then please let us know that you're doing so - by mailing [email protected]. This is also the address if you want more detail.

In return for your input you will receive an exclusive enamel badge and be put into a draw for a matchworn jersey at the end of the season. You will also be listed on this page in the matchday programme - unless you'd prefer not to be.

The money will be put to good use and will help us to compete at the highest level.

Vinny Berry 1 1 26 26 4 The two top ranked sides from the Central leagues, based on last season’s final league positions, meet today on league business in this Premier Division encounter. Petershill had a magnificent season last term finishing second in the top flight with Bankies two places and four points Paul Bell 4 1 5 25 1 26 behind. With both sides having such good season’s last year the expectation of both sets of supporters have been raised a little and the three Chris Wilson 4 2 1 5 2 19 1 19 6 points on offer today will be eagerly battled for. Last season’s encounters ended all square with one win apiece. Peterhill’s victory came here at Ian Gold 2 1 1 1 3 1 1 11 9 20 2 Holm Park in the corresponding fixture last term which co-incidentally was also the second league game of the season. Graeme Smith 11 11 3 Petershill came through group three of the sectional league cup topping the section ahead of rivals Bellshill Athletic, Shettleston, St Roch’s and Ally Graham 4 1 1 4 1 1 4 1 5 1 Thorniewood United. As the top rated side in that group with three district sides and only one from the top two divisions making up the opposition it was expected that once again they would qualify for the quarter finals. Although they won all four fixtures they only won by the odd goal in Joe Andrew 2 2 1 3 2 3 2 5

each. The first challenge they had was a home match against St Roch’s which Peasy won 2-1. A visit to Thorniewood ended in the same score Trialist MM 2 2 2 2 but a trip to Shettleston only witnessed one goal. Petershill wrapped up the section with another 1-0 win this time at home to Bellshill. This set Trialist AR 1 1 1 1 them up with a quarter final trip to Group 4 winners Rutherglen Glencairn with the result unknown at the time of the programme going to print. Allan MacPherson 1 1 1 1 Last weekend Peasy kicked off their league campaign with a home fixture against Rob Roy, a team who had strengthened their squad after finishing a distant eighth in the table last season. Just like last season though Petershill began with a win after triumphing 1-0 over the Rabs. Craig McPherson

Peasy had a great season last term and were never out of the top five the entire season. After one game they find themselves in the top five Scott Walker after the opening round of fixtures and will be determined to stay in the top five all season again this time. Bankies will be looking to avenge their 1-0 loss in the corresponding fixture last season so today has all the hallmarks of a very interesting encounter between these two sides and is arguably the match of the day in the Premier Division.

Central League Cup Semi-Final action from 2010

when Bankies beat Petershill 3-2 to reach the final. This is the sixth meeting between these two sides with Clydebank head- ing the series with three wins to Petershill’s one, the other ending all square. That drawn game was the first meeting of the sides when they clashed in an Evening Times Cup fixture at Glenhead Park. Although Petershill won the resulting penalty shoot-out it was Clydebank who progressed because Peasy had fielded an ineligible player and were eliminated. The second meeting of the sides was that epic quarter final tie where Bankies won 2-1 on their way to the final in 2009. The third encounter was another memorable occasion for Clydebank fans as their side won 3-2 in the semi-final of the Central League Cup on their way to winning that trophy in 2010. Last season the sides met twice with honours even. Petershill won 1-0 here at Holm Park and Bankies returned the favour with a 3-2 win at a windswept following a Ross McPherson treble. Apart from “Archie”, of the current Clyde- bank squad only Ross Campbell and Mark Hailstones have netted against Petershill. Last Saturday a large and noisy Clydebank support travelled to Bellsdale Park to see in the new league season. The previous season Bankies emerged victorious from this venue following a comfortable 3-0 win. This time around Clydebank lost a first half goal before a fantastic Ian Gold strike squared the match before the break. In the second half an early Ross McPherson goal put Bankies ahead but Beith came back into the game and were more menacing although the Clydebank defence stood firm. In the dying stages Bankies gaffer Budgie McGhie sent on the mercurial Mark Hailstones who made history by scoring three minutes later. This landmark goal meant that Hail- stones had now scored for Clydebank in all four divisions and added to his tally from the Sectional League Cup, Central League Cup, West of Scotland Cup, Scottish Cup and Evening time Cup - a magnificent achievement. A late own goal sealed the win which was enough for Clydebank to top the table on goals difference for the first time in their short history back in the juniors.

Elsewhere this afternoon there are another four fixtures taking place. Second top Ashfield face a tricky trip to Adamslie Park to face eleventh placed Rob Roy but will be looking to add to the three points they picked up last weekend. Achinleck Talbot who sit fourth host basement boys Beith and will be ex- pected to take all three points. An interesting encounter takes place at Dunter- lie where eighth top Arthurlie entertain sixth top Cumnock where the home side will be looking to come out on top. The final fixture sees seventh placed Pollok await the visit of new boys Glenafton Athletic who sit tenth where the Glasgow side will be hoping to pick up the three points on offer.

Can Clydebank gain revenge for that defeat against Petershill here at Holm Park last term? Will they still be sitting proudly atop the table this evening? Ninety minutes of football will tell.

Clydebank couldn’t have hoped for a better start to the new Premier League Season as they got off to a flyer by thumping Beith by four goals to one. Goals from Gold, McPherson, Hailstones and a Wilson own goal turned around an early strike by Reid for the home side.

Much has been made of the fact that Clydebank lost two of their stars from last season, but if this kind of form can be main- tained then the loss of MacKinnon and Strachan will be no more than a distant memory. This was the ninth straight victory for the club in the league in a remarkable run that now stretches back to January.

The acquisition of the experienced Joe Andrews at first glance appears to be a fantastic piece of business by Budgie McGhie as he was involved in the build up of the Bankies first two goals and was unlucky not to find the net himself, as he crashed a shot off the bar midway through the first half.

It was the home side however, who made the brighter start. Made to shoot down the famous hill in the first half seemed to backfire on the Bankies as Beith rushed into a sixth minute lead. A low hard cross from the left was neatly finished by Andy Reid.

It took a while for Clydebank to feel their way into the match and the early goal added to the pressure. By the time Joe Andrew hit the cross bar the tide was turning, and it was only two minutes before the equaliser was scored. A fine passing move which saw Andrew deftly flick the ball to Ian Gold was finished with some aplomb as he beautifully curled the ball into the corner of the net.

The Bankies took the lead a minute into the second period. It was Andrew again who played a lovely pass beyond the Beith defence which Ross McPherson was able to latch onto. A much more confident looking McPherson strode into the box and smashed the ball into the net.

Clydebank should have wrapped the points up in the early moments of the second half. Gold was put through on goal but his prodded shot caught goalkeeper Greenwood’s heel and out for a corner. Paul Allum was then unlucky to see a shot go a foot over the bar.

With only a goal in it Beith began to come back into the game. This was the vital period of the match as the goal never game despite several near things. McGowan managed lift the ball beyond Hamilton, only to see it cleared away at the last second, and then Hamilton produced fine stops from Reid and McLean.

A miss by Irvine with only three minutes remaining was probably the most decisive as his diving header went fractionally wide of the post. From almost securing a point for Beith, to losing the game disastrously shows how cruel a sport football can be as Clydebank scored not once, but twice in the final moments.

Bankies two substitutes combined when Ally Graham made a fine run to the bye line squaring the ball for Hailstones to knock it in at the back post. Hailstones then turned provider by dispossessing a Beith defender and his attempted cross to Graham was cut out by Gary Wilson who only succeeded in putting past his own keeper.

In truth, there probably weren’t three goals in it, but the Bankies can be happy with their day’s work. Andrew, Martin and Wil- son were the best performers on the day, with McPherson, Allum and Gold not far behind. The second season in the top flight can always be an awkward season for a club, as there are no longer any surprises. It is only one game, but the signs are good that the club can be competitive once again.
