WE congratulate the Federation on the Chronicle having reached its 33rd issue; and fervently hope that the neces­ sary arrangements for its continuance will be carried through in the ensuing year, and its permanence secured as the only serial of the kind in the Empire. HE retirai of Dr M'Naught from the Presidency of T the Burns Federation after record and incom­ parable service, together with the election of Sir Robert Bruc0, LL.D., editor of The Gla~(Jow Herald, as his successor, marks the 1923 Annual Meeting at Ayr .as one of the most notable in its history. Instituted at Kilmarnock in 1885, the men who founded the Federation largely directed and controlled its destinies until this year of grace. Its first President. ex-Provost Sturrock, of Kilmarnock, continued in office for eight years (1892-1899). He was succeeded by Provost Mackay, also of Kilmarnock, who died in office in 1907. In succes­ sion thereafter Mr David Murray, M.A., Kilmarnock, Mr Willidlli Wall ace, LL.D., editor of The Glas(Jow Herald: and Capt. David Sneddon, Kilmarnock, each held office for onc year. Then came Mr Duncan M'Naught, LL.D. (1911- 1923), who, at the Ayr meeting in September, while retiring from office as President, obligingly agreed to remain locum tenens Editor of The Chronicle, a position which he has occupied unbrokenly since 1893. Except Mr Murray and Dr Wallace, these gentlemen were also founders of the Federation, and of them all, Dr M'Naught alone remains. Than those named, there has been no greater group of Burns enthusiasts in the Burns world; and that they not only laid broad and deep foundations, but even built thereon better than they knew, is now evideneed, for the Burns Federation is to-day a powerful bond of union, uniting in the brotherhood of Burns men and clubs in fraternal communion in and beyond the English speaking world. Full of years, and with an established record of notable 1V0rk, the apex stone of Dr M'Naught's Burns structure is his Truth About Burns, published little more than two years ago; and no book upon Burns is more authoritative, 2 and none more modestly and concisely written. During the thirty-one years of his editorship of The Ohronicle he has maintained it at a uniformly high standard, himself contributing many of the most valuable articles; and while, during its long period of unpaid contributions, there are a few efforts that might well have been omitted, by far the greater number are of real and permanent value. The several volumes now form one of the most authentic and reliable records extant alike of documents, tradition, and fact, as these from time to time have been brought to light; inasmuch as they have all been carefully examined and edited. Noteworthy also is it that many fictions have perished, and that many spurious charges upon the good name of Burns have passed into nothingness before the lamp of Truth. It can safely be said, that during the inception and development alike of the Federation and The Ohronicle, Dr M'Naught was at once their strong and enthusiastic mentor and guide; and none held Burns interests more closely next the heart, nor did any exercise a greater impress and influence upon them.

    Burns Supper Even Before His Death, Poet Robert Burns' Cottage At

    Burns Supper Even before his death, poet Robert Burns’ cottage at Alloway, Ayrshire, had been sold to the incorporation, or guild, of shoemakers of Ayr, one of whose members turned it into an alehouse. It was here, on 29 January 1801 (they got his birthday wrong) that soldiers of the Argyll Fencibles (militia) met to hear their band play – and to use the services of his cottage in its new role. The first recorded Burns Supper took place at Alloway in the same year, but on the anniversary of his death (21st July). It involved a speech and multiple toasts; to eat there was haggis (which was addressed) and, a mercifully lost tradition, sheep’s head; given the social status of those present, refreshment was probably wine and ale rather than whisky. Present were nine friends and patrons of Burns. Among them was a lady, though thereafter the Suppers were mostly (sometimes militantly) all-male affairs until far into the twentieth century: a curious slant on Burns’ own life as well as on the first dinner. The ‘toast to the lasses’ was traditionally thanks for the cooking and an appreciation of the women in Burns’ life, only later degenerating into a sexist (often misogynistic) rant. Celebrations were held twice yearly until 1809 when participants settled on January (25th), because this fell in a slack period of the agricultural year. Commercialisation of his birthplace did little to honour the memory of his life and work, and in 1822 the poet John Keats complained bitterly of how both the ambience and the landlord of the Alloway inn degraded Burns’ greatness.

    The Robert Burns World Federation Newsletter Issue 16 July 2015 This edition of the Newsletter continues to demonstrate the wonderful work being done by the Federation in promoting the life and works of Robert Burns with the younger generation. It is particularly gratifying to see the enthusiasm of pupils involved in the Primary Schools’ Festival and in a repeat performance of the Burns musical ‘Rabbie’ at the Edinburgh Fringe by St George’s Girls School, Edinburgh. Some very welcome thoughts on promoting Burns in the classroom are presented by a secondary school teacher and hopefully it will evoke a response. The rededication ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone for the Burns Mausoleum in Dumfries, some 200 years after the original event, is deservedly given full coverage.     A Directory To the Articles and Features Published in “The Burns Chronicle” 1892 – 2005 Compiled by Bill Dawson A “Merry Dint” Publication 2006 The Burns Chronicle commenced publication in 1892 to fulfill the ambitions of the recently formed Burns Federation for a vehicle for “narrating the Burnsiana events of the year” and to carry important articles on Burns Clubs and the developing Federation, along with contributions from “Burnessian scholars of prominence and recognized ability.” The lasting value of the research featured in the annual publication indicated the need for an index to these, indeed the 1908 edition carried the first listings, and in 1921, Mr. Albert Douglas of Washington, USA, produced an index to volumes 1 to 30 in “the hope that it will be found useful as a key to the treasures of the Chronicle” In 1935 the Federation produced an index to 1892 – 1925 [First Series: 34 Volumes] followed by one for the Second Series 1926 – 1945. I understand that from time to time the continuation of this index has been attempted but nothing has yet made it to general publication. I have long been an avid Chronicle collector, completing my first full set many years ago and using these volumes as my first resort when researching any specific topic or interest in Burns or Burnsiana. I used the early indexes and often felt the need for a continuation of these, or indeed for a complete index in a single volume, thereby starting my labour. I developed this idea into a guide categorized by topic to aid research into particular fields.
