Key to Genera of Tingidae in Florida
Insect Classification Spring 2003 Amanda Bisson, Sarah Clark, Matt Lehnert, and Rick Stein Key to TINGIDAE of Florida Lace Bugs Tingidae is a rather large family in the order Heteroptera containing approximately 250 genera and 2000 species worldwide. All are phytophagous (feeding on plants) and are host specific. In fact, despite the detailed key provided here, one of the most important pieces of information necessary for tingid identification is the name of the host plant. Thirty-nine species have been reported in Florida; however, only seven of those are commonly encountered. The most common species that occur in Florida include the azalea lace bug (Stephanitis pyrioides), the hawthorn lace bug (Corythucha cydoniae), the lantana lace bug (Teleonemia scrupulosa) and the sycamore lace bug (Corythucha ciliata). Other important species include the avocado lace bug (Pseudacysta perseae), the fringetree lace bug (Leptoypha mutica), and the oak lace bug (Corythucha floridana). Physical identification of tingids is done primarily through examination of the head, pronotum and hemelytra. Adult lace bugs get their name from the lace-like appearance of their dorsum. This is created by a reticulate network of ridges on the pronotum and hemelytra that divides the area into a series of cells of variable size and shape. Many tingids also bear a strongly developed bucculae. These are ventral flanges on either side of the head that border the rostrum. Other common characteristics of tingids include two-segmented tarsi and the absence of ocelli. Their antennae are four-segmented, with segments I and II short and thick and segment III usually much longer and more slender. -

ECOLOGICAL FACTORS AFFECTING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENT Gargaphia decoris DRAKE (HEMIPTERA: TINGIDAE) A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Science at Massey University, Manawatu, New Zealand Cecilia María Falla 2017 ABSTRACT The Brazilian lace bug (Gargaphia decoris Drake (Hemiptera:Tingidae)) was released in New Zealand in 2010 for the biological control of the invasive weed woolly nightshade (Solanum mauritianum Scopoli (Solanaceae)). Currently there is scarce information about the potential effect of ecological factors on the establishment of this biological control agent. This study investigated: 1) the effect of maternal care and aggregation on nymphal survival and development; 2) the effect of temperature, photoperiod and humidity on G. decoris performance; and 3) the effect of light intensity on S. mauritianum and G. decoris performance. Maternal care and aggregation are characteristic behaviours of G. decoris. These behaviours have an adaptive significance for the offspring and are key determinants for the survival of the species under natural conditions. Maternal care is reported to increase the survival and development of offspring under field conditions, and higher aggregations to increase the survival of the offspring. However, in this study, maternal care negatively affected the survival and development of the offspring, and higher aggregations had no significant impact on offspring survival. -

The poplar lace bug, Monosteira unicostata (Mulsant & Rey), is one of the most important pests of almond trees in the Mediterranean area. The developmental times and survival of the immature stages of this tingid were determined at 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34, 35.5, 37 and 39°C, 60 ± 10% relative humidity and under a 16L : 8D photoperiod. At 16 and 39°C, 100% mortality was recorded during immature development, with the egg, first and second nymphal instars the most susceptible. The lowest mortality was recorded at 28°C (9.8%). As temperature increased, the total developmental period decreased and the shortest duration was recorded at 34°C (12.1–12.2 d). At 37°C, the developmental time was slightly longer (12.5–13.0 d). The thermal requirement for complete devel- opment, from egg to adult, was 229.2 DD. Several non-linear models were fitted to the developmental rate data recorded for the range of temperatures tested. -

This is the first record in Switzerland. In 2003 another 22 specimens were found in those traps. — In February 2004 two egg clusters of C. arcuata from summer 2003 were found on fallen oak leaves in a mixed stand near Chiasso, Southern Switzerland. The oak lace bug probably reached the Swiss Canton of Ticino in 2001 or 2002, immigrating from Lombardy (Italy). In Italy the oak lace bug was introduced at least seve- ral years ago. The first record from Italy dates from spring 2000. — Morphology, behaviour and damage of C. arcuata are similar to those of the well known sycamore lace bug C. ciliata (Say), an- other American lace bug that was introduced to Europe, and that feeds on leaves of Platanus. A key to the most common species of Corythucha from North America is provided. -

V6T 1Z4 Tel: 604 822 3682, Fax: 604 822 2416 Email: [email protected] Abstract. Five hundred eighty-two Heteroptera taxa are listed for the Prairies Ecozone in Canada. This number represents 40.7% of the taxa reported for Canada and 79.2% of the taxa recorded from the three Prairie Provinces. The dominant components are species with a Nearctic distribution, excluding Beringia. However, the Great Basin-Prairies element is the most distinctive. Introduction Maw et al. (2000) listed the Heteroptera recorded from the three Prairie Provinces in Canada. Brooks and Kelton (1967) considered the aquatic and semi-aquatic Heteroptera of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, while Scudder et al. (2010) documented the aquatic Hemiptera recorded from the prairie grasslands and parkland. In the terrestrial Heteroptera, Kelton (1980) treated the plant bugs of the Prairie Provinces, and subsequent individual taxonomic papers have advanced the knowledge of many of the genera. Matsuda (1977) included prairie species in his consideration for the Aradidae of Canada, and Kelton (1978) did likewise for the Anthocoridae (s.l.). The only detailed annotated provincial list of Heteroptera available is that of Strickland (1953) for the province of Alberta, but this is now somewhat out of date. There are no published annotated lists for the provinces of Manitoba or Saskatchewan.
