Forestiera Lace Bugs Leptoypha elliptica (from Wheeler, 2002) (No common names) Leptoypha elliptica Leptoypha ilicis Contributor: Alfred G. Wheeler DESCRIPTION Taxonomy and Basic Description Both adults and nymphs of the family Tingidae are strictly phytophagous. Lace bugs are mostly host restricted, developing on plants of only one genus or several related genera. They are found mainly on woody plants, the nymphs feeding on lower surfaces of leaves. Their feeding on mesophyll tissues usually results in a bleached or chlorotic appearance of the upper leaf surface and dark spots of excrement on the lower surface. Some lace bugs feed on herbaceous vascular plants and species of one genus (Acalypta) feed mainly on mosses. Lace bugs associated with small trees and shrubs of the genus Forestiera (olive family; Oleaceae) include two morphologically similar species of Leptoypha. McAtee described L. elliptica from Texas in 1917; L. ilicis was described in 1919 from Georgia by Drake. Only recently was the specific name of the latter species shown to be a Leptoypha ilicis (from Wheeler, 2002) misnomer. This lace bug was named ilicis because of its assumed host association: Ilex sp. Its actual hosts are species of Forestiera, the plant mentioned in the original description having been misidentified. Forestiera species bear a superficial resemblance to certain species of Ilex (holly; family Aquifoliaceae). Leptoypha species are small (about 3 mm long or 0.12 inches), elongate or narrowly oblong, and straw yellow to reddish brown. A hood (prothoracic covering of the head) and paranota (lateral expansions of pronotum), which characterize many lace bugs, are lacking. Also absent is the translucent lacy appearance of the forewings (hemelytra) that is typical of the Tingidae; elevations of the forewings also are absent. -

Rapid Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) for: Corythucha arcuata November 2018 Summary and conclusions of the rapid PRA This rapid PRA is an update of one produced in 2007 and shows that the oak lace bug has the potential to add strain to trees and ecosystems which are already under threat from other pests and environmental factors. This pest has been present in Europe for some time, but in recent years its distribution has either expanded, or its population levels have increased so there is greater evidence of the potential effects of this pest, though still many uncertainties. The ratings for establishment potential and economic impact remain unchanged, however, more evidence of the potential of this pest to move on wood and wood products has led to a raising of the risk of entry, and evidence from Europe suggests that this pest may have a greater potential environmental impact than previously rated. Risk of entry Although oak trees are the preferred host, there are a number of other tree species that can be potential hosts, and therefore entry has been assessed accordingly. Entry on plants for planting has been assessed as moderately likely with medium confidence. The oak lace bug is most likely to be associated with plants for planting when overwintering under loose bark scales and in crevices. Most plants imported into the UK are likely to be young trees, with few bark crevices. Larger trees do represent a significant 1 risk, as it would be difficult to determine if they were pest free, however the numbers are likely to be fewer. -

Ruhoff Introduction A treatise of the generic names of the family Tingidae from a global standpoint embodies problems similar to those frequently encountered in corresponding studies in other animal groups. The more im- portant criteria, including such basic desiderata as fixation of type species, synonyms, priority, and dates of technical publications implicate questions concomitant with recent trends toward the clarification and stabilization of zoological nomenclature. Zoogeography, predicated and authenticated on the generic level by the distribution of genera and species, is portrayed here by means of tables, charts, and maps of the tingifauna of the world. This visual pattern of distribution helps one to form a more vivid concept of the family and its hierarchic levels of subfamilies and genera. To a limited extent the data indicate distributional concentrations and probable centers of evolution and dispersal paths of genera. The phylogenetic relationship of genera is not discussed. POTENTIAL OF A NATIVE LACE BUG (LEPTOYPHA MUTICA) FOR BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF CHINESE PRIVET (LIGUSTRUM SINENSE) By JESSICA A. KALINA (Under the Direction of S. Kristine Braman and James L. Hanula) Abstract This work was done to better understand the lace bug Leptoypha mutica Say (Hemiptera: Tingidae) and its potential for biological control of Chinese privet, Ligustrum sinense Lour (Oleaceae). L. mutica host utilization of Chinese privet was confirmed in a no choice test. In choice tests with plant species Chinese privet, swamp privet (Foresteria acuminata Michx), and green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh) L. mutica preferred green ash. The duration of development of L. mutica on Chinese privet from egg to adult ranged from 24.4 to 57.1 days at o o o o the temperatures: 20 C, 24 C, 28 C, and 32 C. Estimated threshold temperatures (To) and calculated thermal unit requirements (K) for development of egg, nymphal, and complete development were 11.0oC, 9.9oC, 10.5oC and 211.9, 326.8, 527.4 degree-days (DD). The only suspected specific Leptoypha spp. natural enemy found was a mymarid wasp, but was not concluded to be limiting factor for L. hospita’s success. Moffett Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, 3101 Valley Life Sciences, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720, U.S.A. ABSTRACT The lack of recent critiques about terminology has led to the frequent misuse or confusingly varied use of the words that are more or less specific to the field of terrestrial canopy biology. I provide definitions for ca 170 terms and subterms, with translations into four languages. Rather than limit coverage to tree crowns, I define canopy biology as the study of life within any aboveground parts of all plant communities, temperate and tropical. This broadened perspective enables ecologists to consider the entire range of challenges faced by organisms living in aboveground plant life, from just above the rhizosphere to the outer limits of plant growth into the atmosphere. Further, this redefinition may reduce the potential for anthropocentric biases in interpreting life on trees or other plants; encourage the use of alternative ecosystems for hypotheses that may be difficult to address in treetops; and promote more general conceptual thinking about life on vegetation, most notably the importance of scaling in ecology. Insect Classification Standards 2020
RECOMMENDED INSECT CLASSIFICATION FOR UGA ENTOMOLOGY CLASSES (2020) In an effort to standardize the hexapod classification systems being taught to our students by our faculty in multiple courses across three UGA campuses, I recommend that the Entomology Department adopts the basic system presented in the following textbook: Triplehorn, C.A. and N.F. Johnson. 2005. Borror and DeLong’s Introduction to the Study of Insects. 7th ed. Thomson Brooks/Cole, Belmont CA, 864 pp. This book was chosen for a variety of reasons. It is widely used in the U.S. as the textbook for Insect Taxonomy classes, including our class at UGA. It focuses on North American taxa. The authors were cautious, presenting changes only after they have been widely accepted by the taxonomic community. Below is an annotated summary of the T&J (2005) classification. Some of the more familiar taxa above the ordinal level are given in caps. Some of the more important and familiar suborders and families are indented and listed beneath each order. Note that this is neither an exhaustive nor representative list of suborders and families. It was provided simply to clarify which taxa are impacted by some of more important classification changes. Please consult T&J (2005) for information about taxa that are not listed below. Unfortunately, T&J (2005) is now badly outdated with respect to some significant classification changes. Therefore, in the classification standard provided below, some well corroborated and broadly accepted updates have been made to their classification scheme. Plants of The Week » * Annual - Plectranthus 'Mona Lavendar' (Plectranthus spp.) Belonging to the mint family and having the common name SWEDISH IVY, this annual has incredible lavender blooms that show off above the plant. In Ohio gardens, it is an annual that grows with a rounded mound shape and gets around 18" tall and as wide. 'Mona Lavender' can be used in containers, bedding areas, and mixed in the perennial garden. In large containers, it makes an excellent filler plant. The rich purplish-green foliage adds color to containers; it is shiny and deep-green on top with a rich purple on the underside. The plant takes full sun or light shade and is considered deer resistant. The flower spikes have tubular lavender flowers that last for a long period of time, making deadheading almost unnecessary.
