Sabree, Advisor Rachelle Adams Norman Johnson Laura Kubatko Copyrighted by Alejandro Otero-Bravo 2020 Abstract Nutritional symbioses between bacteria and insects are prevalent, diverse, and have allowed insects to expand their feeding strategies and niches. It has been well characterized that long-term insect-bacterial mutualisms cause genome reduction resulting in extremely small genomes, some even approaching sizes more similar to organelles than bacteria. While several symbioses have been described, each provides a limited view of a single or few stages of the process of reduction and the minority of these are of extracellular symbionts. This dissertation aims to address the knowledge gap in the genome evolution of extracellular insect symbionts using the stink bug – Pantoea system. Specifically, how do these symbionts genomes evolve and differ from their free- living or intracellular counterparts? In the introduction, we review the literature on extracellular symbionts of stink bugs and explore the characteristics of this system that make it valuable for the study of symbiosis. We find that stink bug symbiont genomes are very valuable for the study of genome evolution due not only to their biphasic lifestyle, but also to the degree of coevolution with their hosts. i In Chapter 1 we investigate one of the traits associated with genome reduction, high mutation rates, for Candidatus ‘Pantoea carbekii’ the symbiont of the economically important pest insect Halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug, and evaluate its potential for elucidating host distribution, an analysis which has been successfully used with other intracellular symbionts. -

INSECTS OF MICRONESIA Heteroptera: Pentatomoidea1 By HERBERT RUCKES RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, DEPARTMENT OF ENTOMOLOGY AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, NEW YORK EMERlTUS PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY, CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK INTRODUCTION The Pentatomoidea consists of the families Plataspidae, Cydnidae, Pentatomidae, Acanthosomidae, Phloeidae, Urostylidae, Aphylidae, and Lestoniidae. In this classification I am following the terminology proposed by China and Miller (l955, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist. XII, 8: 257-267). Of these various families, representatives of the Phloeidae, Urostylidae, Lestoniidae, and Aphylidae have not, as yet, been recorded from Micronesia. The Phloei dae, represented by two genera, are found only in Brazil. The Urostylidae, however, are native to India; China, Japan, Australia, the Philippines, and intermediate islands such as Borneo and Java. It is rather surprising that examples of this family have not been taken from Micronesia since the other pentatomoid fauna of these islands is, for the most part, derived from the nearby Australian, Asian, and adjacent insular regions where the Uro stylidae occur. Aphylidae and Lestoniidae are strictly Australian families, each represented by a single genus. The remaining families have varying representation in the Micronesian fauna. A key to the known genera is provided, together with redescription and figures. The genus Paramenestheus is revised, including a key to the species and figures to all the included taxa. Two new genera and eight new species are discovered and described. A phylogenetic analysis is included for the Aeptini, with two approaches, cladistic and maximum likelihood, both morphologically based. After these analysis it is concluded that it is a monophyletic tribe and has to be split into two subtribes: Aeptina (including Aeptus and Eribotes) and Menesthina (including Aeliosoma, Hillieria, Menestheus, Paramenestheus, Pseudaelia, New Genus 1, New Genus 2.). Diagnoses for both subtribes are included. Biogeographically it is hypothesized that the Aeptini have a Gondwanian origin which explains it current disjunct distribution in Africa and Australia. The importance of the findings on this dissertation, as well as the relationships among Aeptini and other Pentatominae groups is commented and disccused. -

Until recently, only ten low-molecular weight compounds, a sesquiterpene, and dimers of (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal had been reported from the contents of P. subquadrata glands. Here, the main goal was to distinguish the volatile compounds released by adult males, adult females and nymphs of the two species. The analyses revealed 103 compounds, of which 44 were exclusive to Phloeophana longirostris and 15 were exclusive to Phloea subquadrata. The data were analyzed by chemometric methods, which discriminated the phloeid species by developmental stage and sex.
