Experts Weigh in on Istrian Food
The “Authentic” Blend: Experts Weigh in on Istrian Food By: Daša Ličen Abstract This article examines the discourses and concepts of regional Istrian gourmet heroes, who bring into being and distribute ideas on what “authentic” Istrian cuisine is. Citizens of three different countries who speak four different languages, these experts consider themselves most of all Istrian and characterize Istrian foods as alternative foods in contrast to mainstream agro-industrial varieties. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, this essay focuses on how these experts arbitrarily use adjectives such as “authentic,” “traditional,” “natural” and others in overlapping ways which I will show create obstacles to labelling the precise terminology of each. Ultimately I argue that these descriptors are all interchangeable in the experts’ discourse(s) on Istrian food, furthermore denoting Istrian food itself, although most of the time they absolutely do not mean the same. This mishmash is nowadays one of the main elements unifying the Istrian region as such, and while similarly present in many different places, Istria’s food movement is unique, because of its geographical and historical contexts. Key terms: Istria, alternative foodways, experts, authenticity, region, Mediterranean diet. Introduction Experts like to put the word Istrian before the name of a recipe to denote that the dish belongs specifically to the Istrian region of Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, or they use some other positive adjective to reconfirm the quality of the product. Dishes thus carry names such as “good homemade bread,” Ličen, Daša. 2016. “The “Authentic” Blend: Experts Weigh in on Istrian Food.” Digest: a Journal of Foodways and Culture 5:2: n. -
The Ethnographic Research of the Digital Divide
DIGITAL DIVIDE IN ISTRIA A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Igor Matic August 2006 The dissertation entitled DIGITAL DIVIDE IN ISTRIA by IGOR MATIC has been approved for the School of Telecommunications and the College of Communication by Karen E. Riggs Professor, School of Telecommunications Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, College of Communication ABSTRACT MATIC, IGOR, Ph. D., August 2006, Mass Communication DIGITAL DIVIDE IN ISTRIA (209 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Karen E. Riggs This dissertation covers the Digital Divide phenomena in the Istrian region. Istria is a Northern Adriatic peninsula that is administratively divided between three European countries: Croatia (which covers approximately 90% of the peninsula), Slovenia (app. 7%), and Italy (app. 3%). In this dissertation my goal was to articulate the most influential theoretical frameworks that are used to explain the Digital Divide today and I try to give an explanation of the issue through ethnographic procedures. The goals of this research include the examination of the current Digital Divide debate, extension of the theory toward the local understanding and perception of this global phenomenon. Additionally, I wanted to identify different interpretations of the Digital Divide in three countries within one region and compare the differences and similarities in new technology usage and perceptions. Also, I was interested to see how age - which is described as one of the major Digital Divide factors - influences the relationships between older and younger generations, specifically relationships between parents and children, instructors, students and co-workers. -

The Draft Amendment proposes a fundamental change in tautog management, moving away from management on a coastwide basis towards regional management. In addition, Draft Amendment 1 proposes the establishment of a commercial harvest tagging program, as well as new goals and objectives, biological reference points and fishing mortality targets, and a stock rebuilding schedule. Specifically, Draft Amendment 1 proposes delineating the stock into four regions due to differences in biology and fishery characteristics, as well as limited coastwide movement. The State Wants It So, and the Folk Cannot Do Anything Against the State Anyway
Nar, umjet. 3312, 1996, str. 139-155, B. Brumen, The State Wants It So, and the Folk. Izvorni znanstveni članak UDK 39:32 Primljeno: 8.10.1996. THE STATE WANTS IT SO, AND THE FOLK CANNOT DO ANYTHING AGAINST THE STATE ANYWAY BORUT BRUMEN Filozofska fakulteta, Ljubljana After Slovenia and Croatia proclaimed their independence, a new defining of the state borders took place. The result of a new situation is, among other things, that the population from the both sides of the border had to re-define their social and cultural space. The author did fieldwork in the village of Sv. Peter, placed on today's border between Slovenia and Croatia near the river Dragonja. On basis of his fieldwork, he analyses the process of disappearing of many intercultural communications between Croatian and Slovenian population, as well as the process of disappearing of kinship, friendship, economic and other relations. At the same time, he discovers new socio-cultural processes, such as a shift in identity, or, to be more precise, forming of new identity (from ethnic to national) and the changes that follow the new concept of time and space. As a political intervention in a particular space, the new state border between Slovenia and Croatia has changed not only the physical environment, but also forced the inhabitants of the border villages to 139 Nar. umjet. 3312, 1996, str. 139-155, B. For a mapping of the languages/dialects of Italy and regional varieties of Italian Introduction Unifi ed late, Italy is well-known for its great linguistic diversity. This diversity has been thoroughly covered by linguistic atlases such as the Italian-Swiss Atlas (Jaberg / Jud 1928-1940), the Italian Linguistic Atlas (Bartoli et al. 1995), or the linguistic atlases of the Dolomites (Goebl 2003, 2012), Sicily (Sottile 2018), Calabria (Krefeld 2019) and the Piedmont mountains (Cugno / Cusan 2019), for which projects have undertaken to digitise a portion of the material (Tisato 2010) 1 . In other countries, too, various projects have aimed to make the dialect data collected in the 20th century more widely accessible: in France (Goebl 2002; Oliviéri et al. -

This Binary Universe" CD/DVD Called "The First Major Electronic Work of the New Millennium"
July 12, 2006 DTS Entertainment Releases Groundbreaking Work by BT; "This Binary Universe" CD/DVD Called "the First Major Electronic Work of the New Millennium" AGOURA HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 2006--DTS Entertainment, the entertainment label of DTS, Inc. (Nasdaq:DTSI), today announced an August 29th street date for "This Binary Universe," the newest release from legendary musician/composer/producer BT. A groundbreaking two-disc set that is part record, part short film series, the CD/DVD combines seven unique tracks composed in 5.1-channel surround sound fused with stunning animations by some of today's finest computer artists and animators. "This Binary Universe" is a journey of sight and sound, on the artistic and technological cutting edge of both music and animation. Stephen Fortner, Technical Editor at Keyboard Magazine, has called "This Binary Universe" "...fine art that works on many levels, mind-bendingly deep but a pleasure to kick back and just listen to. In a hundred years, it could well be studied as the first major electronic work of the new millennium. It's that good." "This Binary Universe" unifies the two genres for which BT is most well known: electronic music and film scoring. Varying from lo-fi classical pieces with jazz chord structures to glitch and IDM-influenced micro-rhythmic, introspective, electronic tone poems, BT utilizes hand-designed digital instruments alongside a broad range of analog musical instruments to create a work that defies classification. Additionally, all of the animations have been created in high definition, allowing the album to be shown in cinemas in full resolution with a 5.1-channel soundtrack, as well as providing the option to utilize the content in the next-generation, high-definition optical disc formats Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.
