Showcase Gallery Small Faces 3 March - 21 April 2017 Contributors booklet The Showcase Gallery is a contemporary art gallery that is part of Southampton Solent University, and situated in the Cultural Quarter of Southampton. The Small Faces exhibition is a postcard portrait exhibition by everyone, for everyone; an open exhibition where every submission is shown. The exhibition was created out of a desire for the gallery to explore new and meaningful connections with a wide community of people - to bring them together in one collective creative act. The inspiration for the format of the exhibition came from Joe Ross and the National Gallery of Ontario who hosted a similar exhibition in Canada in 2006. Using postcards ensured that the project remained as inclusive as possible; postcards are small, cheap and readily available and require no framing. A call went out to artists In December 2016 and workshops offered to organisations and schools with the ambitious target of 5,000 cards to be submitted by the end of February 2017. This amount could potentially transform the white walls of the gallery into a large scale installation – literally a sea of faces. This project was a highly experimental intervention, with no way of knowing if we would even remotely meet the target. It is now March and not only has the target of 5,000 been reached, it is over 7,000 and still growing. The Gallery team and volunteers have worked hard to ensure that every single submission is shown, making the installation itself a collaborative process. Many local and national schools have taken part while local artists have brought people together within their communities to create group work. Internationally, artists from India, Sweden, Bosnia and Austria have submitted work. There are many stories behind the art; people who have never drawn before trying something new, artists drawing while having medical treatment, portraits of people who matter most. What is outstanding is the wealth of talent and the variety of approaches to what is, in essence, a very simple yet effective, format. The Small Faces exhibition has been allowed to grow organically and take on a life of its own and enabled the gallery to develop new connections and new ways of working. We are grateful to all groups, schools and individuals who contributed to this exhibition.
