PRIVATE FISH DEALER LIST Pond and lake owners may desire to purchase their own fish for stocking purposes from a private source. There are numerous Illinois private dealers and out-of-state private dealers that raise and supply fish for stocking purposes. Their prices vary according to the species, size, availability, and delivery method. Refer to the Aquatic Life Approved Species List for a complete list of species that are approved for stocking in private waters in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources does not assume any responsibility, recommend, or endorse the following listings, but provides this for the convenience of those who may desire a private source of fish for stocking purposes. It is recommended that those who desire to purchase fish consult with their county IDNR Fisheries Biologist or the Natural Resources Conservation Service Office.
It is unlawful for any person(s) to transport, ship, or convey within the State, any live Grass Carp or White Amur Ctenopharyngodon idella, Bighead Carp Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, Silver Carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, or hybrid of any of these species, Tilapia spp., and other species not on the Aquatic Life Approved Species List, unless that person possesses a "Restricted Species Transportation/Stocking Permit" issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. With a bill of sale, pond owners may legally possess and/or transport live, triploid (sterile) Grass Carp (over 4" in length) purchased from an aquaculture permit holder or licensed fish dealer.
It is unlawful for any person(s) to stock Tilapia species in Illinois waters. Tilapia are not on the Aquatic Life Approved Species List, but are allowed for aquaculture with an Aquaculture Permit and a Letter of Authorization to possess Tilapia. Aquatic Life Dealers may keep live Tilapia for sale at a market so long as all fish are dead upon sale.
