Sports Newsletter August M B I S S P O R T S N E W S L E T T E R F R I D A Y 2 0 A U G U S T 2 0 2 1 "WE ARE WHAT WE REPEATEDLY DO. EXCELLENCE, THEN, IS NOT AN ACT BUT A HABIT" F R O M T H E S I D E L I N E S As we go back into lockdown again and our scheduled trainings and games take a break and it becomes just about us, consider this poem and think about what habits you will keep going or might even start: I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Half the things you do, you might just as well turn over to me, and I will be able to do them quickly, correctly. I am easily managed - you must merely be firm with me. Show me exactly how you want something done, and after a few lessons I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great people; and alas, of all failures as well. I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a human being. You may run me for a profit or turn me for ruin - it makes no difference to me. Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you. I AM HABIT. However, it is too early at this stage to draw any assumptions; we will continue to monitor this very closely and keep the lines of communication open. We will ensure our decision making is in line with the intent of the MoE, MoH and Government. Despite the current level of uncertainty, we have our fingers crossed that the 2021 Anchor AIMS Games goes ahead and we create a positive and memorable experience for all. I am mindful that this will be a particularly anxious time for your everybody. I truly appreciate your level of commitment, effort, and the huge workload undertaken for you to prepare for the Games. B A S K E T B A L L On Wednesday 18 August the Team 1 Girls Basketball Team went to a Basketball Zone Day with 12 other teams. At the zone day, we competed in five 20 minute games that ran across the whole day. We won our first two games and also won our quarter-final game. We were very proud as we bet a very tough team. This meant that we had made it into the semi-finals where we would have the chance to come first. During the semi-final, both teams were very similar in the score. It only came down to the last couple of goals by Belmont to secure their win. Unfortunately, we were unable to move on to the final. At the end of the day, we came 4th overall, which was better than we all had expected. A big thank you to Mrs Davidson, our coach Aaron and manager Brian. C R O S S C O U N T R Y On Wednesday 11 August, the top runners from MBIS attended a Cross Country Zone Day at Sanders Reserve. We got on the bus, nervous and excited as we sat down in the rain, waiting for our race. 17 schools were participating in this event, and they were all trying to beat us but we said otherwise. Everyone else did a sensational job. A never ending hill to start the race challenged many riders but the MBIS team of Blake Meldrum, Holly Christiansen, Andrew Stephenson, Gus Mackenzie-Brayne, Jakson Cunningham, Kylan Donaldson & Connor Lloyd-Read nailed it. Congratulations to Holly who placed 2nd in the U14 Girls race. N O R T H H A R B O U R Q U I C K R I P R U G B Y & S E V E N S 72 awesome athletes had a fantastic day of rugby last week at the North Harbour Zone Day. Our AIMS Quick Rip and Girls' A Quick Rip teams went undefeated, with the rest having a variety of wins, draws and losses - but most of all, we had heaps of fun. Many thanks to Mrs W, Mr Lancaster and Mr Kruyen Jnr for running the day, it was epic. N E T B A L L 7/4 On Wednesday 11 August, Murrays Bay Year 8 Team 4 and Year 7 Team 4 competed at the Netball North Harbour Teams 2, 3 & 4 zone day. We competed in 5 games against 4 different teams across the North Shore. We played lots of teams we hadn't versed before and even if we didn't win it was so much fun! We came in 5th overall. 8/4 After we tied in our first game against Carmel 8/2, we felt confident in our abilities and we were ready to face the other competitors. Our second and third games all went off without a hitch and we ended up winning all of them. But sadly just before our fourth game one of our players was injured and could not play in the next round. Though we had no subs left we still played on and won to go through. In our final game, we played our hearts out but unfortunately lost, 7 to 8 to finish 4th and we all felt proud of what we had achieved and look forward to our future games. S P O R T S C A M P On Monday 9th August, the MBIS Sports Camp Teams, consisting of 32 Year 7 students and 32 Year 8 students, travelled down to Totara Springs, Matamata. We felt extremely privileged to be a part of the 2021 sports camp team and to have the opportunity to represent Murrays Bay Intermediate School. It was a loud, energy filled bus ride as we excitedly prepared ourselves for what was to come and the sports we would play. After 2 hours, we finally arrived and settled into our accomodation before getting straight into athletics. The next day, we woke up and attended our team meeting, before indulging in a delicious breakfast and Quality Living - we would meet together with the eight other schools where valuable lessons and concepts about life and sport were shared. Our days were exceptionally busy as we played a huge array of sports including hockey, netball, touch, football, wallball, foosball, croquet and much, much more. We experienced many wins and losses but the biggest highlight of all was making new friends and amazing memories. PAGE 4 In the evenings, after dinner, we participated in night sports with our day only finishing at 9.30 pm. On Thursday night, all 8 schools performed their chants. Ours was very well rehearsed and we were all very proud of ourselves. By the time Friday came around we were all really sad to be leaving. Before we departed Totara Springs, we had prize giving. All teams did very well and we were so excited to come away with three trophies! We were stoked at our achievements! WRITTEN BY SIENNA McFARLAND & HOLLY WALKINGTON W A T E R P O L O W I N T E R F E S T From 8th to the 11th of August, four Murrays Bay Intermediate water polo teams competed in the Winter Festival Tournament held at 4 different venues across Auckland. Everyone played their best games and represented Murrays Bay Intermediate with pride. Even though there were many challenges, we still pushed through and played to the best of our abilities. A big thank you to all coaches and parent helpers, without you this would have never been possible.

  • AIMS GAMES 2021 / Initial Letter to Parents and Caregivers
March 2021 AIMS GAMES 2021 / Initial Letter to Parents and Caregivers The AIMS Games (www.nzaimsport.co.nz/) is an International Intermediate Schools Sporting Championship, which will be attended this year by more than 330 schools from throughout New Zealand. This week-long sports event is held annually in Mt Maunganui, Tauranga, and will take place from Saturday 4 September to Friday 10 September 2021. Various venues around Tauranga will be used to cater for the various sports codes represented at this tournament. This year, it is anticipated that over 11,000 competitors will attend to compete in over 20 sports, including: Badminton, Basketball, BMX Racing, Cross Country + Cross Country, Football, Futsal, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Indoor Bowls, Netball, Hip Hop, Aerobics, Rock Climbing, Rippa Rugby, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, and Yachting. Check the AIMS Website for a full list of sporting codes. Once again we intend to send a substantial team, covering a number of sporting codes. It is the policy of the school to send our high performing athletes. Consideration is given to the level that competitors have achieved in previous SEZ competitions, the size of the overall group, the cost implications to parents and the school, disruption to the school and classroom programmes and logistical requirements. The school has reserved the right to determine which sports we will enter and which students will attend. The school will finalise the sporting codes we will enter by the end of April. The cost of the registration to compete in the tournament, plus food, transport, accommodation and all other costs will need to be met by you.

We are hoping for smooth sailing this year with minimal covid-19 disruptions! Whether you are new or returning, we look forward to working alongside you and are very committed to encouraging and promoting lifelong learning and involvement in competitive or social sport and physical activity for all. We know that success in sport is a result of the effort and commitment from students, coaches and from parents, whanau and volunteers. We are fortunate to have staff members who are experienced in teaching, coaching and competing in a range of sporting codes and are therefore very well-equipped to mentor students towards meeting their personal bests. However, with such large participation numbers we simply do not have enough staff to cover all teams and events. Therefore we value the help and support from our parent and whanau community who enable us to help provide the best possible support to our students. I have no doubt that 2021 will be yet another enjoyable and successful year for all involved. Warm Regards, Nicola Kaiwai Director of Sport 3 A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL Through our very nature, Albany Junior High School is recognised as having both the expertise and the experience of leading high quality learning for adolescents.
