"WE ARE WHAT WE REPEATEDLY DO. EXCELLENCE, THEN, IS NOT AN ACT BUT A HABIT"

F R O M T H E S I D E L I N E S

As we go back into lockdown again and our scheduled trainings and games take a break and it becomes just about us, consider this poem and think about what habits you will keep going or might even start:

I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I will push you onward or drag you down to failure. I am completely at your command. Half the things you do, you might just as well turn over to me, and I will be able to do them quickly, correctly. I am easily managed - you must merely be frm with me. Show me exactly how you want something done, and after a few lessons I will do it automatically. I am the servant of all great people; and alas, of all failures as well. I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine plus the intelligence of a human being. You may run me for a proft or turn me for ruin - it makes no diference to me. Take me, train me, be frm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you. I AM HABIT.

AN UPDATE FROM VICKI SEMPLE, AIMS GAMES TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR

With the country in Alert level 4 until Saturday 21 August, and Auckland/Coromandel until Wednesday 25 August, our timeline for making decisions is short, with 25,000 Anchor AIMS Games attendees arriving in Tauranga from around the country from Saturday 4 September 2021. However, it is too early at this stage to draw any assumptions; we will continue to monitor this very closely and keep the lines of communication open. We will ensure our decision making is in line with the intent of the MoE, MoH and Government. Despite the current level of uncertainty, we have our fngers crossed that the 2021 Anchor AIMS Games goes ahead and we create a positive and memorable experience for all. I am mindful that this will be a particularly anxious time for your everybody. I truly appreciate your level of commitment, efort, and the huge workload undertaken for you to prepare for the Games.

On Wednesday 18 August the Team 1 Girls Team went to a Basketball Zone Day with 12 other teams. At the zone day, we competed in fve 20 minute games that ran across the whole day. We won our frst two games and also won our quarter-fnal game. We were very proud as we bet a very tough team. This meant that we had made it into the semi-fnals where we would have the chance to come frst. During the semi-fnal, both teams were very similar in the score. It only came down to the last couple of goals by Belmont to secure their win. Unfortunately, we were unable to move on to the fnal. At the end of the day, we came 4th overall, which was better than we all had expected. A big thank you to Mrs Davidson, our coach Aaron and manager Brian.

On Wednesday 11 August, the top runners from MBIS attended a Cross Country Zone Day at Sanders Reserve. We got on the bus, nervous and excited as we sat down in the rain, waiting for our race. 17 schools were participating in this event, and they were all trying to beat us but we said otherwise. Everyone else did a sensational job. WRITTEN BY SIENNA SHIELDS, MELA ANDREWS & OLIVIA APPERLEY

Even though the sun was shining for the third race at Totara Park in the Auckland Schools MTB series, there was plenty of MUD, making it tough riding! A never ending hill to start the race challenged many riders but the MBIS team of Blake Meldrum, Holly Christiansen, Andrew Stephenson, Gus Mackenzie-Brayne, Jakson Cunningham, Kylan Donaldson & Connor Lloyd-Read nailed it. Congratulations to Holly who placed 2nd in the U14 Girls race.

72 awesome athletes had a fantastic day of rugby last week at the North Harbour Zone Day. Our AIMS Quick Rip and Girls' A Quick Rip teams went undefeated, with the rest having a variety of wins, draws and losses - but most of all, we had heaps of fun. Many thanks to Mrs W, Mr Lancaster and Mr Kruyen Jnr for running the day, it was epic.

7/4 On Wednesday 11 August, Murrays Bay Year 8 Team 4 and Year 7 Team 4 competed at the North Harbour Teams 2, 3 & 4 zone day. We competed in 5 games against 4 diferent teams across the North Shore. We played lots of teams we hadn't versed before and even if we didn't win it was so much fun! We came in 5th overall.

8/4 After we tied in our frst game against Carmel 8/2, we felt confdent in our abilities and we were ready to face the other competitors. Our second and third games all went of without a hitch and we ended up winning all of them. But sadly just before our fourth game one of our players was injured and could not play in the next round. Though we had no subs left we still played on and won to go through. In our fnal game, we played our hearts out but unfortunately lost, 7 to 8 to fnish 4th and we all felt proud of what we had achieved and look forward to our future games.

On Monday 9th August, the MBIS Sports Camp Teams, consisting of 32 Year 7 students and 32 Year 8 students, travelled down to Totara Springs, Matamata. We felt extremely privileged to be a part of the 2021 sports camp team and to have the opportunity to represent Murrays Bay Intermediate School. It was a loud, energy flled bus ride as we excitedly prepared ourselves for what was to come and the sports we would play. After 2 hours, we fnally arrived and settled into our accomodation before getting straight into athletics. The next day, we woke up and attended our team meeting, before indulging in a delicious breakfast and Quality Living - we would meet together with the eight other schools where valuable lessons and concepts about life and sport were shared. Our days were exceptionally busy as we played a huge array of sports including hockey, netball, touch, football, wallball, foosball, croquet and much, much more. We experienced many wins and losses but the biggest highlight of all was making new friends and amazing memories. PAGE 4

In the evenings, after dinner, we participated in night sports with our day only fnishing at 9.30 pm. On Thursday night, all 8 schools performed their chants. Ours was very well rehearsed and we were all very proud of ourselves. By the time Friday came around we were all really sad to be leaving. Before we departed Totara Springs, we had prize giving. All teams did very well and we were so excited to come away with three trophies! We were stoked at our achievements! WRITTEN BY SIENNA McFARLAND & HOLLY WALKINGTON

From 8th to the 11th of August, four Murrays Bay Intermediate teams competed in the Winter Festival Tournament held at 4 diferent venues across Auckland. Everyone played their best games and represented Murrays Bay Intermediate with pride. Even though there were many challenges, we still pushed through and played to the best of our abilities. A big thank you to all coaches and parent helpers, without you this would have never been possible. 8A1 Last Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 8A1 water polo team competed in the A grade of Winterfest. We started of strong, by beating Auckland Normal Intermediate, Northcross and St. Peters. Then we had a tough game against St. Kents with a score of 6 all with 1 minute to go. They scored and we unfortunately couldn’t pull the win away. We then had a hard game against St. Cuths and lost with the score 9-3. We ended up playing for 5th and 6th against Carmel, we got the win with a score of 13-1, overall there were many challenges but we all enjoyed it. 8A2 We had a tough frst game against Dio and tied 4 all. The next game we played was Kings and after a lot of back and forth we lost 4-2. The next game we played was against Carmel and after a bad start we lost 11-6. Our next game was against Mount Maunganui and we lost 17-3. After our three losses we thought we had no chance against our next game Rosmini, but after a tough game we tied 6 all. For our last game, we played Northcross for 11th place and won 6-5. The tournament was quite challenging and even though we lost most of our games we had a fun time playing. 7A1 The tournament was very hard and the teams we went up against were very good. Each day we had to wake up quite early as we had 2 games each day. We won half of our games. We beat Glenield, Dio and then lost 4-6 against St. Kents. We beat Northcross and St Cuthberts before losing to place 8th out of the 20 teams. Thank very much Jeremy, Taze and Tom for coaching us.

7A2 Our frst game on Friday was played at Sacred Heart College. We went up against MMI White and lost 13 to 4. After that we played Remuera Orange and tied 4 to 4. On Saturday we played St. Cuthbert's White and won 10 to 4, and in the second game we played TNIS A and lost 1 to 20. After that loss, we came back with a win on Sunday this time at St. Cuthbert's College against Remuera Purple. In our fnal game at the National Aquatic Centre, we went up against Kings Maroon and won to fnish 4th in pool D and 13th place overall in C Grade. PAGE 5
