Everyone developed so much over the course of their AIMS competition with many excellent moments of play. Our MMI team showed a great team spirit being supportive of each other on and off the court. New friends were made and hopefully, for the majority of our students who were brand new to badminton this year, they have found a new sport they will be able to carry on in the years to come. David was our AIMS player of the tournament due to his relentless positivity and unwavering support of his teammates. Some of the highlights for our team were Emily and Luca making it to the semis for their division (both placed 3rd equal) and Isaac qualifying in the 2nd division. A beautiful moment also came in Isaac’s division 2 game, where he was presented with a Taonga from his opponent from the Cook Islands”, Stephano Vakatini. To quote Isaac’s mum: Isaac was delighted to receive this taonga from his opponent as a token of respect and kindness. I really believe this epitomises the spirit of the AIMS games and felt that this moment could be shared and celebrated as such. What a special moment it was to witness. I think I even shed a tear.” Alison Goldie A big thank you to the parents that came to support our students and those that were able to help with last-minute transport. I also have to give a special mention to Tarryn Espitalier, our coach from BOP badminton, for giving us so much of her time, on and off the court and to Delwyn Cooper who ran such an excellent competition and who does such an excellent, positive, job in supporting the development of badminton across the Bay and NZ. We had 3 out of four teams medal in the 3 person Team Race. Our Year 7 girls top 3 Mackenzie Bryant, Asha James and Hannah Parkinson placed 1st. The Year 8 boys Sean Collins, Adisen Mahy and Macka Wagstaff placed 1st. Our Year 7 boys Harry Anderson, Samuel Coley and Joshua Innes placed 2nd. We also had a team of 8 entered into the Championship relay 12 km race. Each runner ran either 1 or 2 laps of 1km each, totalling 12 km. These runners were so supportive and encouraging of each other. They competed hard and finished with a 3rd place medal. Well done to Mackenzie Bryant, Asha James, Alana Eru, Sean Collins, Adisen Mahy, Harry Anderson, Joshua Innes and Macka Wagstaff. We also awarded a fairplay medal to Macka Wagstaff for his support and encouragement of all members of the team and for his kind words of support which was shared with me by another member of his team. Well done Macka! TABLE TENNIS All team members represented the school well, as well as improving their skills as more games were played.
