We are hoping for smooth sailing this year with minimal covid-19 disruptions! Whether you are new or returning, we look forward to working alongside you and are very committed to encouraging and promoting lifelong learning and involvement in competitive or social sport and physical activity for all. We know that success in sport is a result of the effort and commitment from students, coaches and from parents, whanau and volunteers. We are fortunate to have staff members who are experienced in teaching, coaching and competing in a range of sporting codes and are therefore very well-equipped to mentor students towards meeting their personal bests. However, with such large participation numbers we simply do not have enough staff to cover all teams and events. Therefore we value the help and support from our parent and whanau community who enable us to help provide the best possible support to our students. I have no doubt that 2021 will be yet another enjoyable and successful year for all involved. Warm Regards, Nicola Kaiwai Director of Sport 3 A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL Through our very nature, Albany Junior High School is recognised as having both the expertise and the experience of leading high quality learning for adolescents. As such, we are always mindful of the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of learners in this age group, whilst constantly trying to offer as many opportu- nities as we can (our motto of ‘School of Opportunities’ came from parents, not ourselves). Sport plays a vital role in our ability to do this and we enjoy high participation rates, with well over 70% of students being involved in organised school sport. We aim to provide sporting opportunities in most codes for every learner and at every level of competition, from top-level com- petitive sports—where we chive exceptionally well—to starter teams for the novice. Like other schools, we cater for traditional sports but, differently to others, we also look to provide the wid- est variety of activities possible, from zone days to team competi- tions and from rugby to diving. We are always looking to provide new and different opportuni- ties on top of an already full programme and are regular attendees at the NZ AIMS Games and many other national com- petitions. We are a competitive force in sports and we are very proud of our achievements, with students competing at local, regional, national and international levels (our Gym wall is filled with photos of students who have represented NZ). We expect our learners to maintain the highest standards of dis- cipline and sportsmanship, both on and off the field, whilst they strive to fulfil their potential. They are encouraged and supported to ensure that they are able to meet their commitments to their coaches, managers and teammates, demonstrating drive through turning up regularly to practices, pushing themselves to their Pagepeak, 4 and giving their all in games. 4 Our vision for sport requires a substantial commitment from a huge number of volunteers, including staff, parents and students and I would take this opportunity to thank all those involved in AJHS sport who make this the success that it undoubtedly is, with a special thanks to Jo Monkton, our excellent sports coordinator, and Nicola Kaiwai our Director of Sport. We want our students to be involved, active, and enjoy their sport throughout their lives. We will provide support if you bring the drive! Regards, Stephen Kendall-Jones, Principal. 5 REGISTRATION PROCESS This Sports Information booklet is provided to help you choose what sports you would like to play during the year. While every effort has gone in to ensure details are correct, some sports in- formation is not available and events do change. Please remember the following when choosing a sport: You must be able to attend at least one training per week and every game for each sport that you sign up to. For all regular season competitions, it is yours and your parent/caregivers responsibility to ensure that you are at practice and also that you can get to the games. It is also important to remember that once you commit to a sport that you must see it through until the end of the sea- son. There will be NO refunds for withdrawals after teams have been selected unless an approved medical certificate has been provided. Sports Fees: We ask that all sports fees are settled in full by the registration date as detailed for each sport but do understand that this is not always possible. A payment plan option maybe available to assist families where necessary. To enquire about this option please contact Jo Monkton [email protected] Compulsory Sports Administration Fee: Each year every student who registers for a regular sport will be requested to pay a one off Sports Administration Fee of $25.00. This fee helps to cover administration, Sports Coordinators costs, equipment, repairs, maintenance, sports prizegiving etc) 6 Sports Registration Process: All enrolments for sports are to be completed via the online doc- uments. Information and Registration forms are available on the AJHS website under Sports https://www.ajhs.school.nz/ Parents/caregivers need to click on the appropriate link and read the information before completing and submitting the form by the due date. Students will not be placed in teams if the registration fee has not been paid or a satisfactory payment plan set up.
