Harries2, Nick Poulos2, Job Fransen1,3, and Aaron J. Coutts1,3 1University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Sport & Exercise Discipline Group, Faculty of Health, Australia 2Australian Rugby Sevens, Australian Rugby Union (ARU), Sydney, Australia 3University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Human Performance Research Centre, Australia Review UDC: 796.333.3: 796.012.1 Abstract: The purpose of this review is to summarize the research that has examined the match demands of elite-level, men’s rugby sevens, and provide enhanced understanding of the elements contributing to successful physical and technical performance. Forty-one studies were sourced from the electronic database of PubMed, Google Scholar and SPORTDiscus. From these, twelve original investigations were included in this review. Positive match outcomes are the result of an interplay of successful physical, technical, and tactical performances. The physical performance of players (activity profile measurement from GPS) includes high relative total distance and high-speed distance values in comparison to other team sports. The technical performance of players (skill involvement measurement from match statistics) involves the execution of a range of specific offensive and defensive skills to score points or prevent the opponent from scoring. The factors influencing change in these performance constructs has not been investigated in rugby sevens. There is a paucity in the literature surrounding the situational and individual factors affecting physical and skill performance in elite rugby sevens competition. Future studies should investigate the factors likely to have the strongest influence on player performance in rugby sevens.

  • Rugby Sevens
DISCOVER YOUR GOLD: RUGBY SEVENS What is Rugby Sevens? Rugby Sevens is played under similar laws to rugby union and is played on a full size pitch by teams of seven players rather than fifteen. The game is shorter in duration, with each half lasting seven minutes during the pool stages of a tournament, and increasing to ten for the final. Because Rugby Sevens is played on a full size pitch, players need to be able to cover a lot of ground during a match. This means that participants need to be incredibly fit and have plenty of speed, skill and stamina. The basics of Rugby - running, passing, tackling and decision-making - are key components of Rugby Sevens, as are creating space and keeping possession of the ball. Rugby Sevens made its eagerly awaited debut in the Summer Olympics in Rio 2016 with the GB Women’s team finishing fourth and the GB Men’s team winning a silver medal. Who are we looking for? Perhaps you are a sprinter or play another team sport such as netball, basketball or volleyball – Rugby Sevens suits athletes who are quick, have good hand-eye coordination and enjoy being part of a team. • Fair Play the Story of Rugby at the Olympics the Rugby and Olympic Values
Fair Play The Story of Rugby at the Olympics The Rugby and Olympic values Which Rugby and Olympic values are the same or similar? Is Rugby a good fit with the Olympics? Did you know Rugby has been at five Olympics? Rugby at the 1900 Olympics in Paris Three teams competed in the Rugby tournament. A French representative team defeated a team from the German city of Frankfurt and Moseley Wanderers from England. The Moseley team had played a full game of Rugby in England the day before they made the journey to Paris. They arrived in the morning, played the match in the afternoon and were back in their home country by the next morning. The proposed game between the British and German sides was cancelled and both are credited as silver medalists. The Franco-Haitian centre Constantin Henriquez de Zubiera became the first black gold medalist. Three months earlier he had competed in the tug of war. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1900_Summer_Olympics Rugby at the 1908 Olympics in London The host Great Britain was represented by Cornwall, the 1908 county champion. Defending Olympic champions France withdrew, leaving Australasia, represented by the Australia national Rugby union team as the only other remaining entrant. The interest in the Olympic Rugby final was only lukewarm with the final being held in the last week of Games that had taken place over six months. In 1908 Twickenham Stadium was still being built. The match was played at the White City Stadium, London, on an area alongside the Olympic Games swimming pool which measured 110 yards in length with a long line of netting stretched beside to catch flying balls.

  • RUGBY SEVENS RULES (Year 5 & 6 Division)
RUGBY SEVENS RULES (Year 5 & 6 Division) The Rules of Rugby sevens are much the same of those used in the fifteen man rugby union version of the game. The game is regulated by the same authority, the International Rugby Board (IRB), therefore the rules of rugby sevens are very similar and most teams use players that also play the full fifteen aside game. There are some major differences in the rugby sevens rule book though, which have a dramatic effect upon the game. Field size: ½ Field Footwear: Bare feet only Gender: Mixed Gender teams allowed Mouthguards: Compulsory • The game is played by 7 players on each side. Hence the name sevens. The team consists of three forwards and four backs • Games take place between two teams for a total of 7 minutes each way, with a 1minute half time break. • In the case of there being a draw at the end of a playoff game sudden death extra time is played, whereby one 5 minute half will be played until one of the teams scores (Try). If it is still a draw at the end of 5 mins the team who scored first in the game is then considered the winner of the game. • The scoring system is the same as the 15 a side game, 5 points for a try, (there are no penalties or conversions in the 5 & 6 division) KICK OFFS • Unlike 15 a side rugby the scoring team kicks off to the opposition, rather than the team that was scored against, allowing teams to get hold of the ball after they have conceded.
