We study the spectral properties in the range 3600 A–6800˚ A˚ of the nuclear region of galaxies behind the Magellanic Clouds. The radial velocities clarified the nature of the objects as background galaxies or extended objects belonging to the Clouds. For most galaxies behind the main bodies of the LMC and SMC, radial velocities were measured for the first time. In the present sample typical LMC background galaxies are nearby (4000 <V(km s−1) < 6000), while SMC’s are considerably more distant (10 000 <V(km s−1) < 20 000). We determine the reddening in each line of sight by matching a reddening-free galaxy template with comparable stellar population. For the LMC main body we derive a combined Milky Way and internal reddening value E(B−V )MW+i =0.120.10, while for the SMC E(B−V )MW+i =0.050.05. -

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) provide the unique opportunity to study young and populous star clusters. Some of them are elliptical in shape, or are members of a multiple systems, which are almost absent in the Milky Way. We have selected a sample of Magellanic Clouds’ star clusters, some of them candidates of a multiple system components, to investigate them by means of their number density profiles. This approach allows us to determine the radial distribution of the stars of different magnitude. Since the brighter stars have larger masses than the fainter stars, the profiles can be used to trace mass-segregation in the clusters. We have fitted a theoretical model by Elson, Fall & Freeman [1987] to determine the core radius and the concentration of the stars for each magnitude range. We investigate variability and we model the pulsational behaviour of AGB variables in the intermediate-age LMC cluster NGC 1846. Methods. Our own photometric monitoring has been combined with data from the MACHO archive to detect 22 variables among the cluster’s AGB stars and to derive pulsation periods. According to the global parameters of the cluster we construct pulsation models taking into account the effect of the C/O ratio on the atmospheric structure. In particular, we have used opacities appropriate for both O-rich stars and carbon stars in the pulsation calculations. Results. The observed P-L-diagram of NGC 1846 can be fitted using a mass of the AGB stars of about 1.8 M. We show that the period of pulsation is increased when an AGB star turns into a carbon star. Using the mass on the AGB defined by the pulsational behaviour of our sample we derive a cluster age of 1.4 × 109 years. This is the first time the age of a cluster has been derived from the variability of its AGB stars. -

Certain aspects of the AGB population, such as the relative number of M and N stars, the mass loss rates, and the initial masses of carbon- oxygen cores, depend on the initial heavy element abundance Z. I have calculated synthetic populations of AGB stars for different initial Z values taking into consideration the evolution of single and close binary stars. I present the results of population syntheses of AGB stars in clusters as a function of different initial chemical compositions. The relation for the tip luminosity of AGB stars versus cluster age as a function of Z is presented and is used to determine the ages for a number of clusters in the LMC and the SMC, including clusters with no previous age determinations. Population simulations show that for low heavy element abundance (Z = 0.001) few M stars are formed with respect to the number of carbon stars. However, the total number of all AGB stars in clusters is not affected by the initial chemical composition. As a result of the evolution of close binary components after the mass exchange, an increase in the range of limiting values of the thermal pulsing AGB star luminosities is expected. The difference between the maximum luminosity on the AGB of single star and the luminosity of a star after a mass exchange event in a close binary system may be as great as 1 magnitude for very young clusters. -

Caputo1⋆, Nathan de Vries1 and Simon Portegies Zwart1 1Leiden Observatory, Leiden University, PO Box 9513, 2300 RA Leiden, the Netherlands 24 October 2018 ABSTRACT We investigate the effect of different initial virial temperatures, Q, on the dynamics of star clusters. We find that the virial temperature has a strong effect on many aspects of the resulting system, including among others: the fraction of bodies escaping from the system, the depth of the collapse of the system, and the strength of the mass segregation. These differences deem the practice of using “cold” initial conditions no longer a simple choice of convenience. The choice of initial virial temperature must be carefully considered as its impact on the remainder of the simulation can be profound. We discuss the pitfalls and aim to describe the general behavior of the collapse and the resultant system as a function of the virial temperature so that a well reasoned choice of initial virial temperature can be made. We make a correction to the previous theoretical estimate for the minimum radius, Rmin, of the cluster at the deepest (−1/3) moment of collapse to include a Q dependency, Rmin ≈ Q+N , where N is the number of particles. We use our numericalresults to infer more aboutthe initial conditions of the young cluster R136. Based on our analysis, we find that R136 was likely formed with a rather cool, but not cold, initial virial temperature (Q ≈ 0.13). -

Harris* David Dunlap Observatory, Richmond Hill, Ontario Received 1974 September 16; revised 1975 June 18 ABSTRACT Radial-velocity observations and MK classifications have been used to study evolved stars in 25 open clusters. Published data on stars in 72 additional clusters are rediscussed and com- bined with the observations friade in this investigation to yield positions in the Hertzsprung- Russell diagram for 559 evolved stars in 97 clusters. Ages for the parent clusters were estimated from the main-sequence turnoff points, earliest spectral types, and bluest stars in the clusters themselves. The evolved stars were sorted into six age groups ranging from 4 x 106 yr to 4 x 108 yr, and the composite H-R diagram for each age group was then used to study the evolutionary tracks for stars of various masses. The observational results were found to be in reasonably good agreement with recent theoretical computations. The composite color-magnitude diagrams were found to be strikingly different from those of the rich open clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. At a given age the red giants in the Small Magellanic Cloud and the Large Magellanic Cloud clusters are brighter and bluer than their galactic counterparts. It is suggested that these effects may be accounted for by differences in metal abundance.
