The penitential season of Lent is the period of forty weekdays beginning on Ash Wednesday. It is a season of the church year that commemorates the forty days that Jesus fasted and prayed in the wilderness, before He began His public ministry of preaching and repentance. So we as Christians, through the centuries, must try to follow and imitate Jesus' footsteps in the wilderness. No one is greater than the Master and this time of selfdenial, fasting, prayer and penance can be quite difficult. The word "Lent" comes from the AngloSaxon word "Lencten" which meant spring. So it is a perfect opportunity for us to do some early spring cleaning within ourselves; tidying our souls up so to speak.

Drink, sweets and cursing are just a few things people give up for Lent and it is always interesting to know what other people are giving up. Ask your family and friends what they give up or offer for Lent. But most of all in a spirit of prayer and supplication ask God what he may choose for you personally to give up. It might be he wants you to visit a friend or someone who is lonely or sick and encourage them with the love of Christ. It could be a bad habit we need to change; something we feel is not good. It could be that the money we save from selfdenial could be given to a local charity or someone in need. Maybe give someone a compliment or perhaps visit your church during Lent. You could define Lent as "The spiritual tithing of the year" as Lent’s forty days represents about a tenth of the year (Ordinary tithing meant to give a tenth part – or ‘a tithe’ of one's goods to God). Of course we all need to change in different ways to become more perfect. When we come to that wonderful Easter day, we can share in the joy of the Risen Christ.

Lord, lead us to repentance that we may pass from death to eternal life. God in your mercy come to us, forgive us our sins and heal our spirits.

God Bless

Fr Alex Makulski
