  • Aquiles Priester – Those Who Appreciate My Work Expect Some Kind of Didactic Material to Be Released from Time to Time
    1. In your busy life as a musician you've found time to realize methods and DVDs. What prompted you to dedicate time to their achievement? Aquiles Priester – Those who appreciate my work expect some kind of didactic material to be released from time to time. I’m in no hurry to do many things so as to have a vast catalogue. My greatest concern is to maintain a high level of quality in everything I do. Come to think of it, free time is something that doesn’t exist, but if you want to go ahead in your care er, you have to make time to realize the things that are important and at the right time. 2. Your last instructional DVD (The Infallible Reason Of My Freak Drumming), is very practical with regard to the division of chapters. Did you choose this subdivision by yourself? Aquiles – Yes, I produced the DVD myself and it was based on things that I always studied. Everything I learned with Kiko Freitas at the time when I studied with him is included in the DVD. This goes beyond the exercises themselves because I’m talking about the conception of the work. Many people comment that the way in which the DVD is presented is very good and that makes me very happy. This DVD was released worldwide by Mel Bay Publishing and in 2011 was considered 3rd best instructional DVD of the year according to readers of Modern Drummer magazine . 3. How long did it take to complete it? Aquiles – I did a long pre-production, almost 15 days recording and rehearsing the whole script during 8 hours daily alone on a farm.

  • Practised Bravado - Theo Van Niel Jr
Practised Bravado - Theo van Niel Jr. Independent artist| Release date: 28-04-2017 Practised Bravado is the debut solo album release by guitarist Theo van Niel Jr.. The record features 6 new tracks of original guitar driven instrumental music with collaborations with world class drummers Thomas Lang (Paul Gilbert) and Dennis Leeflang (Bumblefoot). The music on Practised Bravado encompasses a broad spectrum of different musical styles such as rock, country, metal, jazz and funk, showcasing the seemly limitless versatility of Theo's playing and songwriting. A great album for the guitar and drum freaks.! While making a name for himself as the blues rock guitar player of the much praised band Mojo Man, Theo Jr. silently worked on a side-project, what soon became Practised Bravado. During the writing and recording process, Theo took the opportunity to seek out for drummers to contribute to the album. Notably, the album features performances from Los Angeles based drummer Thomas Lang, known for his reputation as the 'drummers drummer' as well as his work with artists such as Paul Gilbert, John Wetton, Robert Fripp and many others. Practised Bravado also includes the collaboration of Los Angeles based drummer Dennis Leeflang (Bumblefoot, Lita Ford) and Dutch drum virtuoso Davy Andy Henket. By maintaining a tasteful mix between the virtuoso guitar and drum madness and the well thought compositions ,Theo Jr. delivers a diverse and fresh album, proving that he can measure himself with the big guys! ''I really enjoyed the content. Great feel and spot on guitar tones… Very Enjoyable.'' - Blues Saraceno ''It was a lot of fun to play on these songs, I really liked Theo's playing and the vibe of the songs.

MARKY DAWSON MARKY DAWSON VOX AND KEYS Pop, Rock’n’Roll, Blues Rox Management Ltd MARKY DAWSON Marky Dawson was born and raised in Broadstone, Dorset. Growing up surrounded by his dad’s impressive record collection it was almost inevitable that he would develop a love for music. And so he grew up with influences such as Ray Charles, Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel, Queen and Elton John, to name but a few. He started playing piano at age 14 and pretty soon started writing his own songs. He moved to London to get ‘spotted’ and he did get spotted, by his manager and publisher Adrian Rox. (Adrian also discovered Michael McIntyre during his days in the comedy business). Playing over 100 gigs in 2015 alone Marky has been serving his ‘apprenticeship’ doing solo gigs mainly in London and on the South Coast, but even as far afield as Austria (photo below at k.u.k in Bad Ischl). Rox Management Ltd A CD was released last autumn of piano/vocal songs called ‘First Takes’. The piano was recorded at Derek Nash’s studio (Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra) and vocals and production done by Mike Peters (B*witched, Liberty X). It includes a seminal unplugged version of Queen’s ‘Radio Gaga’, along with 5 of Marky’s impressive originals. Over the last year Marky has guested with Ben Waters, Daniel Smith, John O’Leary/Alan Glen and supported Never The Bride on many occasions and also Ben Montague. Nikki Lambourn (NTB’s vocalist, photo left) is now also Marky’s vocal coach (she coaches the likes of Beverley Knight, Newton Faulkner).

A study of kit drummers' identities, practices and learning Gareth Dylan Smith Institute of Education, University of London Submitted for PhD 1 ABSTRACT Drummers have largely been neglected in scholarly literature on music and education, despite being active in large numbers in popular music and having an increasing presence in the music education arena. The study explores the identities, practices and learning of kit drummers in the UK from an emic perspective, using a mixed methodological approach with a focus on qualitative sociological enquiry drawing on interpretative phenomenological analysis and grounded theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 teenage drummers and 12 adult drummers; both age groups were interviewed to allow for consideration of whether adults' reflections on their formative years differ greatly from those of teenage drummers today. Secondary data were gathered from a brief questionnaire conducted with 100 more drummers to support and contextualize the richer interview data. Data were also taken from relevant biographies, audio/visual media and journalistic sources.

  • Drummer Thomas Lang
