Drummer Thomas Lang Dresdner Drum & Bass Festival 2012 – Drummer Thomas Lang (Österreich) Er spielte mit Falco, den Sugababes, Gianna Nannini und vielen mehr. Und trotzdem ist Thomas Lang eher nur in Schlagzeugerkreisen bekannt, gilt dort aber als gottähnliche Kreatur. Spieltechnik, Showmanship, Kreativität – alles top. Und Drumsticks, so dick wie Zaunpfähle. Ein Drummer, wie er im Buche steht. Es heißt, dass Thomas Lang im Alter von vier Jahren die Stöcke erstmals in die Hand genommen und nur selten wieder weggelegt hat. Heute gehört er zu einem von sieben Schlagzeugern, die 2010 von der Band Dream Theater zum Vorspielen geladen wurden, um einen Nachfolger für Mike Portnoy zu finden. Auszeichnungen, wie Best Drummer, Best DVD und Best Clinician hat er dutzendweise eingesammelt. Sein Drumming-Boot-Camp gilt eine der härtesten Trainingseinheiten für Schlagzeuger. Wir danken der Firma Roland ganz ausdrücklich, dass sie Langs Workshop in Dresden ermöglicht haben. Will Calhoun (USA) Will Calhoun absolvierte das ‹Berklee College of Music› nicht nur mit Auszeichnung, sondern auch mit dem Buddy-Rich-Jazz-Masters-Award. Kurze Zeit später schloss er sich mit Gitarrist Vernon Reid und seiner Band Living Colour zusammen. Als eines der ersten Crossover-Projekte überhaupt eroberten sie die Musikwelt im Sturm. Ein Platin-Album, zweimal Grammy und zahlreiche Top-Ten-Platzierungen zeugen von ruhmreichen Zeiten. Alles in allem ist Will Calhoun bis heute eine treibende und kreative Kraft als Drummer geblieben. Er überzeugt gestandene Jazz-Spezialisten mit Feingefühl, mit Swing und Ideenwitz. Er spielt Heavy Rock so kraftvoll und pfundig, dass selbst Metal-Fans staunen. Im nächsten Moment kommen elektronische Wave- und Mandala Drums zum Einsatz. Diese Flexibilität brachte ihm Tourneen u.a. mit Wayne Shorter, Marcus Miller, Dr. John, Mick Jagger, B.B. King, Run-DMC und Public Enemy ein. Benny Greb (D) Benny Grebs preisgekrönte DVD ‹The Language of Drumming› ist im Education-Bereich die zur Zeit meist verkaufte DVD weltweit und erschien 2009 auf dem Label von Hudson Music/NY, welches legendäre DVDs mit Jaco Pastorius, John Scofield, Dennis Chambers und Chick Corea veröffentlichte. Greb ist voller Musikalität und Finesse. Er definiert durch seinen Stil das heutige moderne Drumming. Im Laufe der letzten Jahre hat Greb zu Recht Weltklassestatus und Anerkennung erreicht. Er hat bei hochkarätigen Veranstaltungen wie dem Modern Drummer Festival in den USA, Montreal Drum Festival in Kanada, Ultimate Drummers Weekend Australien, dem World Drum Festival, dem Meinl Drumfestival und Drummer Live at Wembley Arena London Workshops durchgeführt und wurde bereits zweimal vom Percussive Arts Society Convention in die USA eingeladen. Dirk Verbeuren (Belgien) Verbeuren begann sich bereits in der Grundschule mit Musik zu beschäftigen, er spielte sieben Jahre lang Violine. Seine Familie zog 1988 nach Paris, wo er Piano und E-Gitarre studierte. 1991 entdeckte er seine Begabung als Schlagzeuger und begann mit anderen Musikern zu spielen. 1993 zog er nach Nancy um Schlagzeug an der Music Academy International (MAI) zu lernen. Im Oktober des gleichen Jahres gründete er zusammen mit dem Gitarristen Patrick Martin die Thrash-Metal-Band Scarve. Außerdem wurde er Schlagzeug-Lehrer an der MAI. Zeitweise war er als Session-Drummer für verschiedene Metal-Bands wie Soilwork, Sybreed oder Lyzanxia tätig. Mittlerweile ist er fester Schlagzeuger von Soilwork, Aborted, Scarve und One Way Mirror. Ralf Gustke (D) Geprägt von seinen Anfängen als Sideman von Wolf Maahn und Gianna Nannini gewann Gustke international so an Bedeutung, dass Yamaha ihm ein eigenes Modell, die Ralf Gustke Signature Snare widmete. 1987 erhielt er seinen ersten Profi-Job und tourte mit Lydie Auvrey. Dem folgten zahllose Experimente wie die Band ‹Komatzu Baumaschinen GmbH› oder das Abenteuer Neue Deutsche Welle. Heute kann Gustke auf eine lange Liste von renommierten Bands und Projekten verweisen und ist einer der gefragtesten Studio- und Liveschlagzeuger in Deutschland. Chaka Khan, Schiller, Tom Liwa, Joe Sciacca und Nena sind hier nur Einige. Als rhythmisches Rückgrat in der German Black Music Scene (Xavier Naidoo, Söhne Mannheims, Sabrina Setlur ...) hat Ralf Gustke wohl die größte Bekanntheit erlangt. Unverwechselbares Markenzeichen sind seine verwobenen Hi-Hat und Cymbal-Grooves. Rick Latham (USA) Von vielen als ‹Guru des Linear Drumming› bezeichnet, gelang Rick Latham mit seinem Buch ‹Advanced Funk Studies› so etwas wie die Bibel der Schlagzeugliteratur. Zusammen mit dem Werk ‹Contemporary Drumset Techniques› prägte er das moderne Schlagzeugspiel entscheidend mit. Rick arbeitet(e) sowohl im Studio als auch auf Tour mit den ganz Großen des Musikgeschäfts zusammen, darunter Künstler wie Blues Legende B. B. King, Quincy Jones, Edgar Winter und Pat Travers. Ricks mitreißende Workshops sind weltweit hoch angesehen. Auch seine jüngste Veröffentlichung ‹All About The Groove› ist ein Bestseller. Seine Teilnahme am Festival wurde uns wenige Minuten vor Fertigstellung dieser Broschüre bestätigt. Wer Rick Latham am Bass begleiten wird, steht noch nicht fest. Tito Pascoal (USA) Tito Pascoal, Jahrgang 1994, ist mit seinen jungen Jahren bereits ein äußerst vielseitiger Drummer. Sein Debütalbum ‹Walk The Walk› (Tito war 12!!!) schmückt sich bereits mit Namen wie Bob Mintzer, Tom Kennedy und Dave Weckl. Auf seinem neuesten Werk ‹Tim & Tito Pascoal – The Sun Stood Still› wird er neben seinem Vater am Klavier auch von Richard Bona am Bass begleitet. Seine Musik bewegt sich im Grenzbereich von Jazz und Funk. Seine Zuschauer staunen nicht selten, wenn sie merken, dass sich hinter der musikalischen Finesse und rhythmischen Präzision ein Teenager verbirgt. Werner Schmitt (D) In Kennerkreisen zählt Werner Schmitt zu den technisch versiertesten Schlagzeugern Deutschlands und kann mit beeindruckenden Credits aufwarten. Unzählbare Tourneen und Liveauftritte sowie hunderte Studioaufnahmen spiegeln seine großartige Karriere wider. In seinen Workshops macht Werner die Trickkiste auf und zeigt, worauf es beim spielen ankommt. Besonders Interessant für uns ist seine Big- Band-Erfahrung. Wir haben ihn gebeten, seinen Workshopschwerpunkt diesem Thema zu widmen. Gergo Borlai (Ungarn) Gergo Borlai nennt Künstler und Bands wie Weather Report, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, John Scofield and John McLaughlin als größte musikalische Einflüsse. Das lässt bereits vermuten, dass nicht gerade die aufgeräumten und übersichtlichen Patterns sein Steckenpferd sind. Nein, hier ist ein mit allen Wassern gewaschener Fusion-Drummer am Werk. Nach gemeinsamer Sache mit Genre-Pionieren wie Scott Kinsey, Scott Henderson und Matthew Garrison wurde er nun vom Top-Bassisten Gary Willis für gemeinsame Projekte auserkoren – siehe Seite 16. Heiko Jung & Tom Götze (Dresden) Die beiden Musiker verbindet eine lange und abwechslungsreiche Zusammenarbeit. Vor Jahren spielten sie mit Christian Röver im Trio, heute hat Tom Götze seine eigene Band, natürlich mit Heiko Jung on drums. Der Begriff Rhythmusgruppe scheint bei den Beiden etwas fehl am Platz. Sound und Stil sind jeweils so markant, die Wechsel von Rhythmus- zur Melodieführung so fließend, dass sich Heiko Jung und Tom Götze in ihren musikalischen Projekten niemals ‹nur› auf die Funktionen einer Rhythmusgruppe reduzieren lassen. Mit Code MD hat Tom Götze dies beim 4. Dresdner Drumfestival unter Beweis gestellt. Selbst Poogie Bell war nach der kurzen Session sehr begeistert von Toms Bassspiel. Heiko Jung war bei der Geburtsstunde des Festivals mit dabei. Gemeinsam werden sie zeigen, wie dehnbar der Begriff Rhythmusgruppe ist. Jan Pfennig & Stefan Fuhr (Berlin) Hier haben wir zwei junge Musiker im Programm, deren Namen noch nicht in aller Munde sind. Die Betonung liegt klar auf dem NOCH, denn Jan Pfennig und Stefan Fuhr sind so etwas wie das deutsche Hip- Hop-Dreamteam unter den Rhythmusgruppen. Rapper Sido hat sie vor Jahren schon in den Live-Kader berufen. Mit ihrer eigenen Band The Swag (siehe Seite 15) mischen sie wöchentlich die Hauptstadt auf. Pfennig hat sich mit Human Sampler schon mehrfach in die Herzen der Dresdner Drum›n Bass Gemeinde getrommelt. Seine Band Rotfront spielt auf der Fusion und dem Sziget Festival. Stefan Fuhr produziert, komponiert, arrangiert und zupft nebenher die dicken Saiten für Reggae-Master Nosliw. Höhepunkt seiner Karriere dürfte jedoch die MTV-Unplugged-Aufzeichnung mit Sido sein. .

Aquiles Priester – Those who appreciate my work expect some kind of didactic material to be released from time to time. I’m in no hurry to do many things so as to have a vast catalogue. My greatest concern is to maintain a high level of quality in everything I do. Come to think of it, free time is something that doesn’t exist, but if you want to go ahead in your care er, you have to make time to realize the things that are important and at the right time. 2. Your last instructional DVD (The Infallible Reason Of My Freak Drumming), is very practical with regard to the division of chapters. Did you choose this subdivision by yourself? Aquiles – Yes, I produced the DVD myself and it was based on things that I always studied. Everything I learned with Kiko Freitas at the time when I studied with him is included in the DVD. This goes beyond the exercises themselves because I’m talking about the conception of the work. Many people comment that the way in which the DVD is presented is very good and that makes me very happy. This DVD was released worldwide by Mel Bay Publishing and in 2011 was considered 3rd best instructional DVD of the year according to readers of Modern Drummer magazine . 3. How long did it take to complete it? Aquiles – I did a long pre-production, almost 15 days recording and rehearsing the whole script during 8 hours daily alone on a farm.

    MARKY DAWSON MARKY DAWSON VOX AND KEYS Pop, Rock’n’Roll, Blues Rox Management Ltd MARKY DAWSON Marky Dawson was born and raised in Broadstone, Dorset. Growing up surrounded by his dad’s impressive record collection it was almost inevitable that he would develop a love for music. And so he grew up with influences such as Ray Charles, Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel, Queen and Elton John, to name but a few. He started playing piano at age 14 and pretty soon started writing his own songs. He moved to London to get ‘spotted’ and he did get spotted, by his manager and publisher Adrian Rox. (Adrian also discovered Michael McIntyre during his days in the comedy business). Playing over 100 gigs in 2015 alone Marky has been serving his ‘apprenticeship’ doing solo gigs mainly in London and on the South Coast, but even as far afield as Austria (photo below at k.u.k in Bad Ischl). Rox Management Ltd A CD was released last autumn of piano/vocal songs called ‘First Takes’. The piano was recorded at Derek Nash’s studio (Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra) and vocals and production done by Mike Peters (B*witched, Liberty X). It includes a seminal unplugged version of Queen’s ‘Radio Gaga’, along with 5 of Marky’s impressive originals. Over the last year Marky has guested with Ben Waters, Daniel Smith, John O’Leary/Alan Glen and supported Never The Bride on many occasions and also Ben Montague. A study of kit drummers' identities, practices and learning Gareth Dylan Smith Institute of Education, University of London Submitted for PhD 1 ABSTRACT Drummers have largely been neglected in scholarly literature on music and education, despite being active in large numbers in popular music and having an increasing presence in the music education arena. The study explores the identities, practices and learning of kit drummers in the UK from an emic perspective, using a mixed methodological approach with a focus on qualitative sociological enquiry drawing on interpretative phenomenological analysis and grounded theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 teenage drummers and 12 adult drummers; both age groups were interviewed to allow for consideration of whether adults' reflections on their formative years differ greatly from those of teenage drummers today.
