There is no one ideal microphone to use on any particular instrument. There is also no one ideal way to place a microphone. Place the microphone to get the sound you want. However, the desired sound can often be achieved more quickly and consistently by understanding basic microphone characteristics, sound-radiation properties of musical instruments, and acoustic fundamentals. Here are some suggestions to follow when miking musical instruments for sound reinforcement. • Try to get the sound source (instrument, voice, or amplifier) to sound good acoustically (“live”) before miking it. • Use a microphone with a frequency response that is limited to the frequency range of the instrument, if possible, or filter out frequencies below the lowest fundamental frequency of the instrument. • To determine a good starting microphone position, try closing one ear with your finger. Listen to the sound source with the other ear and move around until you find a spot that sounds good. Put the microphone there. -

Schmalenberger ABSTRACT Stylistic Evolution of Jazz Drummer Ed Blackwell: The Cultural Intersection of New Orleans and West Africa David J. Schmalenberger The two primary functions of a jazz drummer are to maintain a consistent pulse and to support the soloists within the musical group. Throughout the twentieth century, jazz drummers have found creative ways to fulfill or challenge these roles. In the case of Bebop, for example, pioneers Kenny Clarke and Max Roach forged a new drumming style in the 1940’s that was markedly more independent technically, as well as more lyrical in both time-keeping and soloing. The stylistic innovations of Clarke and Roach also helped foster a new attitude: the acceptance of drummers as thoughtful, sensitive musical artists. These developments paved the way for the next generation of jazz drummers, one that would further challenge conventional musical roles in the post-Hard Bop era. One of Max Roach’s most faithful disciples was the New Orleans-born drummer Edward Joseph “Boogie” Blackwell (1929-1992). Ed Blackwell’s playing style at the beginning of his career in the late 1940’s was predominantly influenced by Bebop and the drumming vocabulary of Max Roach. -

1. In your busy life as a musician you've found time to realize methods and DVDs. What prompted you to dedicate time to their achievement? Aquiles Priester – Those who appreciate my work expect some kind of didactic material to be released from time to time. I’m in no hurry to do many things so as to have a vast catalogue. My greatest concern is to maintain a high level of quality in everything I do. Come to think of it, free time is something that doesn’t exist, but if you want to go ahead in your care er, you have to make time to realize the things that are important and at the right time. 2. Your last instructional DVD (The Infallible Reason Of My Freak Drumming), is very practical with regard to the division of chapters. Did you choose this subdivision by yourself? Aquiles – Yes, I produced the DVD myself and it was based on things that I always studied. Everything I learned with Kiko Freitas at the time when I studied with him is included in the DVD. This goes beyond the exercises themselves because I’m talking about the conception of the work. Many people comment that the way in which the DVD is presented is very good and that makes me very happy. This DVD was released worldwide by Mel Bay Publishing and in 2011 was considered 3rd best instructional DVD of the year according to readers of Modern Drummer magazine . 3. How long did it take to complete it? Aquiles – I did a long pre-production, almost 15 days recording and rehearsing the whole script during 8 hours daily alone on a farm. -

Aquiles Priester has already done more than 350 drum clinics in various countries and took part of the biggest drum festivals around the world such as Modern Drummer Festival (United States), Montreal Drum Fest (Canada), Batuka! You will learn about the elements that go into making drums and cymbals, and what to consider when shopping for drums. Before choosing a drum set, you need to be familiar with the components that go into it, these include: The Snare Drum, the Bass Drum, one or more Mounted Toms and a Floor Tom. The two other essential components that complete a full drum set, Cymbals and Hardware. We have also included a section on how to reduce acoustic drum volume, a microphone alternative, and a section on electronic drums. Parts of the Drum Set ANATOMY OF A DRUM TOP (BATTER) HEAD: The most basic component of a drum, the head is a round membrane made of a synthetic material usually mylar, that is stretched across the shell, with varying degrees of tension. HOOP: The drum hoop is usually made of either cast or stamped metal, although some drummers prefer wood hoops. Hoops are constructed with a flange shaped to hold the head on the shell for tensioning. TENSION ROD: These mount through holes in the hoop and thread into the lug to maintain the desired tension.
