MARKY DAWSON MARKY DAWSON VOX AND KEYS Pop, Rock’n’Roll, Blues Rox Management Ltd MARKY DAWSON Marky Dawson was born and raised in Broadstone, Dorset. Growing up surrounded by his dad’s impressive record collection it was almost inevitable that he would develop a love for music. And so he grew up with influences such as Ray Charles, Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel, Queen and Elton John, to name but a few. He started playing piano at age 14 and pretty soon started writing his own songs. He moved to London to get ‘spotted’ and he did get spotted, by his manager and publisher Adrian Rox. (Adrian also discovered Michael McIntyre during his days in the comedy business). Playing over 100 gigs in 2015 alone Marky has been serving his ‘apprenticeship’ doing solo gigs mainly in London and on the South Coast, but even as far afield as Austria (photo below at k.u.k in Bad Ischl). Rox Management Ltd A CD was released last autumn of piano/vocal songs called ‘First Takes’. The piano was recorded at Derek Nash’s studio (Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra) and vocals and production done by Mike Peters (B*witched, Liberty X). It includes a seminal unplugged version of Queen’s ‘Radio Gaga’, along with 5 of Marky’s impressive originals. Over the last year Marky has guested with Ben Waters, Daniel Smith, John O’Leary/Alan Glen and supported Never The Bride on many occasions and also Ben Montague. Nikki Lambourn (NTB’s vocalist, photo left) is now also Marky’s vocal coach (she coaches the likes of Beverley Knight, Newton Faulkner). Marky Dawson And The German Coastguard This year he has been working with a new backing band from Germany. Guitar bass and drums which is the long term line-up and full band is the artistic direction, although Marky will always want to do both solo and band gigs. (Their first name initials) as a jazz fusion trio, and also work as a studio backing band where they are based in Dusseldorf. Jobbing musicians all, they have masses of experience and can basically play anything. Fairly obviously Marky Dawson and GUT doesn’t really translate well in English hence the German Coastguard - a name taken from a humourous language ad. Thorsten praest guitar Thorsten started playing guitar at the age of 10 after seeing KISS live in concert. He took classical guitar lessons, taught himself electric guitar techniques and joined his first band INSESSION when he was 14 years old. After years of practise and playing in bands like BIG BROTHER and RIOT ACT he went to the MGI (Munich Guitar Institute) to study jazz/rock guitar. To expand his insight into jazz and improvised music he started to study jazz guitar at the HKA (Highschool of the Arts) in Arnhem/Nederlande after his graduation from the MGI. During that time he played in numerous bands and projects with a stylistic range from rock, funk to jazz. The band HÜHNERFRIEDHOF was founded during these days and is still one of Thorsten's most important musical playgrounds. Besides that Thorsten works as a freelance musician playing live/studio sessions and teaches guitar at different music schools. In 2008 Thorsten won the “Guitar Fight Club” – the first nationwide guitar contest of that kind in Germany. With GUT Thorsten combines high energy rock playing with sophisticated harmonic and improvisational concepts. Rox Management Ltd ULF STRICKER DRUMS Ulf Stricker rides the crest of a new wave of drumset artists who boldly incorporate indigenous acoustic percussion and electronic triggers/samplers. Known for a bright rimshot snare backbeat and solid, earthy tom/bass drum tones, Ulf's command of electronics is such that he can generate provocative sequences, backing tracks (including spoken word!) and accompany them with his drumset, in effect creating a "one-man band" for clinics and concerts. To this mix, he adds a multitude of timbres from percussion instruments, played in real time. Indeed, he enjoys the "best of both worlds". Born in Germany on April 16, 1977, Ulf has always been surrounded by music, thanks to his parents' huge and diverse record collection. For as long as he can remember, Ulf heard music from dawn to dusk in the family home. Interestingly, he did not begin life as a drummer, banging the usual pots and pans. Rather, when he was six, Ulf's parents bought a piano and set up lessons under a German program entitled musikalische Früherziehung. His progress was quick and his musicality so developed that at age ten he was invited join the Hilden Youth Symphonic Orchestra as a triangle and cymbal player. During his tenure with the symphony, a veteran timpanist assumed the role of Ulf's drum teacher, revealing techniques for snare drum, timpani and mallet instruments. In the meantime, Ulf kept up his piano studies and won accolades as a classical pianist. Following the path of adolescents the world over, Ulf gravitated to jazz and rock, switching to drumset at age fifteen. It was drums, not piano, that Ulf chose to pursue after completing high school in 1996. His search for post-secondary music training widened beyond German borders. At the Arnheim Institute of Arts in the Netherlands, Ulf had the opportunity of learning from true masters of the instrument, including René Creemers, of the renowned percussion duo Drumbassadors, and Joop van Erven. Since graduating in 2001, Ulf has made a living as a professional drummer and teacher. He has performed in a variety of musical genres with well-known European and American artists, including Bob Mintzer, Peter Weniger, Manfred Brundell, Roy Louis and Kelly Clarkson. During solo and clinic appearances, Ulf has shared the stage with Dave Weckl, Horacio Hernandez, Thomas Lang, Gavin Harrison, Dennis Chambers,Kirk Covington and many others. Ulf Stricker proudly endorses DW Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Latin Percussion, Remo Drumheads and Roland Electronics. Rox Management Ltd And so a new chapter begins in the career of Marky Dawson. Marky’s bluesy pop-rock songs defy categorisation which means he can play to all age groups and in most types of venue. He now has a backing band to die for, fortunately without having to actually die for them. Rehearsals began in Germany in January 2016 (photo below). The first appearance by the band is to be in London in late Spring. There will then be gigs in both Europe and the UK.
