Dennis - Wikipedia It is one of the most successful Australian musicals of the 20th century. Albert Arlen and Nancy Brown had worked on the musical since Arlen and Brown went to England in to promote the show. This was unsuccessful so they returned to Australia, borrowed some money, and self-produced the musical in an amateur production at Canberra's Albert Hall in March The cast included Edwin Ride and Brown. The show had a one-week run in Canberra, which was so popular that extra seating The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke (Dodo Press) the aisles had to be arranged. Later that year, J. Williamson's produced the musical professionally in Melbourne. The original six-week season at Melbourne's Comedy Theatre from 4 Novemberdirected by John Young, was later extended to five months. Amateur theatre groups in Australia often perform the musical. Sentimental Lady - Wikipedia It was originally recorded for Fleetwood Mac 's album Bare Treesbut was re-recorded by Welch on his debut solo album, French Kissin The original version of the song as heard on Fleetwood Mac's Bare Trees album clocked in at 4 minutes 34 seconds, with background vocals by Christine McVie. It had two verses, with a reprise of the first following the instrumental bridge. A re-recording, the most well-known version of the song, was a solo hit for Welch when he recorded it for his first solo album, French Kisswhich was released in September The first single released from the album, "Sentimental Lady" reached the top 10 in both the U. Donald Brackett, in his book, Fleetwood Mac, 40 Years of Creative Chaos has discussed Welch's poetic romantic lyrics in "Sentimental Lady" and writing and performing style. He describes the featuring of the song on the album Bare Trees as the best example of the group's move towards a new, softer and highly commercial style in the early s. Brackett suggests that the essence of the lyrics and nature of the song are "almost too gentle", but describes Welch's voice as like "crushed velvet", in that he believes the voice is simultaneously gentle and threatening in tone, a symbolic balance between the emotions of hope and despair. Though Dennis's work is less well known today, his publication of The Sentimental Bloke sold 65, copies in its first year, and by he was the most prosperous poet in Australian history. Together with Banjo Paterson The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke (Dodo Press) Henry Lawsonboth of whom he had collaborated with, he is often considered among Australia's three most famous poets. While attributed to Lawson by[2] Dennis later claimed he himself was the 'laureate of the larrikin'. Dennis was born in Auburn, South Australia. His father owned hotels in Auburn, and then later in Gladstone and Laura. His mother suffered ill health, so Clarrie as he was known was raised initially by his great-aunts, then went away to school, Christian Brothers College, Adelaide as a teenager. At the age of 19 he was employed as a solicitor's clerk. It was while he was working in this job that, like banker's clerk Banjo Paterson before him, his first poem was published [1] under the pseudonym "The Best of the Six". He joined the literary staff of The Critic inand after a spell doing odd jobs around Broken Hill, returned to The Criticserving for a time c. From he served as staff poet on the Melbourne Herald. But who knew we’d find as durable an application of that maxim as the one exemplified by the history of Fleetwood Mac? & Over the last thirty years, Fleetwood Mac has comprised fifteen musicians shuffled through six major lineups, resulting in endless tin- kerings with tone and genre. Yet the two members to survive it all rarely write tunes and never front the recordings. They’re the beat- keepers - drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John Me Vie. The fact that a rhythm section could sustain a band through thirty years seems all the more amazing considering the traumatic histories of the band’s shifting array o f stage-front stars.     20 rock the rabbit12 TH E FLEETWOOD MAC BY ANTHONY BOZZA ROCK ROYALTY MICK FLEETWOOD LOOKS baCK AT ONE OF THE GREATEST YET MOST DYSFUNCTIONAL baNDS IN MUSIC HISTORY AND FIGURES OUT WHAT COMES NEXT Stretching 48 miles long and 26 across, Maui, the second-largest of the Hawaiian islands, is a tropical paradise full of dreamy beaches and lush landscapes, the most atypical of which is arranged over 18 acres at 4,000 feet above sea level. Near the top of a winding one-lane road cut into a ruddy hillside, a shady driveway dips beneath a canopy of trees to reveal a spread that—minus the citrus groves—looks more like an English country home than a tropical retreat. Clouds that seem but an arm’s length away cast moody shadows over the homestead, giving the sense that this place is half a world from the sun- lit valley below. Lovely bushes of pink and blue flowers abuzz with bees line the roundabout that lies before the front door. Beyond it, stretching into the trees, a long, manicured lawn awaits a garden party or a game of croquet. Moore [pages 309–318] Abstract: At the beginning of the Symposium sessions at the Massachu- setts Institute of Technology and at Boston College Law School, Dr. Mi- chael Moore provided a narrative and photographic introduction to current threats to whale survival, with particular reference to North At- lantic waters off the eastern coast of the United States and the most en- dangered whale species, the North Atlantic right whale, Eubalaena gla- cialis. The conditions experienced by North Atlantic right whales reflect conditions faced by all the great whales of the North Atlantic. Given the 1935 absolute moratorium on hunting right whales in any waters, there are three major areas of current concern for whale conservation and sur- vival noted in Dr. Moore’s presentation and addressed in legal terms by subsequent contributors to the Symposium: (1) entanglement in com- mercial fishing gear; (2) vessel strikes; and (3) ambient and episodic ma- rine noise. They’d been traveling two solid days since their last job in Colorado. Touring with an unsigned band means you don’t have a label or a sponsor paying your way. It means you everything you eat and every motel room you sleep in and every tank of gas gets paid for out of your own pocket. It’s a tough way to make a living, and when you’re Bob Welch, with more than twenty years behind you as a professional musician, veteran not only of Paris and a half-dozen solo albums, but also of Fleetwood Mac, one of the most popular bands in history, you have to be asking yourself why. The answer is simply that this is the band he wants to play with. And for those who only know Welch through his ballads (“Sentimental Lady,” “Future Games”) the nature of this band might come as a bit of a surprise. Avenue M is an exponent of the current hard rock/metal sound that Van Halen and Aerosmith have brought into the mainstream of pop music. They play power chords and blistering solos and lay down a hard and polished groove. Over it all floats Welch’s haunting voice, one of the most perfect in rock and roll. The rest of the group consists of four guys in their twenties, recruited by Welch and his wife (now also his road manager), Wendy, from various Phoenix bands.
