Some Advice for Phone-Addicted Youth Who Want To
The Roots Report: Look What’s Going Down: Artists have a duty to voice their opinions Okee dokee folks… “It’s s time we stop, hey, what’s that sound, everybody look what’s going down.” This is from one of the most famous protest songs ever written, “For What It’s Worth,” by Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield). It was written more than 50 years ago in response to the Sunset Strip curfew riots in California and is still revered as one of the best songs of that generation. A few years later, Neil Young wrote his song “Ohio” about the Kent State shootings. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young quickly recorded this song, and when it was released as a single, it was backed with another Stephen Stills protest anthem “Find The Cost Freedom.” At the time, “Ohio” was banned by some radio stations, but today it is one of the few actual protest songs still being played on radio. These songs, the bands and the writers were major inspirations and influences for me as a musician and songwriter. Not only do I perform “Ohio” with my band Forever Young and “For What It’s Worth” when I play solo, but I have written many sociopolitical songs of my own that are part of my body of solo work. I feel protest songs need to be written, but they are the hardest type of song to get right. They need to express the concern and anger of the subject matter and marry it perfectly with a melody to make the song viable. -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

We’ve looked at the primary, basic threat and that is forsaking the Lord as our Wonderful Counselor. If we were not doing that, if we were not turning away from Him, if we were not indicating that we don’t think He’s enough, that He’s not wonderful enough, we wouldn’t have to worry about this second major threat, because the second major threat is turning to worldly counsel. If we felt the Lord was the Wonderful Counselor we would not be interested in the counsel of the world. But we have been turning, just like Israel turned from their fountain of living waters, we’ve been turning from our Wonderful Counselor, forsaking Him, drifting from Him, neglecting Him and His Word, underestimating Him and His Word. And of course that leads people to the second thing: turning to worldly counsel, allowing the infiltration of worldly wisdom of psychological theory and even the things that spawn like the twelve-step self-help movement and self-help literature and all of that, just to come rolling into the church. -

The Inner Shrine a Novel of Today
1 THE INNER SHRINE A NOVEL OF TODAY HARPER & BROTHERS NEW YORK AND LONDON M.C.M.I.X Copyright, 1908, 1909, by HARPER & BROTHERS. All rights reserved. Published May, 1909. I Though she had counted the strokes of every hour since midnight, Mrs. Eveleth had no thought of going to bed. When she was not sitting bolt upright, indifferent to comfort, in one of the stiff-backed, gilded chairs, she was limping, with the aid of her cane, up and down the long suite of salons, listening for the sound of wheels. She knew that George and Diane would be surprised to find her waiting up for them, and that they might even be annoyed; but in her state of dread it was impossible to yield to small considerations. She could hardly tell how this presentiment of disaster had taken hold upon her, for the beginning of it must have come as imperceptibly as the first flicker of dusk across the radiance of an afternoon. Looking back, she could almost make herself believe that she had seen its shadow over her early satisfaction in her son's marriage to Diane. Certainly she had felt it there before their honeymoon was over. The four years that had passed since then had been spent—or, at least, she would have said so now—in waiting for the peril to present itself. And yet, had she been called on to explain why she saw it stalking through the darkness of this particular June night, she would have found it difficult to give coherent statement to her fear. -

Wouldn't It Be Nice
wouldn’t it be nice by lewis shiner hat if? It’s not just science fiction and fantasy that asks this w question, it’s all of fiction. What if a young student murdered his landlady to prove his moral superiority? What if a woman survived the Civil War and three marriages only to find true love too late? It’s also the question by which we transform ourselves. What if I quit my job and moved to the desert? What if I turned myself loose to create “a teenage symphony to God?” The Icarus who attempted that teenage symphony in 1966 is now 53. For Brian Wilson it’s been thirty years of struggle: with drugs and diet, with people who want to run his life for him, with the intensity of his own feelings. The good news is that Wilson’s life is finally his own again. He is newly married to a woman named Melinda, who is calm and sweet and loving with him. He has a new house in the safety of a gated community high above the city. And he is back in the public eye with two new albums and a movie on the Disney channel. The film is I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times, directed by producer-of-the- moment Don Was. The soundtrack is a kind of Best of Brian Wilson, live in the studio with crack session players like Jim Keltner, Benmont Tench, and Waddy Wachtel. This is not only a wonderful album in its own right, it represents a healing of other wounds. -
1 a Conversation with Rufus Wainwright by Frank
A Conversation with Rufus Wainwright by Frank Goodman (6/2007, Puremusic.com) Rufus Wainwright has gotten so big in recent years that he needs no introduction from us. His new CD Release The Stars debuted at #2 in the UK and #10 at iTunes. He is the brother of Martha and the son of Loudon and of Canadian Folk icon Kate McGarrigle. In Wikipedia, his genres are listed as Baroque Pop and Popera. His dad in a PM interview said that Rufus began listening to opera at a very young age. No, he doesn't sing like that, but on the other hand, no one's melodies are quite or even remotely like his. Also, his string and horn arrangements (whether handled by himself or his partners in poperatic crime) are quite unto themselves, and always one of the elements that set him immediately apart from the field, the entire field. In Michael Hill's beautiful bio at rufuswainwright.com, both the author's and especially the artist's words tell the story of Rufus's first self-produced CD and connected events in a most impressive fashion. It's reassuring that in this vapid rapid time there are still real artists in popular music. Puremusic: We haven't spoken in this way since 2003, so it's really great to have you on the phone again. Rufus Wainwright: Thank you. PM: Release the Stars, another triumph. You're in top form. RW: Thank you so much. Yeah, I'm definitely going for something-- [laughter] RW: God knows what it is, but it's something.
