AWARD 1 Supporting Actor – Drama John Lithgow ‑‑ "The Crown" JOHN LITHGOW: Well, this is fantastic. I feel so lucky to have won this in the company of my fellow nominees. You guys, so many of you are my friends and former cast mates. I can congratulate all of you. Congratulations. You deserve this. "The Crown" just keeps on giving, and this is just the last of its gifts. Once again, I have to thank Peter Morgan, Stephen Daldry, Andy Harries, Ted Sarandos of Netflix, my reps, my wife, the magnificent English crew and company of actors led by the wonderful Claire Foy. (Applause.) But most of all, I have to thank Winston Churchill. In these crazy times, his life, even as an old man, reminds us what courage and leadership in government really looks like. I thank Winston Churchill. I thank the Academy. And I thank all of you.This is simply wonderful. AWARD 2 OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES KATE MCKINNON ‑ "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" KATE McKINNON: Yikes. Well, I can't ‑‑ thank you so much. Being part of this season of "Saturday Night Live" was the most meaningful thing that I will ever do. So I should probably just stop now. Thank you so much to Lorne Michaels for letting me be a part of this and for everything else in my life. Congratulations to our incredible cast, especially Vanessa, Leslie, and Alec. So I'd just like to thank the Television Academy for honoring our show and working with this incredible tribe of fierce women. Thanks to Liane Moriarty for writing these vulnerable flowers like Renada. Thank you, HBO. Jean‑Marc Vallee, I stand here like a host of others because of your brilliance and your bravery. And [unintelligible] the most incredible crew and cast. But thank you to Nicole and Reese's moms for not only giving us extraordinary women but really‑well‑read women because that's how I'm getting parts. I share this with my tribe of four ladies. I feel very proud to be part of reflecting fierce women and mothers, finding their voice. But I think really quickly, I just want to say this really belongs to Hiro Murai. He taught me everything about directing. He had the eye for this show first, and we sat down and he's just amazing. I really want to give this to Hiro and just say like I love you and thank you for being my best friend and making this with me. And I remember thinking as I was standing there alone that this was it. This was the high point. There would never be another season as crazy, as unpredictable, as frightening, as exhausting, or as exhilarating. Turns out I was wrong. (Laughter.) Thank you. Thank you to the Academy, to my wife Tracy who is over there, to my children, Ben, Duncan and Tess, my father Stan. This really belongs to three women: Reed Morano, who is over here, who directed the pilot episode of "The Handmaid's Tale"; to Margaret Atwood who ‑‑ (Applause.) ‑‑ scared the living crap out of me when I was in college; and to Lizzy Moss who leaves me speechless. This year, SIFF will screen 440 films: 198 features (plus 4 secret films), 60 documentaries, 14 archival films, and 168 shorts, representing 83 countries.     30 Rock: Complexity, Metareferentiality and the Contemporary Quality Sitcom Katrin Horn When the sitcom 30 Rock first aired in 2006 on NBC, the odds were against a renewal for a second season. Not only was it pitched against another new show with the same “behind the scenes”-idea, namely the drama series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. 30 Rock’s often absurd storylines, obscure references, quick- witted dialogues, and fast-paced punch lines furthermore did not make for easy consumption, and thus the show failed to attract a sizeable amount of viewers. While Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip did not become an instant success either, it still did comparatively well in the Nielson ratings and had the additional advantage of being a drama series produced by a household name, Aaron Sorkin1 of The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) fame, at a time when high-quality prime-time drama shows were dominating fan and critical debates about TV. Still, in a rather surprising programming decision NBC cancelled the drama series, renewed the comedy instead and later incorporated 30 Rock into its Thursday night line-up2 called “Comedy Night Done Right.”3 Here the show has been aired between other single-camera-comedy shows which, like 30 Rock, 1 | Aaron Sorkin has aEntwurf short cameo in “Plan B” (S5E18), in which he meets Liz Lemon as they both apply for the same writing job: Liz: Do I know you? Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Representations of transsexuality in films fall along a spectrum from freak-show sexploitation, to dramatic and documentary depictions of the struggles of transsexuals, and, finally, to the metaphorical use of transsexuality in exploring borders, not only sexual borders but also racial, religious, and political ones as well. The Transsexual as Joke Whereas transvestites have been depicted in film since the silent era, transsexuals (people who have undergone sex-change surgery or who choose to live as the opposite gender) entered the movies only in the early 1950s. The earliest celluloid glimpses of transsexuality appeared shortly after news of George/ Christine Jorgensen's 1952 sex-change surgery shocked and mesmerized the world with headlines such as "Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty," "Christine, by George!" and "Thousands in U.S. Don't Know Their True Sex." The first movie attempting to capitalize on the story came from Ed Wood, a quirky filmmaker who was once named the "World's Worst Director." Wood's Glen or Glenda (I Changed My Sex) (1953) tells two stories, one about a transvestite, one about a transsexual. Ex-Dracula Bela Lugosi lurks between scenes delivering screwball pleas for tolerance: "Vat are little boys made ov? Ees eet puppy dog tails? Beeg fat snails? Or maybe brassieres!" The result is pure camp, although Wood, a cross-dresser himself, flashed an intended moral across the screen in the film's opening frames: "Judge Ye Not!" The filming of Glen or Glenda is depicted in Tim Burton's 1994 film biography Ed Wood.

    ABSTRACT THE FEAR OF THE KNOWN: HORROR MEDIA AND THE USE OF FEAR TO MAINTAIN POWER Dana Peterson, MA. Department of Sociology Northern Illinois University, 2018 Diane Rodgers, Director A new subgenre has begun emerging in the horror genre: “woke horror.” Texts within this subgenre reflect the increased awareness of injustices against minority groups in American society. Prior research on horror has long connected the fears presented onscreen with real-life social anxieties of the time. Utilizing an intersectional framework that is concerned with racial, gender, and sexual orientation minorities, I engaged in a discourse analysis of three woke horror texts from 2017: American Horror Story: Cult, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Get Out. Through multiple rounds of coding, I was able to uncover a variety of themes that distinguish who holds the power in these horror texts, who is subordinate, and how the new fears of the woke horror genre are used to control groups within the texts. The codes also revealed who in these texts are able to be the saviors of the rest of the subordinate group. The present study offers an important update to the literature on horror, both in the continuation of the connections between on-screen fears and real life, as well as an introduction to what is sure to continue to be a growing subgenre.
