    WELCOME TO WHITEFRIARS Whitefriars College was established as a Catholic Secondary School for boys by the Carmelite Order of Priests and Brothers in 1961 in response to the strong demand by Catholic families for schools in which to educate their children in the tradition of their faith. As the years have passed and the College has grown, non-Catholics have also been welcomed into the Whitefriars community, but in essence Whitefriars has remained a Catholic school in the Carmelite tradition. The Carmelite tradition is traced back to the Holy Land of the late 12th century. There, a small group of Christians who had come from Europe as part of the Crusades, established themselves as a community of hermits on Mount Carmel. Whilst circumstances forced these early Carmelites to abandon both Mount Carmel and their hermit way of life, they took with them, as they eventually spread throughout the world, the spirit of both their original birthplace and the way of life associated with it. To this day, Carmelites endeavour to witness to the presence of God in people, in nature, in the Word of God and in the deepest recesses of the human spirit. Wherever they go and whatever they do, including education, Carmelites endeavour to cultivate a spirit of prayer and reflection, a commitment to justice and peace – expressed in the service of others, a respect for and a welcome of the individual and a keen sense of belonging to a community. Carmelites live ‘in allegiance to Jesus Christ’ and draw on the inspiration of Mary his mother, Elijah – the Prophet of Mount Carmel, and the many holy men and women who have followed the Carmelite ‘way’ in their lives.

The Carmelite presence in that country has been long and proud, leading many young men to take up a vocation in the priesthood. Whitefriars College is fully committed to supporting the works of the Carmelites through providing resources, both human and fiscal, to the many worthy projects and courses being undertaken. There are physical reminders of this connection around us at the College. Outside the Chapel is a photo wall of our boys and their recent immersion experiences. There brightly painted shipping container that houses many donated items and sits at Merinda; it is Timor bound shortly. The Timor- Leste flag also flies each day opposite the Reflective Garden. We all have the opportunity to further assist when, on Mt Carmel Day, we fund raise through the walkathon. Any assistance with sponsorship is always most appreciated. There was recently a gathering of those students who in Years 7-10 had a very successful academic semester one at the College. These boys mix ability with effort and we congratulate them on their achievements. Past student Julian Lipinski gave a talk on motivation and keeping all things in balance.

N. Lye and J. G. Hirschberg1 Abstract Over the last few decades there have been significant increases in student enrolments in Australian non-government schools. It has been suggested that this growth has been the outcome of government subsidies to non-government schools. Despite this significant funding school fees have also been increasing. In this paper we examine these changes for Victoria and look at a number of comparisons between government and non-government schools. In addition, rather than examining the determinants of school selection we examine the determinants of fees at non-government schools by estimating a hedonic price model. We conclude that the characteristics of the schools such as university entrance performance do have a positive impact on the fees. In addition, we determine that the socioeconomic status of the other students has a positive impact as well as the scale of the school as measured by the number of staff, the variety of the offerings and the age of the school all have a positive impact. 1 Department of Economics, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Vic, 3010. 1. There have been a number of success stories, with 42 players draft ed over the last five years including names such as Adam Saad (Coburg/Gold Coast), Kane Lambert (Williamstown/ Richmond), Dean Towers (North Ballarat/Sydney), Ben Brown (Werribee/North Melbourne) and Tory Dickson (Bendigo/Western Bulldogs). One area of development that can oft en be overlooked is that of the AFL-listed players in the competition. A prime example of this development is American-born Collingwood player Mason Cox who, aft er 21 games in the VFL, made his AFL debut in front of 80,000 fans at the MCG on ANZAC Day. For a player that had never heard of the AFL less than two years ago, it is a major achievement to progress so quickly to an AFL debut. Credit must go to the Collingwood coaching staff that has worked with Cox to help him reach his first game at the elite level. We would hope the high standard of football he has been exposed to each week at VFL level over the last 12 months has aided his development, like a number of other international rookie players in recent years. Over the last two years we have seen the likes of Cox, Kurt Heatherley (Hawthorn/ Box Hill Hawks), Jason Holmes (St Kilda/Sandringham) and Conor McKenna (Essendon/Essendon VFL), along with the new crop in Padraig Lucey (Geelong/Geelong VFL) and Matthew Korcheck (Carlton/Northern Blues) develop their game at VFL level with the aim of forging an AFL career.
