From the Principal Mr John Finn Principal

The College held a prayer service for Jack Stanbrook (Class of 2014) and his family in our Chapel on Wednesday evening.

Amongst the full Chapel were many of our Class of 2014, along with some older past students from the Class of 2009. Those young men were there to particularly support Jack’s brother, Tom.

These situations are always challenging in terms of how to best respect the wishes of the family in celebrating a life. Mark and Virginia told me that they were incredibly grateful for the support of so many and had their spirits lifted on the night. They are a wonderful, loving family.

We continue to support them on their journey this Monday with Jack’s funeral, which will be held at 11am in the McPhee Gymnasium. We are privileged to be able to offer our facilities to the family.

Particular thanks go to a number of young men from the Class of 2014, who helped to put together the service.

Whitefriars exists for all members of our community, present and past.

As I write this piece, I am surrounded by the smell of dumplings and all things Asian. It is Multicultural Week at Whitefriars. Such weeks reinforce the diversity of our own population and the need to continue to work at harmonious and productive relationships with all. As we are now officially an International school, we take every opportunity to focus on global citizenship and an outward looking view of the world.

The Whitefriars International Students Program (WISP) is in its 20th year. This is a fine effort. We have a healthy and vigorous program, one much sought after by overseas students. To recognise this achievement the College had a celebration at the Manningham Convention Centre with over 170 people in attendance. It was a night of music, formal talks, dancing and singing (even Elvis made an appearance!). Well done to Mrs Emilia Fields and the international staff team.

The Senior Years production of “The Three Musketeers” has taken place; it was completely produced by the Theatre Studies class. This meant that all lighting, sound and performance cues were student driven. Congratulations to the boys on such a successful and entertaining evening.

The Class of 1997 gathered in the Functions Room last Friday evening. There was a tangible camaraderie in the room along with considerable nostalgia for times past. The interesting aspect to note was the number of these men who have regularly stayed in touch with each other since school days. So many had been to each other’s weddings and family occasions. Whilst the age of the cohort may be twenty years beyond their school time, personalities did not seem to differ too much nor did the telling of tall tales. It was also fascinating to see the diversity of occupations in the room. Whitefriars continues to try to meet the needs of all boys, no matter what their talents, interests and abilities.

Our Year 9 families have had the opportunity to attend one of a number of Study Skills sessions recently. The Theatre has been close to full which tells a tale of high parent interest in their son’s learning. Thank you to the many parents who took up this opportunity.

We have many talented young sportsmen at the College. We also have talented staff. Ms Kelly Hoinville recently won two gold medals at the Tasmanian Open Karate Championships. These were in Super Division 1 and the female open categories. Ms Hoinville is aspiring to both the World and Olympic Championships.

I am on sabbatical for the next few weeks. Mr Brad Bird will be Acting Principal for the first part of that time.

Please keep John Piera (L6) and his family in your thoughts and prayers on the recent loss of his grandfather. May he rest in eternal peace.

Learning @ Whitefriars Mr Mark Ashmore Deputy Principal - Learning and Teaching

Stages of Learning As we learn we experience a variety of emotions and behaviours. The learning process includes stages that allows for new learning, consolidated learning, a time when one may feel like they are ‘treading water’, or even the feeling of ‘drowning’. Every person learns differently and most will experience all four stages of learning described above.

What typically happens when learning something new? What does it feel like? What does it look like?

Think back to a time when you have learnt a new skill – answering a mathematical question, learning to snow ski, drive, speak in public, or to research information.

In learning something new we may experience a lack of control, uncertainty, anxiety; some may experience excitement, joy or even optimism. Effective learners persist, practise, experiment, ask questions, reflect, and construct meaning.

Learning is messy and complex; a normal part of the new learning is that it is difficult or awkward.

Confidence, happiness and energy is built when at a stage of consolidation. A student when consolidating demonstrates their learning, questions the learning in the context they are in, maybe they seek further affirmation; they are engaged in a ‘doing’ phase. Collaboration and making connections with our own experiences, and others, happens at this stage of learning. This ensures that the neural pathways are consolidated and embedded.

Students can become disengaged if they are bored, frustrated, complacent, disruptive, or withdrawn in the process of learning. In this the ‘treading water’ stage, no new or consolidated learning can happen. Likewise, if one is overwhelmed then the drowning stage can develop. Drowning may mean that emotions and behaviours like frustration, despair, defensive responses, vulnerability, isolation, deflection, delusion, and avoidance become evident. People who procrastinate or quit are most likely to be experiencing treading water or drowning.

It is important to note that treading water and drowning are normal states of learning…and these states can shift to new or consolidated learning with a change in mindset or focus. A misconception in student learning, and often the first reaction, is to quickly lose confidence and give up completely.

What do I need to do?

Beliefs, values, mindset, and focus – this self-regulation ensures an emotional response through the pre-frontal cortex of the brain to ensure a strategic response and new or consolidated learning.

Resources are from the International Leadership and Management Program (ILMP) and Educaa (2015, 2017).

Examination Preparation Years 9, 10 and 11 students are now preparing for their Semester One examinations. The examination period (Wednesday 7 June – Thursday 15 June) is an important to time to consolidate learning, practice responses to questions and seek feedback.

Students have been reminded that they may access the Elevate Education website (www.elevateeducation.com.au) to receive strategies in regards to use of class time, studying and examination techniques. Likewise, Year 9 students can use the skills learnt during the recent Study Skills Workshops.

The College understands that examinations are just one way of assessing a student’s knowledge and understanding in their academic studies.

In preparation for the examinations, students should be demonstrating the skills important to learning as highlighted in our Learning @ Whitefriars document:

- Clarifying what is to be examined in each subject by asking the teacher questions

- Collaborative academic conversations with their peers

- Practicing questions and essays before submitting these to the teacher for feedback.

- Reflecting critically on the learning that has occurred during the semester.

If further strategies are required or if one is experiencing anxiousness over the next coming weeks, they are encouraged to speak with their Pastoral Leader, Head of House, subject teacher or College Psychologist.

Please Note:

Year 11 students accelerating in a Unit 3 subject and Year 10 students accelerating in a Unit 1 subject, or studying a VET course are required to attend examinations as per the examination schedule. When not scheduled to sit an examination students are to attend their accelerated classes as per the Semester One timetable. Year 11 students have student free days during the examination period to study for the Semester One examinations. Year 9 and 10 students are to be at school to attend scheduled study sessions during the Semester One examinations. Year 9 students attend school as normal as the examination schedule is structured within the timetable.

PISA is coming to our school!

Our school has been chosen to represent Australia for the OECD Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) Field Trial which is taking place on 16 June 2017. A random sample of 15-year old students will be part of a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent Australia in education!

PISA is an important part of the National Assessment Program in Australia, which is the measure through which governments, education authorities and schools can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes. All Australian Education Ministers have agreed to Australian schools’ participation in PISA, which is reflected in the Australian Education Act 2013.

International assessments provide a wide range of valuable information for education policy and review in Australia and overseas and also enable Australia to consider the performance of our education system compared with others.

PISA 2018 is the seventh PISA study that has been conducted since 2000 and involves more than 80 participating countries. The Field Trial for PISA 2018 will be conducted in 2017 and the Main Survey will be conducted in 2018.

What will PISA mean for our school?

Seventy nine students who are randomly selected from our school will be sampled to complete a two-hour computer-based assessment consisting of mathematics, science, financial literacy and reading questions. These students will also be asked to complete a questionnaire.

Every participating school and student has an important role in showing the rest of the world what Australia can do. ACER will provide your school and participating students with a certificate, recognising their contribution. Each student will also receive a small gift in appreciation of their participation.

Students who have been randomly selected have been notified via parent letter home (Click here). A meeting with all randomly selected students was also organised at the start of term further outlining PISA for those students involved. Any queries or questions please feel free to contact me at the College.

Mrs Anne Maree Wight Edith Stein House Report Head of House

Term 1 has seen a fantastic, action-packed start to 2017 for Edith Stein House. The boys settled in very quickly and have approached the year with an enthusiastic and energetic outlook - it is especially great to see a positive example being set by the senior boys, making all new students feel welcome and ensuring that they understand what it means to be a member of Stein. At the beginning of the year the Year 12s had their camp at Mannix College, with the Year 7s heading off to Camp Manyung shortly after. Both groups thoroughly enjoyed themselves – the Year 7s especially seemed to be in their element; with plenty of energy and such a shared, positive attitude, the future is looking bright for Stein House. Our passionate leadership team is showing great promise and initiative. Each Pastoral Care group elected their HRC representatives and Ms Wight and the PCTs selected our Senior House Leaders. We acknowledge and congratulate the following boys: Stein Senior Leaders: Connor Dineen 12 E4 House Captain, Xavier O’Neill 11 E3 House Vice-Captain, Harrison Kerwin 12 E7, Fletcher Dean 12 E7, Emerson Gomes 11 E5, Bevan Fernandes 11 E4, Ronan Miller 11 E6, Harvey Deane 11 E4, Will Stark 11 E1, Liam Jones 10 E6, Conor O’Farrell 10 E3, Tyler Kerwin 10 E2 and Nick Canil 10 E2. Stein HRC Representatives: Suriel Youssef - E1, Oliver Pietrobon - E2, Luke Bajan - E3, Bevan Fernandes – E4, Emerson Gomes – E5, Jack Sims – E6 and Dylan Simonella – E7.

Earlier this year the Year 7 members of Stein and their families were invited to be a part of the traditional House Badge Presentation, followed by a gathering around the Reflective Garden where the boys and their families could talk with each other, with Ms Wight, other Pastoral staff and a few of the senior students. It was clear that everyone had found new friendships, enjoyed themselves and settled in well to Whitefriars and more specifically, to the House of Edith Stein. So far 2017 has been successful for inter-House competitions, with Stein coming a strong second in the House Athletics Carnival to Lisieux. The effort and participation on the day of the Athletics Carnival was fantastic and the fact that students put their hands up for almost every event meant we consistently achieved great results across the board. The help and organisation from the all members of Stein, especially some of the senior students and staff, was awesome, and ensured the day ran smoothly for our House. Stein has decided to change its charity focus for 2017 towards raising money for the Movember Foundation that was set up in 2003 by former Whitefriars College students, Adam Garone, Travis Garone, Luke Slattery (Class of 1991). Our own Mr Mike Jackson, Pastoral Teacher for E6, is a member of the Class of 1991 as well and has worked very hard to raise money for Movember over the past few years at Whitefriars. His efforts have inspired the boys, so we thought it only appropriate to support this excellent Foundation and its work this year. From very humble beginnings, the Foundation and has grown to be a very significant global force in promoting and providing funding for various Men’s Health issues. These include prostate cancer and testicular cancer, as well as mental health and suicide prevention. Our particular focus with the Stein students will be on raising their awareness of men’s mental health issues and on raising funds to support programs related to this crucial area, including suicide prevention. Our House Feast Day last week was a great celebration of our House and also a great fundraising venture for what we have called ‘Movember in May’. To initiate conversations about the charity and fundraising drive amongst the House and the wider College community, the Year 12 Stein students have been growing moustaches this month! It was amazing to see all the moustaches out in force, whether they were real ones by the Year 12s or fake ones from all the other year levels. All of Stein gathered in the Chapel for our feast day Mass which was hosted by former principal of Whitefriars College, Fr Paul Cahill. We were all reminded of the life of Edith Stein and how she is such an important figure in our lives today. Lunch was served in the functions room following the mass, with moustache awards being handed out and a photo booth set up for students to take photos with a giant purple moustache that was made by E1 Pastoral Teacher Mr Johnson. All the boys enjoyed themselves throughout the day and it was great to see the Year 7s experience their first Stein Feast Day! I would just like to thank all of the Senior House leaders, the Pastoral Care Teachers and Ms Wight for all the hard work that they put in to make sure the day ran as smoothly as possible. A special mention also to Liam Jones 10 E6 who baked 190 cupcakes for the whole House to enjoy! Congratulations to all Stein boys for their efforts so far this year! I hope to see our positive attitude, responsibility and enthusiasm continue throughout 2017. Connor Dineen, Stein House Captain

VCAA Plain English Speaking Award The Plain English Speaking Competition was a fantastic experience that has helped with my public speaking capabilities and general communication. The competition was divided into two parts, the prepared speech and the impromptu. For my prepared speech I discussed the issues with social media shame culture and for the impromptu we were given the topic: ‘Real learning doesn’t occur within the classroom’. The competition was tight between us and the other schools including OLMC, Bundoora Secondary, St Monica’s, and Parade. Overall the competition was very helpful and I’d like to thank Mrs Fitzsimons for her help in assisting Tom Dillon and I with preparation for the competition.

Alex Vander Year 10

On Monday 29 May, Alex and I went to OLMC Heidelberg to participate in VCAA’s Plain English Speaking Award (PESA) competition. This competition encourages senior students to create an oral on a relevant global topic and deliver their own point of view. Catholic schools from around the Heidelberg area came together at OLMC to spectate one another’s speeches. PESA comprises of two parts; a prepared, 6 minute speech, and an impromptu 3 minute oral with 4 minute preparation time. PESA provides aspiring public speakers with an opportunity to speak their mind on a contemporary issue whilst also honing their own speaking skills.

Mr Kristan Height Science Learning Leader - Science

On 18 May, a small group of Year 9 and 10 students went to Deakin University in Geelong to compete in the annual Science and Engineering Competition against eight other schools. There was a wide variety of engineering focused activities that small groups of three of four students had to compete in. Depending on how well you completed the task to a set of criteria, you earned points for your school which contributed to a winner for the day. All of the boys had heaps of fun and really enjoyed competing in their respective tasks and as a school. By the end of the day, with only one activity to go (the bridge), we were tied in second place and only 7 points behind the leaders, St Joseph’s Geelong. We had been working on this all day to ensure the bridge was strong enough to support a moving load of weights, and our position in this activity would largely affect our overall position for the day. Our bridge was able to hold five weights, putting us into second place for the activity and into first overall, meaning we were the winners and will be able to progress into the state finals later in the year. This is the fifth time in seven years of being involved in the Science and Engineering contest that Whitefriars College has won this event.

We would like to thank Mr Sykes and Mr Height for organising the day, mentoring us and allowing us a chance to experience this event.

Ms Jo Anne Menzies SET News Environment Coordinator

The Sustainability and Environment Team’s term focus on biodiversity has been in full swing the last fortnight. Here is a recap.

Threatened Species - Information Week & Year 9 Indonesian Melbourne Zoo’s Fighting Extinction campaign was the focus for the Library’s Information Week. The Zoo has listed 21 native fauna South-Eastern Australian species that are threatened. Students participated in two Kahoot! Quizzes at lunchtime last Thursday 25 May. Students learnt about the Stuttering frog, Tasmanian Devil’s facial cancer, Helmeted Honeyeater and many other species and what they can do to help. Congratulations to all the students who participated. Well done to the winners! Thank you to Mrs Corbin, Ms Vella and all the library staff who helped run the event. For more information on native threatened species, visit https://www.zoo.org.au/fighting-extinction/priority-native-threatened-species.

The Kahoot! Quiz continued in Mrs Scott’s Year 9 Indonesian class as they are investigating threatened Indonesian species for their Environment Unit. Although Indonesia is only 1.3% of the total world landmass, it has 17% percent of the world’s biodiversity. Unfortunately, it has the highest amount of threatened, vulnerable and endangered species in the world. The sad plight of the Orang-utan is one story, but there are hundreds more. There are only 60 Javan Rhinocerus’ left in the wild. As much as it feels hopeless to do much, everyone can have an impact on helping biodiversity health. Australians have consumer power. Consider avoiding or using alternative products that use sustainable palm oil. The following link is from BOS (Borneo Orang-utan Survival Australia) that lists Palm Oil free or alternative products. Please read their disclaimer.

http://www.orangutans.com.au/Orangutans-Survival-Information/Helping-you-buy-responsibly-Palm-oil-free-alternatives.aspx

Biology Fieldwork The U1 Biology classes completed fieldwork in the College Bushland. Abiotic measurements and vegetation profiles was completed using transect lines and quadrat surveys. The College bushland has significant plant species and some with interesting histories. Early settlers first used the Hazel Pomaderris’ leaves as toilet paper! The boys also learnt how to tell the difference between the native Prickly Moses and the look alike Gorse weed.

Frog Census The College Frog Census concluded last Thursday. Over the month, the Eastern Common Froglet and Southern Brown Frog were recorded. The elusive Southern Toadlet unfortunately was not heard, but Melbourne Water has found a small population at Hillcrest Reserve near the Mullum Mullum Tunnel opening. Thank you to the Manningham City Council education officer, Rebecca Cherubin who led the group during the month and colleague Nigel Philpot and David De-Angelis, an old boy ecology consultant who educated the group on all things frogs. Thank you to the staff and families who gave up their Thursday evenings to come along to the frog census: Mr Firmin, Wallis family, Mr Berryman, The Height family, Ms Ross and her U1 Biology Class, Miss O’Connell, Smith family, Ravenarki family, Minahan family and Mr Melenhorst.

War On Waste Whitefriars College has spent a lot of energy trying to manage our waste and the process continues as we look into better processes and contractors to remove landfill and co-mingled waste. ABC is airing Craig Reucassel’s War On Waste series. He is on a mission to uncover how much waste we produce as a nation and learn what we can about it. To view, ABC Tuesdays 8.30pm or iView or the College click view (please see Ms Scicluna 17/5 email).

EASL Sustainability Conference Whitefriars College participated in the recent Eastern Alliance for Sustainability Learning conference at Box Hill Institute Lilydale. Rob Gell was the inspiring guest speaker and spoke about the importance of student connection with their environment and the futures of schools. Schools from four council municipalities participated and it was a good opportunity to compare, share and be inspired by other school environmental programs.

Sustainable and Environment Team student activity SET meet every Monday lunchtime at the Outdoor Learning Centre. Everyone is welcome. For more details, contact Ms Menzies at [email protected].

Mr Gavin Kellar Sports Report Faculty Head - Sport

Sport Report Badminton

The ACC Open Badminton tournament started with a cold morning. There was a bit of drama filling a team, so firstly, I would like to thank Mr Burton and Mrs Smith for taking us there. Secondly, I would like to thank a few of the following Year 12s; Keaton Airs, Alex Killender and Kyle Derndorfer for filling in and keeping the morale up all day.

Everyone in the team was happy to give everything a go and not to give up. A very good example of the ‘never giving up’ principal we have at Whitefriars College, Owen Yu and Corliss Xian were losing 14-6 and suddenly came back to 18-19 – just narrowly losing by the sound of the bell.

Finally, The Junior tournament held on 4 May was an overall successful day. We finished third overall. We were undefeated until we played Salesian and Mazenod. Tiandu Liu and Wilson Low were the standouts, pushing the team to do better throughout the day.

A big thank you must go to Mr Burton for the work that he put in to both teams being able to compete on the day.

Keegan Hakim, Badminton Captain

Sport Report Cross Country

The 2017 Cross Country season is ready to get rolling. As we had with the Athletics season, there will be an emphasis on fun, staff/student involvement and general fitness through our ‘High Performance’ training within the Cross Country program. It is an opportunity for Students and Staff of all ages, ability levels and different sports the chance to achieve their personal fitness goals in a group environment, whether it be for Elite junior competition or to enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of regular exercise. We are once again fortunate to have the expertise of four-time Olympian Craig Mottram to coach a multi-faceted running program for Whitefriars on our Wednesday morning sessions, as this forms the basis for all sporting and fitness pursuits. To succeed at any sport now you have to be an athlete and Craig’s coaching will definitely assist in this area. Cross Country Round 2 Report

Round 2 of the Victorian All Schools Cross Country series was held on Saturday 20 May at the fast-paced circuit of Albert Park, South Melbourne.

With a few layers of fitness in the boy’s legs since starting training with Olympian Craig Mottram, we were hungry to match it with some of the other Secondary Schools across Victoria over 2km or 3km.

Our Year 7 to 9 teams strung-together some scintillating efforts, which included Year 7 young-gun Noah Wright closing in a time of 7.45 minutes and Year 8 teammate Tom Sonderhof in a time of 7.52 minutes for the 2-kilometre circuit.

Tackling the 3 kilometre circuit, our Year 10-12 teams sought to follow in fine form after the juniors. Year 10 400-metre sprinter Hugh Parrott stepped up the distance; stopping the clock in a solid time of 9.56 minutes, while Year 11 teammate Matthew Bagnara emerged not far behind with a well- earned run of 10.38 minutes. Making his long-anticipated return to the racing scene was Year 12 runner Eamon Wright, coasting through his leg of the relay circuit in a smart 10.06 minutes.

Once again, Whitefriars pulled together another fantastic team of 22 students after many years of racing the All-Schools series. Thank you to Mr Kellar, Mr Loprevite, Mr Cotter and Mr Worner who assisted in recording some of these fantastic efforts.

Our next event is the third and final round of the Victorian All-Schools series at Bundoora Park on Saturday 17 June, culminating as part of the State Cross Country Championships!

As Captains, Oscar, Travis and myself have really enjoyed the commitment to the weekend events and would love to see more! If you would like to compete, please email Mr Kellar before 5 June. Scott Benedict, 2017 Cross Country Captain Sport reports Golf Earlier this month the Whitefriars Golf team comprising of Marcus Raptopoulos, Hugh Hassel, Bevan Fernandes, Ryan Siow, Conor O’Farrell, Jack Knight and myself travelled to the Northern Golf Club for the annual ACC Open golf tournament. The 18 hole tournament proved a challenging and eventful day for the team who ended up finishing in fifth place in Division one with 397 strokes between the top four golfers. Despite valiant efforts from all the boys the team failed to remain in division one of the strong competition and as a result next year will compete for the division two title. Some great individual performances by number one ranked golfer Marcus Raptopoulos who shot the lowest score for Whitefriars on the day and strong efforts from the remaindered of the young team shows immense hope and promise for the coming years. With the junior tournament fast approaching in October there will be another chance for our young Whitefriars team to compete for a premiership. A big thank you must go to Mr Dalrymple for the work that he put in to us being able to compete on the day. Nick Dunmill, Golf Captain

Bevan Fernandes Conor O’Farrell Jack Knight

Finally Congratulations to the following boys:

Callum White (Year 7 C5) who competed in the Victorian Secondary Schools Orienteering Championships 2017 on Friday 19 May and represented Whitefriars proudly. Callum competed in a class above his age group (M14A, not M13A) and came 2nd! This result now puts him in with a chance for selection into the Victorian Secondary Schools Team.

Nicholas Coffield, College Football Captain, has been selected in the Victorian Metropolitan U/18 football sides and will compete in the NAB National Championships against the best footballing talent in the country. The carnival begins on Sunday 18 June at Subiaco against Western Australia before taking on Victorian Country (June 24), South Australia (June 30) and the Allies (July 5).

Well done boys!

If your son has been selected in any state or national sides please feel free to let me know via my email address [email protected] so that I can give them recognition in this report.
