From the Principal Mr John Finn Principal

Welcome to third term. Our young men seem to have returned fresh and enthusiastic for the challenges ahead.

At the end of last term, a group of thirty-five boys and five staff journeyed to Darwin and the Tiwi Islands as part of an indigenous immersion program. This group had the opportunity to partake in life in Northern Australia in a way that many others are not able to experience. The College is grateful to Jason Jones (father of Kaiya in Year 10) who arranged this trip in liaison with our staff. The boys met Senior Australian of the year, Sr. Anne, on the Tiwi islands, stayed at the Michael Long Centre in Darwin, journeyed to Kakadu and played football against the Northern Territory under 16 side. A number of inspirational speakers who tried to impart their stories of The Dreamtime, family life and the Stolen Generation complemented those journeys. Quite a set of memories!

I had the opportunity to meet with the group last week and was very taken by their own reflections and sense of gratitude. This life experience will remain with the boys and staff forever. It also gives the College further opportunity to explore the ways in which we are able to educate our Community on Indigenous culture in a non-tokenistic and meaningful manner. We are currently exploring further ways to do so. Principal’s Report continued over page ...

In Fide Newsletter Issue 11 28 July 2017 Principal’s report continued.

The Year 9 cohort were in the City during the final week of last term. This gave them the chance to see our City in a different context. We take for granted that our boys are well travelled in that area. However, many Whitefriars boys know the Eastern suburbs roads far better than laneways. This exploration of the City precinct proved valuable in understanding the place of law, finance, business, sport and tourism. Our boys were excellent ambassadors whilst journeying around.

Two Whitefriars staff were in Timor-Leste over the holiday break. They went there to teach young who are in training at Hera, just near Dili. Mr Vujcich and Ms Matthews worked with these brothers in Philosophy, English and Information Technology. Their generous efforts were much appreciated by the Timorese.

The third and final Kairos retreat has just concluded. This Year 11 program had been a strong feature of College life for a number of years. Despite longevity, the impact on individual boys does not diminish. Kairos means, “In God’s Time”. The belief that there is a reflective way forward for all of us is an essential component. Young men thinking about and expressing their spirituality is a powerful reminder of the inherent goodness and optimism of youth. Well done to our Year 11s who entered so wholeheartedly into Kairos.

Br Matthew Tonini is a Carmelite in training who has been a regular staff member each Friday of this year. He has now left the College to pursue further ministry placements as part of his broad education. We thank Br Matthew for his efforts and look forward to maintaining our contact into the future.

We have now concluded Visual Arts week. This highlights the talents and skills of students. Whilst never blessed with any talent in that area myself, I am full of admiration for our young men who are so dedicated and refined in their work. We look forward to the exhibition early next term.

Fr Paul Sireh was the celebrant for our Mother and Son Mass on Monday. It was lovely to see a near full College Chapel. The focus was on the role of women and mother’s in the life of the boys and young men present. There were a number of past mums present who were accompanied by their sons, who are now in their twenties and thirties. Thank you to Mrs Marie Cameron, Mrs Nola Murphy and Mr John Abrahams for the organisation of the Mass and function.

Our Year 10 boys are now working with their families and staff to make decisions on pathways for next year and beyond. This is an important and exciting time in the life of the boys as they make discerned choices about subject areas that will be of most interest and benefit to them. The Course Advise day is to take place shortly.

Guys and Dolls opened on Wednesday in the College Theatre. It is a four-night run, which has been sold-out. It is a fabulously entertaining show where the Whitefriars boys and Siena girls perform with great gusto and expertise. Congratulations to the cast and crew and to our teaching staff, who have so completely immersed themselves in the experience to benefit the performers and technicians.

A reminder that Presentation Evening take place on Monday 13 November at Hamer Hall. All students in Years 7-11 should attend. The night will be a wonderful celebration of our year.

The Whitefriars Community passes on its sincere condolences to staff member, Mr Greg Stewart, his wife Eva and their two children, Nick and Jessica on the passing of their daughter and sister, Jemma. May the Lord embrace the Stewart family with His love and great care.

We also think of the Corda family at this time. Mr Greg Corda, husband to Lina and father to Marcus (Year 12), Luke (Year 9) and Julia, passed away recently. May God’s perpetual light shine upon him.

Max Tyler From our Captains Middle Years Vice Captain

It has been a fast start to semester 2. It has been good to see all the boys come back with good energy and enthusiasm. Firstly I would like to commend the efforts of the Year 9 boys, completing their first lot of semester examination successfully. The Year 12 boys have knuckled right down for their final full term of schooling before exams and Year 10 students are starting to think about their subjects and pathways for next year. The swimming carnival is being held today and I’m sure it will be a great day with good spirited competition from all the boys. I would also like to mention that we are putting together teams for Cancer Council’s ‘Relay For Life’. We are hoping to get plenty of boys together from all year levels to raise money for cancer research. Good luck for the rest of the year boys, put your head down and work hard. It’s going to fly.

Mr Simone Livingstone Nationally Consistent Learning Leader - Learning Support Collection of Data

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (the national data collection) is an annual collection that counts the number of school students with disability and the level of reasonable educational adjustment they are provided with.

The aim of the national data collection is to collect better information about school students with disability in Australia. The information provided will help teachers, principals, education authorities and families to better support students with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability.

For the 2017 NCCD collection, Victorian Catholic schools must provide their data collection via an excel spreadsheet which specifies individual student names. Where parents/carers/guardians do not consent for their child’s name to be provided, they must return to the school the consent form attached.

Please click here for more information regarding the Data Collection and the Consent Form.

If you require further information, please contact Simone Livingstone, Learning Leader – Learning Support [email protected] or 9872 8366.

FOCUS ON OPEN DAYS

Click here to access the current Open Day Calendar and Careers Newsletter:

For students considering studying at TAFE or University after school, it is crucial that they attend Open Days. Throughout the year, vocational and tertiary institutions open their doors to the public and showcase their courses, accommodation, scholarships, pathway courses, student services and their ‘point of difference’. At an Open Day, you will be able to:

Get a feel for the culture of the campus Learn about courses and career options Undertake campus and accommodation tours led by current students Speak directly to students and lecturers about the courses or careers you are interested in Compare the course area you are interested in at different institutions Learn about student sports and societies you can join and be active in Get course counselling and guidance Attend information sessions and workshops Watch live demonstrations Listen to bands, eat lots of food, participate in activities and have fun!

Students should not pick a course at an institution without visiting the campus – they potentially will be spending several years studying there and spending tens of thousands of dollars on the course and accommodation. It’s worth making the effort. By now they should have identified institutions they would like to visit, found out their open day dates and downloaded their open day programs. Once they have the programs, students should make a list of the information sessions they would like to attend. Supporting your son through this process is invaluable. Try and attend information sessions on topics like pathways, scholarships, accommodation and overseas exchange programs. Some of the questions you can ask course authorities are listed below.

Are there any prerequisite subjects I need to study for this course? What study scores/ATAR do I need to achieve to get into this course? Do I need to attend an audition, have an interview or present a folio as part of the selection process? Are there any other ways into this course other than through a VTAC application? Can I do a vocational course first which might then lead into a university course? What is the difference between TAFE and university study? If I can’t get into this course, is there a similar course at this institution I can apply for? What are the core subjects for this course and are there any electives? How many hours per week are spent in class and can I study part time? Can I defer the course? What kind of jobs do graduates of this course generally get? Are there any scholarships available?

Mr Joshua Vujcich Timor-Leste Visit Learning Leader - Religious Education Ms Fiona Matthews Lead Coach Learning Teaching and Technology

Moments of encounter can be transformative experiences. Since 2014, an important ministry for the College has been the annual staff immersion to the Carmelite novitiate in Hera, Timor-Leste. This service-learning opportunity seeks to strengthen the partnerships between our local Carmelite family. The Carmelite community in Hera is home to almost forty young men who are discerning their vocation or call to the Carmelite way of life. The program delivered by staff aims to support the brother’s formational journey, by focussing on improving their confidence in speaking English through the teaching of introductory philosophy. We explored the big questions of life, examined the great thinkers of the Western philosophical tradition and unpacked the important relationship between faith and reason. Contemporary learning is at the heart of this encounter – critical thinking, reflection and dialogue form the backbone of the program. It is humbling to spend time with young men who are so open to sharing their life and experience with us. Teaching moments are more than just what happens in the classroom – celebrating liturgy with the community in the chapel at 5am (!), having conversations over table or helping with essays are all ways we accompany them on their Carmelite journey – integral moments in relationship building. We are very grateful for the continued support of John Finn and Fr Bruce Clark O.Carm for their encouragement with this service-learning program, and we look forward to the continuing partnership into the future.

Toby Brown Progress x Conference Middle Years Captain

During last term, Lachlan Mathewson and I (Year 9) had worked hard to apply for a Youth Ambassadors Position with Save the Children Organisation. We had been working very closely with College Youth worker, Miss Ellett in trying to accomplish this. Unfortunately we were not accepted into the program. Although, with one door closing, another opened and we were invited to the Progress X Conference. 35 out of 500 applicants from around the country were invited: another opportunity that was offered through Save the Children. Lachlan, Miss Ellett and myself, attended the conference to learn and to understand how to launch our own Youth Ambassadors Program at the College. Progress Youth organised the opportunity of the chosen applicants to hear a range of expert speakers, high-profile international guests and interactive workshops designed for young leaders between the ages of 14 and 22 years.

The three day program was held at Melbourne Town Hall. It was packed with iconic speakers, challenging workshops, and opportunities to open our minds to different ways of thinking and learning about topics based around social justice. Throughout the program, Progress X introduced us to independently organised practical workshops, full-day short courses, project launches, sector-themed catch-ups, and internal staff and board meetings of not for profit partner organisations.

PROGRESS YOUTH: We spent the three days with these two respected public icons:

2017 Youth Representative to the United Nations, Paige Burton, and key sponsors welcomed Progress Youth participants from around the country and provided an outline of the exciting program that’s been designed to recognise the uniqueness of youth activists and offer strategies and practical skills to help strengthen the campaigns and networks of our next generation.

Tim Norton manages Save the Children’s advocacy campaigns and public engagement activities. He has extensive experience in building social movements around political moments and human rights issues, and coordinates Save the Children’s engagement with its supporters and advocacy partners. Prior to joining Save the Children, Tim worked as a Digital Campaigner for Oxfam Australia and a Press Secretary for Senator Rachel Siewert. Tim also manages Save the Children’s youth advocacy program, which supports passionate young people to take part in political, social and international diplomacy and lobbying.

PROGRESS YOUTH / WORKSHOP: Building Your Online Tribe

Two international guests – Michael Whitney, who served as digital fundraising manager for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 US Presidential primary, and Nicole Aro, a leading expert in digital campaigning, will give participants with a first-hand glimpse into the strategies behind some of America’s strongest online communities. Then, the young people got the chance to share their own insights about how teenagers and younger Australians use technology as a tool to connect and build movements for change.

PROGRESS YOUTH / WORKSHOP: Using Existing Communities to Build Change

Schools, universities, colleges, churches, youth groups and sporting teams — existing networks and communities are all around us and can offer our movements great resources and extended capacity. The young people got the opportunity to join leaders from two of Australia’s strongest youth movements to learn the practical skills needed to recognise and tap into these communities to build change.

Ms Jo Anne Menzies SET News Sustainability and Environment Facilitator

TAKE2! Climate Action Initiative

The Victorian State Government is taking action on climate change. TAKE2 is a climate change pledge run by Sustainability Victoria inspired by the 2015 Paris Climate Change Conference, where 196 countries agreed to reduce emissions and keep warming under 20C from 2005 levels. TAKE2 is a collective climate change initiative helping all Victorians to a cleaner, greener future through action.

All Year 7 students took the TAKE2 pledge last Friday 21 July during their level assembly. The Sustainability and Environment Team presented what would happen if no action were taken compared to simple changes and habits that would make a big difference to climate change.

What can Whitefriars College families do to reduce emissions and help keep warming under 20C?

Renewable energy – ask your energy provider if you can source 100% green energy or look into going solar No plastic bags – BYO shopping bags Reduce waste – minimal landfill waste, recycle as much as possible, eat left overs etc. Compost food scraps– food into landfill creates gas emissions Purchase recycled toilet paper Transport choices - can your son walk to school/ride a bike/car pool/use the bus? Coffee cups – use your own instead of the shops Reduce meat consumption Lunchbox – please avoid cling wrap and wrappers. Put food into containers Drink bottles – refillable water stations are at the school. Avoid purchasing water bottles Thermostat – set it to under 200C Carbon Offset – when travelling purchase these credits Donate or Recycle clothing Turn off electrical equipment when not in use Support Environmental Groups – For example, Melbourne Zoos works hard to protect endangered Victorian Species Gardening – create a vegie garden at home or plant native species. Following the presentation, the Year 7 students planted 100 native species in the school ground to support their TAKE2 pledge. Planting reduces emissions and creates habitats for local fauna. The planting was also in line with National Tree Planting Day, Friday 28 July. Whitefriars College Sustainability and Environment Team encourages families to make the pledge. Please visit https://www.take2.vic.gov.au/.

“Connecting People with Nature” Photography Competition Thank you to the many entrants so far who have entered the annual Sustainability and Environment Team annual photography competition. The 2017 theme is “Connecting People with Nature”. There have been many interpretations and creative images so far. Entries close Monday 21 August. Maximum of three entries per person. Whitefrair families are encouraged to enter. Please email Ms Menzies for an entry form at jmenzies@ whitefriars.vic.edu.au

Sustainability and Environment Team Monday lunchtime activity Thank you to Leo, Andrew and Luca who helped plant 6 myrtle wattles and 24 climbing natives during the Monday lunch SET activity. The boys are doing an excellent job helping with the Offset Planting to gain the permit for the new science building. The College needs to plant 1179 plants by November. So far the College has completed 60% of the offset schedule. The College Captains will be planting in the next few weeks for National Tree Planting Day.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Monday lunchtime activity. Unless otherwise stated, please met Ms Menzies at the Outdoor Learning Centre at the start of lunch break and bring your lunch.

Mr Gavin Kellar Sports Report Faculty Head - Sport

“Senior hockey is off to a great start in 2017, with two big wins to cap off the season. On Wednesday the Senior Hockey team took on Emmanuel College out at the Footscray Hockey Centre, it was a fantastic win from the boys with some great team play, with the final score being 14-4. A very strong performance from Bevan Fernandes putting away numerous goals as well as Mitch Gill-Hanlon and Matt Spillman both producing great skills to score some crafty goals. A very solid performance from Kyle Derndorfer and David Basa at the back kept Emmanuel’s attack at bay, whilst goal sneaks Jascha Coetser and Travis Baker were knocking them in up the other end. Nick Dunmill, the stand in goalie did a fantastic job showing his dominance whether it be on the field or in the net. Overall it was a fantastic team performance from all the players contributing greatly for a good team win.” Matthew Coen, Hockey Captain

“The Senior Table Tennis Team for 2017 travelled out to Altona North, to earn our first win for the season against Emmanuel College, with a combination of individual and team performances getting us over the line.

Massive congratulations to both Sam Harte and Daniel Karanicolos for winning both their singles and doubles matches, playing integral roles in getting us over the line. Another congratulations to Hayden McLean for holding strong in a tough-fought middle seed contest, a win that proved pivotal in our success for the afternoon.

Emmanuel were a great challenge to overcome by our boys and as the team starts to take shape we all look forward to a promising season ahead. Whitefriars are now 1-1 for our season and hope to turn that record positive in the coming weeks.”

Alex Killender, Table Tennis Captain

Finally congratulations to the following Whitefriars students for their achievements:

• Our College Football Captain, Nicholas Coffield for his outstanding performances for the Victorian Metropolitan Under 18 side whilst competing tin the NAB U/18 Australian Football Championships. From his outstanding performances in these championships Nicholas was selected in the All Australian side positioned on the Half Back Flank; and has since been chosen to attend the NAB AFL draft combine.

• Ned Hargreaves Year 7 A1, has been selected in the Australian Under 13 Baseball Team, travelling to the USA this week to play in the Cal Ripken Jnr World Series in Branson, Missouri. Ned was selected from a recent National Tournament held in Lismore NSW, where 20 teams from across the country, competed for the Australian Little League Baseball National Championship. There were 15 players selected from this tournament to the Australian Under 13 team and Ned was fortunate to be one of two Victorians selected to the team. He will play against teams from countries such as Canada, Japan, Mexico, Korea, Dominican Republic to name a few.

Well done Boys!

If your son has been selected in any state or national sides please feel free to let me know via my email address [email protected] so that I can give them recognition in this report.
