Dean, M.D., for twenty-one years of service to the University and its School of Medicine; for holding highly in!uential roles at the Medical Center, including the Richard T. Myers Professor and Chair of Surgery, Director of the Division of Surgical Sciences, Medical Center Director, and President and CEO of Wake Forest University Health Sciences; for providing visionary leadership and renowned vascular surgery; for enhancing our international academic relationships; for intensifying our focus on research development, and dramatically expanding the Piedmont Triad Research Park; and for leaving an incomparable imprint on our institution and community. Wake Forest University honors John W. Hammon, Jr., M.D., for seventeen years of service to the University and its School of Medicine as Professor of Surgical Sciences–Cardiothoracic Surgery; for four years as Howard Holt Bradshaw Professor and Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery; for being an outstanding physician and superb cardiothoracic surgeon, who achieved national and international stature as an authority on arrhythmias and congenital heart surgery; for his eloquent speaking and accomplished writing; for his frequent invited presentations at professional meetings and important contributions to the clinical literature; for his critical role as a respected researcher and educator; and for earning the sincere appreciation and high regard of students, trainees, and colleagues. Wake Forest University honors Susan M. Hutson, Ph.D., for twenty years of service to the University and its School of Medicine as a loyal and valued faculty member of the Department of Biochemistry; for her expertise in nutritional biochemistry and investigation of amino acid metabolism and its role in dietary protein consumption and in neurotransmitter synthesis; for her passion for research as re!ected in her abundant scienti"c publications and presentations, underscored by her appointment as Deputy Associate Dean for Research; for her commitment to education and enthusiastic training of medical students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows and mentoring of fellow scientists; and for her exceptional contributions that will long be celebrated by the Wake Forest community.
