Getting Serious About Iraq 1 Getting Serious About Iraq ○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○ Philip H. Gordon, Martin Indyk and Michael E. O’Hanlon In his 29 January 2002 State of the Union address, US President George W. Bush put the world on notice that the United States would ‘not stand aside as the world’s most dangerous regimes develop the world’s most dangerous weapons’.1 Such statements, repeated since then in various forms by the president and some of his top advisers, have rightly been interpreted as a sign of the administration’s determination to overthrow Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.2 Since the January declaration, however, attempts by the administration to put together a precise plan for Saddam’s overthrow have revealed what experience from previous administrations should have made obvious from the outset: overthrowing Saddam is easier said than done. Bush’s desire to get rid of the Iraqi dictator has so far been frustrated by the inherent difficulties of overthrowing an entrenched regime as well as a series of practical hurdles that conviction alone cannot overcome. The latter include the difficulties of organising the Iraqi opposition, resistance from Arab and European allies, joint chiefs’ concerns about the problems of over-stretched armed forces and intelligence assets and the complications caused by an upsurge in Israeli– Palestinian violence. Certainly, the United States has good reasons to want to get rid of Saddam Hussein. Saddam is a menace who has ordered the invasion of several of his neighbours, killed thousands of Kurds and Iranians with poison gas, turned his own country into a brutal police state and demonstrated an insatiable appetite for weapons of mass destruction. -

Marketing Professional Wrestling to Children: an Ethical Examination

BERNTHAL, PHD, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA INTRODUCTION As noted by Laczniak, Burton, and Murphy (1999), there has been a notable lack of attention given to marketing ethics in the sport literature, and the attention which has been given has focused on an important yet relatively limited set of topics, much of it addressing the issue of ambush marketing (e.g., Meenaghan, 1996; O’Sullivan & Murphy, 1998). The practice and study of marketing ethics is as important for the sport and entertainment industry as it is for any other. Kotler’s (1997) “societal marketing concept” suggests that organizations should build social and ethical considerations into their marketing practices, acting in the best long-term interests of society. The Code of Ethics of the American Marketing Association (AMA) also promotes the importance of marketing ethics, stating that marketers should not do harm knowingly, and should offer products and services that are safe and fit for their intended uses. Reasons can be posited as to why such a lack of attention to marketing ethics exists within the sports literature. For instance, one might charge that within academic research as a whole, dismissal of research considered to be colored by a normative or overly polemical tone is commonplace (perhaps rightfully so). Further, one might harbor the notion that the consumption of sport in its various forms has relatively little potential for harm. In other words, challenging the marketing of other consumer products within an ethical framework, such as marketing tobacco to teens and credit cards to the young and to the mentally disabled, seems a valuable pursuit given the potential harm these products can do to consumers. -

Commencement UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER MAY 6, 2021 One Hundred Forty-Fifth Year of the University NORLIN CHARGE TO THE GRADUATES The first commencement at the University of Colorado was held for six graduates on June 8, 1882, in the chapel of Old Main. It was not until 40 years later, on September 4, 1922, that the first summer commencement was held. Since the first commencement in 1882, the University of Colorado Boulder has awarded more than 350,000 degrees. The traditional Norlin Charge to the graduates was first read by President George Norlin to the June 1935 graduating class. You are now certified to the world at large as alumni of the university. She is your kindly mother and you her cherished sons and daughters. This exercise denotes not your severance from her, but your union with her. Commencement does not mean, as many wrongly think, the breaking of ties and the beginning of life apart. Rather it marks your initiation in the fullest sense into the fellowship of the university, as bearers of her torch, as centers of her influence, as promoters of her spirit. The university is not the campus, not the buildings on campus, not the faculties, not the students of any one time—not one of these or all of them. The university consists of all who come into and go forth from her halls, who are touched by her influence, and who carry on her spirit. Wherever you go, the university goes with you. Wherever you are at work, there is the university at work.
