When the Devils celebrated their 1991 NCAA Basketball Championship there was a Gardner-Webb alumnus in the middle of the celebration. Max Crowder, a 1960 Gardner-Webb graduate and native of Cherryville, serves as the athletic trainer for the Duke basketball team. This was his ninth trip to the Final Four with the Duke basketball team. Following his graduation Gardner-Webb, Crowder entered Duke University, where he graduated in 1962. Since then, he has been employed at Duke in the Athletic Training Department.
