The 2009 University of North Carolina volleyball team faced one of the tougher schedules in the country as the Tar Heels slate featured 10 NCAA Tournament teams from 2009. Carolina posted five wins against the 10 tournament teams, including wins over Oklahoma, Tennessee and Duke. Carolina darted out to 7-2 league record, rocketing to the top ACC standings. The Tar Heels would fall shy of reaching the NCAA Tournament, despite an 11-9 record in conference play. The Atlantic Coast Conference was as tough as ever, featuring a league record five NCAA Tournament teams. A quartet of seniors closed their spectacular careers, capped by a dramatic come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Virginia Tech in their final home match.

The Tar Heels return to “Blue Heaven, ”their home at Carmichael Arena in 2010, after playing the last two seasons at the Dean E. Smith Center. The facility, which stood since 1965, underwent a massive remodeling project that includes a brand new multi-millon dollar maquee scoreboard, renovated locker rooms and staff offices, arena concourse areas, lighting and acoustics. North Carolina will look to continue their home court advan- tage in the newly renovated building as the Tar Heels complied a 83-19 home record at Carmichael since 1999. Highlighted by a 17-0 home mark in 2002, Carolina volleyball hosted the first ever second-round NCAA Tournament game in Carmichael after a first round win over South Carolina. One year later, Carolina beat that same Gamecock squad to advance to the NCAA regional semifi- nals for the first time in program history. In two seasons in the Dean E. Smith Center, Carolina earned a 20-6 home mark. In 2003, UNC played its first ever match at the Smith Center against Duke on October 17. The game was held in conjunction with the “Midnight with the Heels” promotion celebrating the men’s basketball team’s first practice of the year. The Tar Heel volleyball team did its part to create a festive mood, defeating the Blue Devils in five thrilling games. The 16,126 fans were the most people to ever see a regular-season NCAA vol- leyball match, and Carolina now finds itself in the NCAA record book for attendance at a match held in conjunction with a special promotion of another athletics event. The Tar Heels will re-open their home in emphatic fashion hosting three-time defending National Champion Penn State Saturday, August 27 at Carmichael in the marquee game of the Carolina Classic. Originally the home to the Carolina men’s basketball, newly renovated Carmichael Arena is now the home of the women’s volleyball team, as well as the women’s gymnastics, men’s wres- North Carolina swept Duke 3-0 Oct. 26, 2001 in front of 2012 fans at historic tling and women’s basketball teams.
