According to Benedict, today’s increased level of government regulations and bus inspections are making it more difficult for bus/coach companies to start in the industry. However, he does feel that those existing companies, following all of the rules and regulations and maintaining solid safety records, seem to be doing well. “It all comes down to focusing on your goals, as a company, and to not compromise. Public transportation continues to gain in importance as different U.S. population segments opt for travel alternatives other than the automobile. Busline Magazine recently spoke with an executive from the award-winning MTA to find out how this system is meeting the ever-growing needs of its new bus ridership.

According to the authority, this ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) certi- fied door-to-door service is for people with disabilities who are unable to ride or navigate fixed-route public transportation, including lift-equipped buses. “Like many other transit operations in the country, Mobility/Paratransit is growing faster than we can keep up,” Smith said. “We’ve been using local private taxi compa- nies to help us meet this demand.” According to the MTA, its Call-a-Ride Service or C.A.R. Service is an on-demand, premium taxi/sedan service that provides increased independence for people with dis- abilities. The service is available to MTA-cer- tified Mobility/Paratransit customers who meet the eligibility requirements. MTA Call-a- Ride Service is not part of MTA Mobility/Paratransit service, but rather is a separate and distinct MTA service provided under contract by participating area taxi and sedan companies. “MTA will pay up to $20 per taxi ride,” Smith said. “The customer pays any amount over $20. This service has grown significantly the past few years. It is something our passen- gers take advantage of as they see it as an option or alternative to the fixed-route and/or Mobility/Paratransit services.” Top MTA priorities are safety and customer service. The authority recently received a safe- ty award presented by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), which was announced at the organization’s annual Bus & Paratransit Conference in May in Kansas City, MO. APTA presented MTA with a Gold Award for Security in the bus systems with 20 million or more passenger trips annually category. The

“As we work with all sizes of fleet operators, BAUER’s vast range of CNG compressors makes it easy for us to specify the exact size and type equipment for each special requirement. BAUER’s line of compressors allows us to install high pressure volume with minimal input. Frequently, we only have 5 psi of inlet pressure combined with a large amount of CNG required for the fleet. Utilizing BAUER’s new C26 X-FILL Series compressor we are able to meet virtually every requirement.
