CLEVELAND-CLIFFS INC. NORTHSHORE MINING FACT SHEET Northshore Mining (NSM), which originally operated as Reserve Mining Company, was the first taconite processing facility in North America when it opened in 1956. It was purchased by Cyprus Minerals in 1989, and Cleveland-Cliffs became the sole owner of the property in 1994. Northshore Mining’s Peter Mitchell Mine is located in Babbitt and the taconite is transported 47 miles by rail to the processing facility in Silver Bay, near Lake Superior. The Assessment Control Sheets must be completed to meet U.S. Coast Guard and STCW requirements for an endorsement as Officer in Charge of a Navigation Watch On Vessels of 500 GT or more, which means the following: • Third Mate, Any Gross Tons Near Coastal/Oceans or; • Mate, 1600 GRT Near Coastal/Oceans or; • Mate, 500 GRT Near Coastal/Oceans The assessments of competency may be conducted aboard a seagoing vessel by a mariner who is serving on the vessel upon which the assessments are completed. The assessor must: Hold an STCW endorsement at the management level (STCW Regulation II/2-master or chief mate) valid for service on seagoing vessels of at least 200 GRT/500GT; OR Hold an STCW endorsement as OICNW (2nd Mate, 3rd Mate, or 500/1600 GRT Mate) and have at least one year of experience as OICNW on seagoing vessels of a least 200 GRT/500GT; OR Be serving on a seagoing military vessel of a least 200 GRT/500 GT and is either the Commanding Officer or Executive Officer or is authorized to conduct similar assessments for the U.S. -

RESOLUTION Grand Marais Bay: Harbor of Refuge? WHEREAS, the village of Grand Marais which is located in Burt Township, Alger County, Michigan has been issued a death sentence by the U.S. Department of the Army, Corps of Engineers and that said penalty is to be executed in direct opposition to the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights in an inhumane, destructive and unnatural means; neglect, and WHEREAS, Grand Marais, the oldest place name in Michigan, was discovered by French Explorers Radisson and deGroseilliers in 1658, was recognized as a settlement by the French as early as 1774, was granted Harbor of Refuge status by the U.S. Congress in 1880, was first utilized by natives, explorers and settlers, grew to a thriving community of 5000 around the turn of the century and became the central point for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula logging industry and later a productive commercial fishing port, and is now being discovered and enjoyed by boaters and nature lovers in ever growing numbers. Grand Marais Bay, developed and preserved by nature for hundreds of years, is an historically significant treasure of the United States of America, the State of Michigan, and the community of Grand Marais to preserve and protect for future generations, and WHEREAS, Grand Marais Bay is the only Harbor of Refuge between Whitefish Point and Munising, Michigan, is located along Lake Superior’s notorious ninety mile “shipwreck coast”, and is where the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sought to improve safe passage through the construction of two concrete walled piers and a breakwall of timbers and boulders to improve the safety of moored vessels inside the harbor in 1894, and WHEREAS, the U.S. -

Stonehouse writes therein “If there is truly a graveyard of Lake Superior, it is the general area of Whitefish Point. More vessels have been lost there than any other part of the lake.” Stonehouse lists over 100 vessels lost between Grand Marais MI, west of Whitefish Point and Pt. Iroquois MI, southeast of Whitefish Point. Less than half of these shipwrecks have been found and documented to date. Several shipwrecks of historical significance have been found in amazingly well-preserved condition including the Comet, Cowle, Vienna, Osborn, and Mather as documented in GLSHS’ project report “The Art and Science of Mapping Lake Superior’s Shipwrecks: Ghosts of the Shipwreck Coast” 1.
