THE STATE OF LAKE SUPERIOR IN 2000 SPECIAL PUBLICATION 07-02 The Great Lakes Fishery Commission was established by the Convention on Great Lakes Fisheries between Canada and the United States, which was ratified on October 11, 1955. It was organized in April 1956 and assumed its duties as set forth in the Convention on July 1, 1956. The Commission has two major responsibilities: first, develop coordinated programs of research in the Great Lakes, and, on the basis of the findings, recommend measures which will permit the maximum sustained productivity of stocks of fish of common concern; second, formulate and implement a program to eradicate or minimize sea lamprey populations in the Great Lakes. The Commission is also required to publish or authorize the publication of scientific or other information obtained in the performance of its duties. In fulfillment of this requirement the Commission publishes the Technical Report Series, intended for peer-reviewed scientific literature; Special Publications, designed primarily for dissemination of reports produced by working committees of the Commission; and other (non-serial) publications. Technical Reports are most suitable for either interdisciplinary review and synthesis papers of general interest to Great Lakes fisheries researchers, managers, and administrators, or more narrowly focused material with special relevance to a single but important aspect of the Commission's program. Special Publications, being working documents, may evolve with the findings of and charges to a particular committee. Both publications follow the style of the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. Sponsorship of Technical Reports or Special Publications does not necessarily imply that the findings or conclusions contained therein are endorsed by the Commission. -

ANALYSIS “Big Two-Hearted River” (1925) Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) Chapter IV The vignette preceding the story, Chapter IV, renders the death of a bullfighter gored in the arena. In the previous vignette the bullfighter, Maera, is characterized as a responsible matador with integrity who is consequently assigned the bad bulls that survive bad matadors. The story dramatizes the recovery of a soldier wounded in the war, who like the bullfighter got injured by chance. A bull is wild like warfare and wildfire. The first 7 vignettes in In Our Time are about war, followed by one about crime, then 6 vignettes about bullfighting. This vignette and story bring together the thematic motifs of war and bullfighting. Both the soldier and the bullfighter are carried away on a stretcher, one in war and one in peace. Everything speeds up for the bullfighter as he dies, whereas everything slows down for Nick as he recovers. The vignette that follows the story is the second one about crime, bringing the third motif into relation with the other two. In Our Time is a succession of dispatches and stories by a war correspondent intended to shock complacent readers into facing the brutal facts of life. Violence and the prospect of death are everywhere in our time and all time. I Nick Adams, an American Adam, experiences a “Fall” when he gets wounded on the Italian front in Chapter VI of In Our Time (1925): “He had been hit in the spine.” Though he is the protagonist, Nick is so much subordinated in the book, especially by the vignettes—in the Naturalist tradition the individual is a small and insignificant speck in the universe--that most readers miss the fact that he got wounded and consequently have no idea what happens in the last story or what it means. -

A maximum of $50 was set as a limit, with a much lower cost expected. VERNACULAR IN CURVES: THE MYTHOLOGIZING OF THE GREAT LAKES WHALEBACK by Joseph Thaddeus Lengieza April, 2016 Director of Thesis: Dr. Bradley Rodgers Major Department: Maritime Studies, History The “whaleback” type of bulk commodity freighter, indigenous to the Great Lakes of North America at the end of the nineteenth century, has engendered much notice for its novel appearance; however, this appearance masks the essential vernacularity of the vessel. Comparative disposition analysis reveals that whalebacks experienced longevity comparable to contemporary Great Lakes freighter of similar construction material and size, implying that popular narrative overstates whaleback abnormality. Market and social forces which contributed to the rise and fall of the whaleback type are explored. RESOLUTION Grand Marais Bay: Harbor of Refuge? WHEREAS, the village of Grand Marais which is located in Burt Township, Alger County, Michigan has been issued a death sentence by the U.S. Department of the Army, Corps of Engineers and that said penalty is to be executed in direct opposition to the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights in an inhumane, destructive and unnatural means; neglect, and WHEREAS, Grand Marais, the oldest place name in Michigan, was discovered by French Explorers Radisson and deGroseilliers in 1658, was recognized as a settlement by the French as early as 1774, was granted Harbor of Refuge status by the U.S. Congress in 1880, was first utilized by natives, explorers and settlers, grew to a thriving community of 5000 around the turn of the century and became the central point for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula logging industry and later a productive commercial fishing port, and is now being discovered and enjoyed by boaters and nature lovers in ever growing numbers. Biographical & Historical Information: The son and grandson of shipyard workers, Charles Patrick Labadie was reared in Detroit and attended the University of Detroit. He began his career with the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, became director of the Saugatuck Marine Museum, then earned a master’s license for tugs and worked for Gaelic Tugboat Company in Detroit. He directed Duluth’s Canal Park Museum (now Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center) from its founding in 1973 until 2001. In 2003, he was appointed historian for the NOAA’s Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, Michigan. Scope & Content: This is an extensive 19th Century Great Lakes maritime history collection. The vessel database is accessible through library’s website. S. waters of the Great Lakes and sport fishing is limited. Canada allows commercial harvest from Ontario waters of Lake Huron only. Lake sturgeon is considered threatened or endangered by 19 of the 20 states within its original range in the U.S. Lake sturgeon abundance was reduced dramatically in the late 1800’s by commercial overfishing and habitat degradation. The life history characteristics of lake sturgeon, late maturity and infrequent spawning after maturity, prevent populations from rebounding quickly after such catastrophes. Fishery agencies are providing training and equipment to commercial fishers for data collection from lake sturgeon. -

P. GOGAN AND JEAN FITTS COCHRANE Introduction Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) historically occupied the boreal forest zone across the North American continent. The distribution and abun dance of the species has declined in the past century. In particular, it has been extirpated from much of the southern limits of its historical range on both sides of the boundary between Canada and the United States (Bergerud 1974). Translocation of animals from extant populations may be used to reestablish populations in portions of the species' former range. Recently, wildlife biolo gists in Ontario have translocated woodland caribou to a number of sites in or adjacent to Lake Superior. While it is too soon to evaluate their long-term suc cess, these restoration efforts do provide useful insights into factors likely to influence the outcome of woodland caribou translocations elsewhere.
