Every week we interviewed old men from the countryside who told us that generation after generation of their family had worked on a scraggly piece of land from which they were now being evicted, … people who had lived in the same house for decades only to find that it was now 1 declared a white area and they had to leave without any recompense at all.”—Nelson Mandela OVERVIEW: Although racism and informal segregation are features of many societies around the world, they reached their zenith with the imposition of formal apartheid in South Africa from 1948 to 1994. The key elements of apartheid are not unique: spatial segregation by race/ethnicity; mechanisms to control the movements of members of the indigenous people now deemed non-citizens of the new nation-state; military occupation and violent suppression of protest; and denial of citizenship and voting rights to the disadvantaged group in order to prevent them from using electoral means to effect change.

Using neglected corporate archives as well as oral testimony by former directors, the thesis scrutinizes the decision-making processes employed by the outlier on disinvestment – German business. Through seven case studies, the thesis illustrates how Apartheid policies, rather than being the foundation for business success, were the originators of enduring financial and operational woes.

Traditionally, the objectives of a country’s foreign policy concern security and welfare. But, the search for national prestige, for autonomy or for a change in the world’s power relationships or ideological re-orientation can all inform the foreign policies of many states.1 South Africa is no exception; during the stewardship of Prime Minister BJ Vorster, his objective was the launching of a policy of détente. As a consequence, South Africa was subjected to continuous external criticism. At the insistence of the discrimination apartheid policy, South Africa was excluded from a wide range of intergovernmental agencies and conferences, was isolated by the international community and became the object of an economic boycott by the vast majority of African states. It therefore was clear that the increasing hostility towards South Africa’s domestic policy would isolate the country further. The world’s reaction to South African’s domestic policy demonstrated that foreign opinion had an influence on domestic policy, and that it imposed constraints on the conduct of foreign policy.

    Comment Two fronts of anti-apartheid struggle: South Africa and Canada John S Saul [email protected] Having been, for most of my adult life, a student of southern African, including South African, affairs, I was pleased but also intrigued to receive an invitation from Ingrid Fiske and the South African Association of Canadian Studies to come to South Africa to give several talks and seminars in this country. This included a public lecture on the topic presented in this essay – an essay which explores both the collaboration between Canada and South Africa in support of apartheid, as well as the much more savoury links established between (many) Canadians and (most) South Africans in resistance to that system. Let us first explore the former of these two possible emphases. 1 There are, to begin with, obvious parallels between the two countries, not least the fact that both Canada and South Africa, as we know them, were outcomes of Western European imperial conquest. True, the histories were somewhat different. In Canada, the indigenous societies – some agrarian- based and others premised on hunting, trapping and a more nomadic existence – were an easy target for something very close to quasi-genocide for much of our early history, and then an extreme form of marginalisation more recently. On the other hand, in South Africa, at least beyond the Cape, the large and more firmly settled and grounded indigenous African populations were less vulnerable to any such ‘final solution’. Instead, here, whites – when not killing blacks and driving them off the most economically promising land – became adept, as we know all too well, at availing themselves, to the advantage of the white-dominated economy, of the labour of such indigenes.
