From Green to Gold — October 1, 2017 The Holy Father’s October Prayer Intention As we enter the month of October we know fall is well upon us. The weather last week may have deceived us as it seemed more like summer with Universal: Rights of Workers the heat and humidity. It definitely is football season despite that weather. and the Unemployed In fact my favored team and the local team are both 2 and 1. Once again last That all workers may receive Sunday the Redskins looked like a team that truly can compete this year. respect and protection of their Both offensively and especially defensively they looked good, beating a for- rights, and that the unemployed midable team, the Oakland Raiders. My Packers continued to struggle. They were expected to decimate the Bengals, who had yet to win a game and have may receive the opportunity to been rather hapless this year so far. But Green Bay was behind almost the contribute to the common good. entire game until some Aaron Rogers magic, which tied the game with 14 seconds remaining. It went into overtime where the Packers rallied to beat Cincinnati. The bigger news, however, seemed to be whether players would stand, kneel, sit or even show up for the National Anthem. I thought these Weekly Readings were supposed to be games of skill, but like the weather last week I was de- ceived, for they have become political statements. This all started last season when a player (from Wisconsin who was quarterback for the 49ers) made his statement by taking a knee in response to how Blacks have been treated by police. Some others followed his lead, although no one on the Packers had, until Sunday! Numerous players, coaches, and some owners, including Dan Snyder of the Redskins, reacted to a Tweet from our president concerning all of this. Sadly, the president used language that is unnecessary and crude. He did correctly observe that NFL Twenty-Sixth Sunday attendance and viewing audience numbers are down, for a number of you have told me you no longer watch or attend games because of all this. He in Ordinary Time also suggested that these players be fired if they are not going to support the Sunday anthem and our nation. Just as the players have a right to take a stand on this issue, it would make sense that the president also could. Thankfully, we Ez 18:25-28; Phil 2:1-11 or 2:1-5; have the freedom of expression in this country, just as we have the freedom Mt 21:28-32 of religion. Unfortunately, that particular freedom is often challenged today, so I suppose it shouldn’t surprise us that other freedoms are also called into Monday question. I really don’t want to spend too much time on this subject, but al- Zec 8:1-8; Mt 18:1-5, 10 ready have, so suffice it to say while many of the players have said this has become a matter of unity, I am not seeing a lot of unity here, really just the Tuesday opposite. It behooves us to look to Christ. Even here there is disunity, but if Zec 8:20-23; Lk 9:51-56 we follow the Truth there will be unity. Freedoms will be respected, those of different color of skin will be, the unborn will be (more about that next Wednesday week), but we have a long way to go and, as with so many other things, much Neh 2:1-8; Lk 9:57-62 for which to pray. Speaking of unity in my opinion that was well expressed last Sunday, Thursday not on the gridiron, but in the St. Veronica parish hall and courtyard. We Neh 8:1-4a, 5-6, 7b-12; had our annual Oktoberfest celebration. Attendance was good, the weather Lk 10:1-12 was great, albeit a bit warm, the food was wonderful as were the beverages. The kids seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the games, inflatables, and the First Friday rock climbing wall. The music was perfect. It all made for a truly outstanding Bar 1:15-22; Lk 10:13-16 day. It was so good that we ran out of food a bit too early. While many were involved, particularly from the PTO and the Knights, the two sponsoring or- First Saturday ganizations, I want to especially thank Russ Gustin from the Knights and Bar 4:5-12, 27-29; Lk 10:17-24 Lisa Ashe from the PTO, who again this year headed everything up. As I said they had many assistants, some of whom worked all day and really a number Sunday of days on making the event as good as it was, so I am grateful to every one of them and to those of you who had the opportunity to attend. These are the Is 5:1-7; Phil 4:6-9; Mt 21:33-43 kinds of things that also can help to show the unity of faith that we as Chris- tians, as Catholics, and as parishioners share. ~ In Christ, Fr. Support our MOBILE ULTRASOUND AND October Respect Life PREGNANCY RESOURCE CENTER Outreach Activities on Sunday, October 1st, 2017 Gabriel Project, Natural Family Planning, New & Expectant Moms Group, Pro-Life Apostolate, Youth Apostolates and Adoption Support Group.

This free service enables them to see the heartbeat and encounter the humanity of their developing child, and hopefully continue their pregnancy. The mobile center will bring compassionate, pro-life counseling and ultrasound technology to colleges, universities, abortion facilities and pregnancy resource centers.

“Upon seeing a baby on an ultrasound, a majority of women change their minds and make the decision to give life to her unborn child.” - Angela Clark, www.abestchoice.us

Baby bottles will be distributed after all Masses on September 30th and October 1st, 2017. Take one to fill with your change, bills or a check. (Please make checks payable to A Best Choice Mobile Ultrasound).

Please return the filled bottles no later than the weekend of October 7-8, 2017. Your donation could save the life of an unborn child. Thank you.
