The weather last week may have deceived us as it seemed more like summer with Universal: Rights of Workers the heat and humidity. It definitely is football season despite that weather. and the Unemployed In fact my favored team and the local team are both 2 and 1. Once again last That all workers may receive Sunday the Redskins looked like a team that truly can compete this year. respect and protection of their Both offensively and especially defensively they looked good, beating a for- rights, and that the unemployed midable team, the Oakland Raiders. My Packers continued to struggle. They were expected to decimate the Bengals, who had yet to win a game and have may receive the opportunity to been rather hapless this year so far. But Green Bay was behind almost the contribute to the common good. entire game until some Aaron Rogers magic, which tied the game with 14 seconds remaining. It went into overtime where the Packers rallied to beat Cincinnati. The bigger news, however, seemed to be whether players would stand, kneel, sit or even show up for the National Anthem. I thought these Weekly Readings were supposed to be games of skill, but like the weather last week I was de- ceived, for they have become political statements. This all started last season when a player (from Wisconsin who was quarterback for the 49ers) made his statement by taking a knee in response to how Blacks have been treated by police. Some others followed his lead, although no one on the Packers had, until Sunday! Numerous players, coaches, and some owners, including Dan Snyder of the Redskins, reacted to a Tweet from our president concerning all of this. Sadly, the president used language that is unnecessary and crude. He did correctly observe that NFL Twenty-Sixth Sunday attendance and viewing audience numbers are down, for a number of you have told me you no longer watch or attend games because of all this. He in Ordinary Time also suggested that these players be fired if they are not going to support the Sunday anthem and our nation. Just as the players have a right to take a stand on this issue, it would make sense that the president also could. Thankfully, we Ez 18:25-28; Phil 2:1-11 or 2:1-5; have the freedom of expression in this country, just as we have the freedom Mt 21:28-32 of religion. Unfortunately, that particular freedom is often challenged today, so I suppose it shouldn’t surprise us that other freedoms are also called into Monday question. I really don’t want to spend too much time on this subject, but al- Zec 8:1-8; Mt 18:1-5, 10 ready have, so suffice it to say while many of the players have said this has become a matter of unity, I am not seeing a lot of unity here, really just the Tuesday opposite.
