Sie vergibt zu diesem Zweck jährlich bis zu drei Forschungsstipendien und ein Förderstipendium sowie alle drei Jahre den „Preis des Historischen Kollegs“. Die Forschungsstipendien, deren Verleihung zugleich eine Auszeichnung für die bisherigen Leistungen darstellt, sollen den berufenen Wissenschaftlern während eines Kollegjahres die Möglichkeit bieten, frei von anderen Verpflichtungen eine größere Arbeit abzuschließen. Professor Dr. Johannes Fried (Frankfurt/Main) war - zusammen mit Professor Dr. Jean- Marie Moeglin (Paris), Professor Dr. Paolo Prodi (Bologna) und Professor Dr. Heinrich August Winkler (Freiburg, jetzt Berlin) - Stipendiat des Historischen Kollegs im Kollegjahr 1990/1991. Den Obliegenheiten der Stipendiaten gemäß hat Johannes Fried aus seinem Ar­ beitsbereich ein Kolloquium zum Thema „Dialektik und Rhetorik im früheren und hohen Mittelalter. Rezeption, Überlieferung und gesellschaftliche Wirkung antiker Gelehrsamkeit vornehmlich im 9. und 12.Jahrhundert“ vom 26. bis 29. Juni 1991 im Historischen Kolleg ge­ halten. Die Ergebnisse des Kolloquiums werden m diesem Band veröffentlicht. Der­ artiges aber wägt der Nutzen für ein seligmachendes und schadenverhütendes Le­ ben ab. Mag die Logik auch sich selbst genügen, sie wurde“, so postulierte Johan­ nes, „für mehr erfunden.“1 Sie arbeite inquisitorisch und verfüge damit „über den Weg zu den Prinzipien aller Methoden“, aller „Zugänge“ (adviationes vel aditus).2 Johannes widmete eine ganze Schrift, sein „Metalogicon“, sein letztes philosophi­ sches Werk, der Erläuterung dieses Satzes und mit ihr der Verteidigung der Logik (die er, wie üblich, mit der Dialektik in eins setzte) in einer Umgebung, die un­ längst erst auf ihren Geschmack gekommen war. Entsprechend, wenn auch nicht in gleicher Weise ausführlich, würdigte er die Rhetorik. Nichts sei falscher, als ihre Gebote zu mißachten. „Wer sind sie, die unter den Mitbürgern glänzen, wer, die im Reichtum schwimmen, wer, die an Einfluß überragen und in allen Geschäften 1 „Quid sola dialéctica possit: Est tarnen quod solitaria pollicctur, et prestat solius gramma- ticae subnixa presidio. VIII Johannes Fried zum Erfolg gelangen, wenn nicht die Wortgewandten?“ ’ Rhetorik, die Lehre von der Beredsamkeit, steigere die natürliche Sprechfähigkeit, die deshalb durch Stu­ dium aufzubessern sei.4 Es lasse die Worte wohlklingender, treffender und effi­ zienter setzen als bloße Begabung. „Weisheit, die auf Worte verzichtet, nützt nichts; sie ist hinfällig und irgendwie kraftlos."3 Utilitarismus also auch hier. Der einstige Student, der fast alle bedeutenden zeitgenössischen Lehrer Frankreichs gehört hatte, verteidigte zwei erlernbare Disziplinen, die mit einem festen System von Regeln zum Wahrnehmen, Denken und Reden anleiteten. Die Schule vermit­ telte sie, und ihre Anwendung verhieß Erfolg, Reichtum und Macht. Moralist, der Johannes war, zielte er dabei keineswegs auf bloßes Karrieristentum oder Ge­ winnstreben, Er glaubte, der Wahrheit, irgendwie also auch Gott, näherzukom­ men, indem er Rhetorik, Dialektik und Gesellschaftsordnung aufeinander bezog. Doch woher nahm er die Überzeugung, daß dem tatsächlich so sei? Und wie wirkte sein Wissen auf die beiden Disziplinen und seine eigene Wahrnehmungs­ fähigkeit und Wahrnehmungsweise zurück? Die Argumente des gelehrten Mannes bewegten sich im Banne der Tradition. Ganz neu war keines. Gleichwohl, er hatte sie aktualisiert, und die eigene Erfah­ rung dürfte ihn gelehrt haben, daß der geschulte Redner und Dialektiker

    TRANSFER OF KNOWLEDGE — TRANSFER OF IDEAS — TRANSFER OF EXPERIENCES LATIN TRANSLATIONS OF GREEK TEXTS FROM THE 11TH TO THE 13TH CENTURY INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP 10–11 JUNE 2021, 16.00–19.00 (GMT+1) Organizers: Paraskevi Toma (University of Münster) Péter Bara (Hungarian Academy of Sciences) Realizing the fact that there are different factors that influence translations, we set the dynamics of linguistic and cultural exchange from Greek into Latin as the focus of our workshop. Even though the knowledge of Latin in Byzantium dropped notably after the sixth century, it was surrounded by Latin-speaking territories, while a multilingual community continued to exist in Italy. Furthermore, the Crusades strengthened the ties between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, a fact that unavoidably entailed knowledge transfer from Greek into Latin. The workshop will examine translators as mediators of knowledge and translated texts as sources of direct as well as indirect/intertextual knowledge. Rich material can be found, for example, in the fields of theology, medicine, and law. As regards translators, we will discuss their educational background and literacy, their networks and social status, along with their (in many cases) multicultural identity. Regarding translated texts, we will explore their literary genre as part of contemporary political or religious dialogue, identify Greek linguistic variants that were adapted by the Latin language, and finally consider the impact of translators themselves on their translations.     ENGLISH NAVAL STRATEGY INTHE 1590s SIMÓN ADAMS Profesor de Historia de la Universidad de Strathclyde Until quite recently, the Anglo-Spanish "War" in the period after the Armada of 1588 was one of the least studied subjects of the reign of Elizabeth. For many years, the standard narrative account of the 1590s was that published by the American historian E.P. Cheyney in two volumes in 1914 and 1926 (1). In the past decade, however, this situation has been transformed. Professor Wernham's edition of the List and Analysis ofState Papers Foreign Series (2) has been followed by his detailed study of military operations and diplomacy in the years 1588-1595 (3), and then by his edition of the documents relating to the "Portugal Voyage" of 1589 (4). Within the past two years, Professor MacCaffrey has published the final volume of his trilogy on Elizabeth's reign and Professor Loades his monograph on the Tudor Navy, while Dr. Hammer has completed his dissertation on the most controversial of the political figures of the decade, the 2nd Earl of Essex (5). Much therefore is a good deal clearer than it has been. Yet wider questions remain, particularly over the manner in which Elizabeth's government conducted the war with Spain. In their most recent work both Wernham and MacCaffrey argüe from positions they have established earlier: Wernham for a careful and defensive foreign and military policy, MacCaffrey for an essentially reactive one (6). The Spanish Match and Jacobean Political Thought, 1618-1624 Kimberley Jayne Hackett Ph.D University of York History Department July 2009 Abstract Seventeenth-century English political thought was once viewed as insular and bound by a common law mentality. Significant work has been done to revise this picture and highlight the role played by continental religious resistance theory and what has been termed 'classical republicanism'. In addition to identifying these wider influences, recent work has focused upon the development of a public sphere that reveals a more socially diverse engagement with politics, authority and opposition than has hitherto been acknowledged. Yet for the period before the Civil War our understanding of the way that several intellectual influences were interacting to inform a politically alert 'public' is unclear, and expressions of political opposition are often tied to a pre-determined category of religious affiliation. As religious tension erupted into conflict on the continent, James I's pursuit ofa Spanish bride for Prince Charles and determination to follow a diplomatic solution to the war put his policy direction at odds with a dominant swathe of public opinion. During the last years of his reign, therefore, James experienced an unprecedented amount of opposition to his government of England. This opposition was articulated through a variety of media, and began to raise questions beyond the conduct of policy in addressing fundamental issues of political authority. By examining the deployment of political ideas during the domestic crisis of the early 1620s, this thesis seeks to uncover the varied ways in which differing discourses upon authority and obedience were being articulated against royal government.

For scholars of St. Thomas Aquinas and the Middle Ages, the history of the introduction and story of the translation of the quoted text from St. John Damascene is a matter of undisputed interest. In particular, the cu- rious addition to the Damascene quote, not found in the translations cir- culating at the time Aquinas wrote the Prologue, nor even in the work of other contemparies, presents itself as an enigma. Although the practice of citation in the Middle Ages included taking some liberties from the text itself, it should be noted that this does not mean that it was done without rules or reason. Abstract: The work of the medieval translators from Greek to Latin was one of the important factors in the recovery of the medieval scientific thought and their practice. The rediscovery of the shared roots of culture and religion aroused great enthusiasm in Italy, and schools of translations were successively opened in Rome, Naples, Salerno, Pisa and Sicily. Its members recovered for the West lost Greek texts of the fathers of the Church and scientific-technical texts of Greek science. Keywords: Greek-Latin translators, religious and scientific texts, recovery of knowledge. The awareness of the widespread backwardness of the Latin West gradually took root among the scholars of the Early Middle Ages. In its different forms it pervaded cultural and scientific environments and even the sphere of religion. Gradually the Christians came to realize that they had lost the treasures of Greek patristic and hagiography and the works of Greek philosophy and science, and by the Early Middle Ages they saw the urgent need for Latin translations of the works of Greek philosophy and for the development of translations from Arabic .

Zijn plan om Horatius uit te geven, bleef steken bij de commentaar op de Ars poetica en verscheen pas postuum in 1608.3 Verder toonde Torrentius zich een verdienstelijk dichter die vlot weg kon met de verschillende versmaten uit de klassieke Latijnse poëzie. De eerste druk van deze Poemata Sacra verscheen bij Plantijn in Antwerpen in 1572, maar de steeds verder aangroeiende verzameling kende nog drie uitgaven, respectievelijk in 1575, 1579 en 1594. Naast Oden aan de vrienden uit de periode dat hij in Rome verbleef en gedichten naar aanleiding van historische gebeurtenissen als de slag bij Lepanto (1571), de moord op Willem de Zwijger (1584) en de inname van Antwerpen door Alexander Farnese (1585), ging Torrentius zich van langsom meer toeleggen op religieuze onderwerpen. Toen hij in de jaren tachtig steeds meer in beslag werd genomen door zijn beroepsbezigheden als rechterhand van de Luikse prins-bisschoppen en vanaf 1587 als tweede bisschop van Antwerpen, ging dat ten koste van zijn literaire activiteiten.
