DOWNEY – In an attempt to coordinate Downey’s entire volunteer force, the city will be hosting a volunteer meeting next month. The meeting is currently scheduled for Thursday, April 13 at 6 pm, and is to be hosted at the Barbara J Riley Community and Senior Center. The upcoming meeting is intended to gather input from local community organizations, non-profits and churches to help city officials establish specific volunteer opportunities to address community needs. One very outspoken supporter of the volunteer collaboration is still relatively fresh City Council member Rick Rodriguez, who has long shown a desire to inventory Downey’s volunteer and charitable organizations. “Because they do so much wonderful work around Downey, we need to coordinate their efforts,” said Rodriguez. “We are busting at the seams with volunteers. Church presents Good Friday re-enactment LONG BEACH – All Saints Anglican Church in Long Beach will present “Good Friday 5:15, A Walk Through Jersualem,” starting next week. Performances run consecutive Friday and Saturday evenings, starting March 24 and finishing April 8, from 7-9 p.m. The production is a reenactment of Jerusalem on Good Friday, just after Jesus dies on the cross. Admission is free and open to the public. Bill Austin, an animation teacher at Warren High School, played a significant role in making the production possible. “My inspiration for ‘Good Friday 5:15’ came from going to see ‘Journey to Bethlehem’ a few years back,” Austin said. “I was attending it with my wife, daughter, and another relative. I loved it very much. The idea of creating a world that you could walk into really appealed to me. “It was while I was at ‘Journey to Bethlehem’ about 3-4 years back that I ran in our former youth group leader, Donna Foster. She was taking pictures of everything and asked if I thought whether we could do something like this at All Saints Church.
