  • The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema
The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Ekky Imanjaya Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies December 2016 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally.

  • Back in Asia: the US's TPP Initiative and Its Implications for China
Southeast Asian Journal of Social and Political Issues, Vol. 1, No. 2, March 2012 | 126 Back in Asia: the US’s TPP Initiative and its Implications for China Zhang Zhen-Jiang 张振江 (Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China) Abstract Trans-Pacific Partnership develops from the Pacific Three Closer Economic Partnership (P3-CEP) initiated by Chile, Singapore and New Zealand in 2002 and joined by Brunei in 2005. The four countries finally finished their talks and singed the Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement (P4) on June 3rd, 2005. American President George W. Bush announced that the US would join TPP in late 2008. It was suspended by new American President Barrack Obama for his trade policy review. However, the US government restarted its joining efforts in late 2009 and was quickly joined by several other countries. This paper aims to investigate the origin, nature and development of TPP, analyze America’s motivations, and study its possible impacts upon the East Asian Regionalism in general and upon China in particular. Finally, the author calls for China to take the active policy to join the TPP negotiating process. Keywords: TPP, America’s Trade Policy, East Asian Regionalism, China Introduction On December 14 2009, the Office of the United States Trade Representative formally notified the Congress that Obama Administration is planning to engage with the “Trans-Pacific Partnership” (thereafter “TPP”). American government formally started the first round negotiation with Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam in March 15-18, 2010 in Melbourne. Up to now, seven rounds of negotiations have been held (Round 2 in San Francisco in June 11-18 2010, Round 3 in Brunei in October 7-8 2010, Round 4 in Auckland in December 6-8, 2010, Round 5 in Santiago in February 14-18 2011, Round 6 in Singapore in April 2011, and Round 7 in Ho Chi Minh City in June 19-24 2011).

SETTING HISTORY STRAIGHT? INDONESIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE NEW ORDER A thesis presented to the faculty of the Center for International Studies of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Sony Karsono August 2005 This thesis entitled SETTING HISTORY STRAIGHT? INDONESIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE NEW ORDER by Sony Karsono has been approved for the Department of Southeast Asian Studies and the Center for International Studies by William H. Frederick Associate Professor of History Josep Rota Director of International Studies KARSONO, SONY. M.A. August 2005. International Studies Setting History Straight? Indonesian Historiography in the New Order (274 pp.) Director of Thesis: William H. Frederick This thesis discusses one central problem: What happened to Indonesian historiography in the New Order (1966-98)? To analyze the problem, the author studies the connections between the major themes in his intellectual autobiography and those in the metahistory of the regime. Proceeding in chronological and thematic manner, the thesis comes in three parts. Part One presents the author’s intellectual autobiography, which illustrates how, as a member of the generation of people who grew up in the New Order, he came into contact with history. Part Two examines the genealogy of and the major issues at stake in the post-New Order controversy over the rectification of history. Part Three ends with several concluding observations. First, the historiographical engineering that the New Order committed was not effective. Second, the regime created the tools for people to criticize itself, which shows that it misunderstood its own society. Third, Indonesian contemporary culture is such that people abhor the idea that there is no single truth.

  • Portrait of General Imamura Presented to Him in 1942 by the Indonesian Artist Basuki Abdullah
Portrait of General Imamura presented to him in 1942 by the Indonesian artist Basuki Abdullah. GENERAL IMAMURA AND THE EARLY PERIOD OF JAPANESE OCCUPATION Mitsuo Nakamura Most post-war studies of Japanese policies in Southeast Asia during World War II are colored by the "moralistic" biases of their authors, which include apologists as well as critics.1 But in fact many of the situations and events for which criticism is levelled at the Japanese occupying forces arise not from anything specifical ly Japanese but from the general nature of a military government of occupation in wartime: whether that government is established by a "fascist" nation, as in the case of Japan, or a "democratic" one, as in the case of the United States.2 Military governments of occupation generally tend toward absolutism, and their rulers, backed by overwhelming force, often display an air of superiority and arrogance toward their subjects. Aid to combat units engaged in prosecuting the war becomes the supreme concern, while the civil rights of the civilian population are neglected. Utilization of the pre-existing forms of government in the occupied areas is pre ferred to imposing political and social changes, but often military governors find themselves facing barriers of cultural and linguistic difference which separate them from the governed. How much success the governors have in overcoming these barriers depends to a large extent on the personal character and training of the key adminis trative personnel. And however successful a military government may be in this regard, it is bound to invite resentment and hatred from the governed sooner or later.

Nationalism and National Culture in Indonesian Art Music and Performances (1900-2018): Reflections from Postcolonial Perspectives Aniarani Andita 5837456 MA Thesis Musicology Utrecht University First Reader/Supervisor: Dr. Floris Schuiling Second Reader: Dr. Barbara Titus 2018 ABSTRACT Partha Chatterjee (1997) affirms that the attitude to modernity in formerly-colonized societies is always deeply ambiguous, because the modernity that the colonizers used as justification for colonialism also taught the colonized societies of its values. Indonesia is not an exception; having been colonized for centuries by a European nation, Indonesian nationalism arose from the desire for freedom from the colonizer. However, this nationalism, and the subsequent attempts for the creation of national culture has have always been replete with ambivalencies—with negotiations between the need to create a distinct national identity and the values of European cultures as imposed in the colonial time. This thesis looks at the discourses of nationalism, national culture, and national music in Indonesia since the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day, and examine its manifestations in the field of Indonesian art music and its performances by Indonesian symphony orchestras. I argue that these discourses and actions have always been embedded with a legacy of colonialism in the form of xenocentrism in its broad sense: the tendency among Indonesians to continue to concern about the Western others as they try to define their own identity and culture. Moreover, through case studies such as the compositions Varia Ibukota by Mochtar Embut and Suvenir dari Minangkabau by Arya Pugala Kitti, and the practices of contemporary symphony orchestras Gita Bahana Nusantara and Jakarta City Philharmonic, I employ postcolonial theories to view those works as reflections of the entanglement between colonial history and Indonesia-specific visions, as well as as endeavours to decolonize the knowledge of European classical music and performance form.

  • FACTBOOK Korps Commandotroepen VERLEDEN - HEDEN - TOEKOMST Cover Quick Facts
