forEword What is the difference between a graphic designer and a “fine artist,” between he who gives highway signs their typeface and she whose canvasses and sculptures live in museums where admission must be paid? In terms of talent, possibly none. The difference is one of intimacy. We gaze up at our favorite paintings, gingerly circumnavigate the greatest sculptures—we literally put them on pedestals. But we hug our favorite books and records, and kiss their covers, and a particular typeface will forever conjure the road-sign at the turnoff to the summer lodge, that last turn that led to nirvana, the last week of August, the summer after tenth grade. I don’t want to meet the artist (the painter, the sculptor, the violin prodigy, the rock star), for if I did, she’d probably disappoint, and if she didn’t, I’d be tongue-tied. But the graphic designer? I want to clasp him to me, and ask how he did it, and say Thank you. No need to invite George Corsillo into your living room and offer him a nip or a puff—he’s been there all along. He’s been in your album crate since the early 1980s, showcasing John and Olivia at their Grease-iest, Luther Vandross at his sultriest, Benatar, Mellencamp, Yoko. In his toolbox, George always brings his analog chops, learned with the legendary book-jacket designer Paul Bacon; nobody has that facility with typeface or silkscreening who grew up only on computers. He brings, too, a party- down fierceness, a willingness to get his hands dirty (on the Grease jacket, those are George’s teeth marks on the pencil), a scavenger’s resourcefulness (the legs on the Tilt cover? his wife, Susan’s), and a tactful deference to the artist, masking, as needed, Vandross’s girth or Benatar’s pregnancy.

Sound Business: Great Women Of Gospel Music And The rT ansmission Of Tradition Abstract From the 1930s to the present, women have played instrumental and visible leadership roles in the remarkable growth of African American gospel music. Through both creative and entrepreneurial activities, these women paved the way for the expansion of an emotive sacred music expression from the worship practices of southern migrants to audiences around the world. This dissertation focuses on the work of three cultural trailblazers, Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, and Karen Clark Sheard, who stand out in the development of gospel music as virtuosic vocalists and pivotal figures whose sonic imprints can be heard both in sacred songs performed in churches and in American popular music. By deploying exceptional musicality, a deep understanding of African American Christianity, and an embrace of commercialism, the three singers have conserved and reworked musical elements derived from an African American heritage into a powerful performance rhetoric.

NATIONAL CLEAN OUT YOUR MEDICINE CABINET DAY (3rd Friday in April) You don’t want your next date to accidentally find that old fungus medication, do ya? But seriously, expired medicine can make you sick. Take all your old drugs back to the pharmacy where they’ll dispose of them safely and never, ever flush ‘em; that’s how they get into the water supply. NATIONAL EGGS BENEDICT DAY Eggs Benedict is named after a real-life guy! Lemuel Benedict was a stockbroker. In 1894, he went to the Waldorf Hotel in New York and ordered ‘buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon and a side of Hollandaise’. The restaurant staff was so impressed, they stole the recipe and put it on the menu - with a few minor changes. SATURDAY IS… HUSBAND APPRECIATION DAY That’s enough appreciation…now go clean the garage! NATIONAL HAIKU POETRY DAY Celebrating the Japanese art form. In case you skipped that class in middle school, a haiku is a 3 line poem with a syllable count of five-seven-five. EXAMPLE: Five syllables here… And seven syllables there… Are you happy now?! BLAH, BLAH, BLAH DAY Today’s the day you finally get around to doing all the things you’ve been nagged to do: clean the car, change that broken light bulb, quit smoking, blah-blah-blah… NATIONAL KICKBALL DAY Kickball was invented about 100 years ago in Cincinnati.
