Cost of living JINHUA

Statistics can be misleading. How much a person spends a month in Jinhua is determined by their lifestyle choices. Travelling around the city is very cheap. A taxi ride to the airport will cost 130 RMB. To make life even easier, there is also Didi (similar to Uber) and this is hugely cheaper than in the UK and on the whole, cheaper than taxis.

Fresh produce, such as fruit and veg, is available from local vendors at a much lower cost than in UK supermarkets. Utilities are also cheaper than in the UK.

However, home comforts and imported goods can understandably be expensive. For example; a 30g bar of Dairy Milk will cost you 15RMB and a big bag of Tyrells crisps 35RMB. However, owing to our proximity to Australia and New Zealand, imported wines are on a par with the UK. A Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc for example ranges from 85RMB to 150RMB.

Expats who would like to live cheaply can ‘rough it’ by eating at a small ‘local’ restaurant for dinner, for as little as 15 RMB. For those looking for a more high-end dining experience, there is a vast choice of upscale restaurants as well.

Shopping JINHUA

Jinhua reigns supreme when it comes to shopping, specially in that it called the Ocean of World shopping. Familiar (affordable) names such as Walmart, H&M, and Gap are also in abundance across the city. Many expats do their grocery shopping online. ‘Feiniu of RT Mart’ are all very reliable and well- stocked grocery delivery services. Delivery is very cheap, if not free, when you spend over a certain threshold, and the variety of stock on offer is impressive.

The Chinese have really taken to shopping online hence why Jinhua is home to the biggest online store in the world, Taobao. Think of eBay and Amazon on steroids and you are on the right lines! Visa and Mastercard are accepted online and in stores, but when you move to Jinhua your bank account will come with a Union Pay card – this is equivalent to Electron/Link in the UK and is one of the fastest growing payment systems in the world.

For the most part, Jinhua is a cash-free city where you pay for most day-to-day goods using a WeChat or AliPay app on your mobile phone. WeChat is similar to WhatsApp – only you can run your entire life through it!

As with a move to any country however, one must be aware and tolerant of the differences between one’s home culture and the culture in China.
