As firms realized the economy wasn’t going to bail them out, most turned to “management”—actively managing partner capacity, leverage, and costs—to get back to rising profitability. 2. “Management” has proven so effective it has undermined long‐held tenets of strategy: • The market is no longer consolidating—a firm doesn’t have to bulk up so as not to be on the wrong side of consolidation. • The market isn’t bifurcating by size or profitability— there are no such fault line firms need to be on one side of. • Mergers aren’t creating advantage: merged firms are under‐performing their peers. • Building out global footprints is weakening, not strengthening, domestic positions. 3 Takeaways for partners 1. Not much, as the numbers show. 2008 saw deal values and Contents volumes drop back to the level they were at three years ago with the credit crisis wreaking havoc on the fi nancial services industry. Section 1: M&A for Q408 hits 5-year lows; Asia-Pacifi c M&A overtakes North America for fi rst time The last quarter of 2008 saw plenty of M&A lows not seen for several years with 2,047 announced deals valued at $490bn globally – it was the worst quarter by p. 2 - 8: Global value since Q3 2004 ($343bn); and the worst fourth quarter since fi ve years ago by both value and volume (just over 2,000 deals valued at $367bn in Q4 2003). A preliminary investigation of the “Core Cities” and “Northern Way” spatial policy initiatives using multi- city corporate and commercial law firms Peter J. Taylor, Michael Hoyler, David M. Evans and John Harrison Department of Geography, Loughborough University Loughborough LE11 3TU, UK Abstract This paper reports a preliminary investigation into the economic efficacy of two spatial frameworks – English Core Cities and the Northern Way – recently promoted by national policy makers. We ask whether they are consistent with contemporary economic process in the UK space economy through analyses of commercial multi-city law firms. The latter are treated as an ‘indicator sector’ to define the contemporary UK space economy as practised by law firms. Within this new space of flows, the location strategies of the law firms do confirm the salience of the Northern Way (as trans-Pennine corridor) and Core Cities as part of a larger UK metropolitan space of flows. Conflating the two spatial frameworks leads us to identify hints of a rebalancing of London within a metropolitan UK space. A Manchester polycentric mega-city region is found to be the likely candidate for this role. This finding in no way impinges on London’s dominant global role and we conclude that perhaps mutuality between London and provincial cities is beginning to replace past negative dependency relations.
