CableFAX DailyTM Friday — October 4, 2013 What the Industry Reads First Volume 24 / No. 193 Number Crunching: USA Keeps Its Crown in 3Q 3Q ratings are in, and as per usual, USA came out on top in prime. The net averaged 2.8mln total viewers from July 1 through Sept 29. Strong numbers, but total viewers were down about 9% vs 3Q12. Nipping at USA’s heels was commercial-free, kids’ net Disney (2.5mln). TNT (2.3mln), History (2mln) and ESPN (2mln) completed the top 5 cable nets in prime. Similar to general entertainment net USA, TNT’s total viewers in prime were down about 7% for the Q. But it still did just fine, claiming 17 of basic cable’s Top 25 drama telecasts for Q3 2013 among total viewers (11 of those spots were for “Rizzoli & Isles). In total day, Disney and Nick were virtually tied, with Disney averaging 1.79mln total viewers and Nick at 1.76mln. Disney had the advantage among kids 6-11 (718K vs 500K) and 2-11 (1mln vs 931K). While AMC didn’t crack the top 10 nets in prime, “Breaking ” helped its prime ratings jump 27% over 3Q12 to 1.3mln total viewers. Other gainers include ESPN, which rose 10% to 2mln in the Q, Discovery (+16%, 1.3mln), Bravo (+12% to 968K). Nick at Nite had a nice bump, up 36% to 1.08mln. OWN’s ratings momentum continued, with the net up 59% (530K viewers). The news nets took a tumble in the Q, which isn’t surprising given that 3Q12 was just before the Nov presidential election. An exception was HLN, which continues its transformation from a straight news net to more lifestyle and viewpoint programming. HLN was up 19% but still in the 300K-range for P2+ (367K to be exact). It marked the first time in 4 years that HLN posted double-digit gains in the 3rd straight Q this year. The last time HLN had sustained, double digit growth for three quarters was Q209. Fox News dipped 19% to 1.6mln viewers. CNN was down 12% to 547K, while MSNBC declined 39% to 580K. Other nets posting declines included Comedy Central (-12% to 547K total viewers), Syfy (-16%, 1.2mln) and Nick Jr (-45%, 464K—the net flips to a mom block at night). truTV, one of the nets Cable One wanted to drop in its fight with Turner, was down 22% in total viewers in 3Q to 906K. Capitol Hill: C-SPAN and the cable news nets turned to the US Capitol Thurs after reports of shots being fired outside. At deadline, reports indicated that police apparently fired the shots after a female driver led them on a high- speed chase that began at the White House. She was pronounced dead late in the day. C-SPAN had live video of police activity accompanied by broadcasts from DC news radio station WTOP. The lockdown on the Hill was lifted

C-SPAN’s Capitol producer and some field techs were in the Capitol and subject to the temporary lockdown. Several other reporters and producers were in the same situation. NCTA said it confirmed that it had no staffers on the Hill during the lockdown. Broadband Meter: Comcast expanded its 300 GB a month cap for all of its Xfinity Internet tiers in Huntsville and Mobile, AL; Augusta and Savannah, GA; Central KY; Jackson, MS; Knoxville and Memphis, TN; and Charleston, SC. Subs pay $10 for each additional 50GB. Economy Plus subs can enroll in the new Flexible-Data Option, designed for users who typically consume 5GB of data or less per month. The move is part of the company’s continuous initia- tive to offer subs more flexible ways to manage data plans, a spokesman said. Broadband caps started as early as ’08 when MSOs and telcos initiated usage trials. Mediacom’s the latest operator to join the game. It started migrat- ing its residential Internet subs to usage-based plans earlier this month. Cable WiFi: Austin, the city between Google Fiber and AT&T U-Verse, is getting WiFi from Time Warner Cable. The MSO now offers 900 hotspots to TWC subs with Standard Internet or above for free, and on a pay-as-you-go basis to non-subs in the area. There will be 1,350 WiFi hotspots in the city by year-end with more to come in ’14. The MSO is also the WiFi provider for the ACL music festival in the area, offering free 2-week WiFi con- nections until Oct 13. Verizon FiOS: Verizon is killing its Media Manager PC/mac app starting Nov 1, because of the low number of customers using the Media Manager app to sync personal data via the Flex View Library feature, the telco said this week. Flex View On Demand movies purchased using Media Manager will remain available across platforms. OTT: Netflix is being sued, again, by the same company. OpenTV, which was acquired by Switzerland-based Kudelski Group in ’09, filed the suit in a district court in the Netherlands. It claims the streaming service infringes video software firm OpenTV’s patents, seeking relief to enjoin Netflix from further infringement by its recently launched service in the country. Netflix couldn’t be reached immediately for comment. US-based OpenTV counts major ops like Time Warner Cable, Comcast and Charter as customers. It 1st sued Netflix in Dec in a DE district court over patent infringement. -- Netflix launched an app update to enable HD streaming on anyApple devices that have been upgraded to iOS 7. The app also allows direct streaming over AirPlay, which allows users to choose content on an iPhone or iPad and play on Apple TV via WiFi. Programming: USA booked a 16-ep, 5th season of “Covert Affairs.” Season 4 of the spy drama series ends on Nov 21. -- FEARnet wants to scare viewers in every way: In addition to its 24-hour “Trick ‘R Treat” marathon on its linear net, it added the programming block on VOD. The net also launched an online program with details of its Oct programming schedule, Halloween polls, free themed movies and downloadable content. -- Comcast is load- ing up past seasons of CBS shows on its Xfinity Streampix and Xfinity On Demand. The expanded partnership also means more current primetime shows for free through Xfinity On Demand and online. --Bloomberg debuts “C-Suite with Jeffrey Hayzlett,” a weekly primetime show that looks at companies shaping the global business landscape (Oct 8, 9:30pm). The premiere spotlights Dunkin Donuts, with upcoming eps featuring MGM, Crossfit and Heineken. On the Circuit: Columbia University renamed its soccer venue after Mediacom founder/chmn/CEO Rocco Com- misso, recognizing his contributions to the Lions soccer program as a player and alumnus. The dedication was scheduled to take place on the field Thurs between the Columbia Women and Men’s Soccer matches vs. the Univer- sity of Pennsylvania, followed by a reception. Commisso, who graduated from the university’s School of Engineering and Applied Science and later business school, was part of the ’67 Columbia freshman soccer team and was co-cap- tain of the ’70 varsity men’s squad, the 1st Columbia soccer team to compete in the NCAA Men’s Soccer Champion- ship Tournament. The chief exec co-founded and chaired the alumni advisory group Friends of Columbia Soccer. The university has awarded an annual Men’s Soccer Prize in his name for more than a decade. -- Recipients of the Touch- stones of Leadership Awards will be honored during the annual PowerBrokers Breakfast sponsored by the WICT DC/ CableFAX DailyTM Friday, October 4, 2013 ● Page 3 BUSINESS & FINANCE Baltimore Chapter. Basic Cable Rankings (9/23/13-9/29/13) We all know that AMC’s “Mad Men” is meticulously well-groomed—much like its central Mon-Sun Prime character Don Draper, played to perfection by Jon Hamm. But sometimes an actor needs to stretch out of his comfort zone. And it seems Hamm was inspired to do just that after 1 ESPN 2.4 2408 reading Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov’s pseudo-autobiographical “Young Doctor’s 2 TBSC 1.8 1786 Notebook” about a newbie physician muddling through at a rural Russian hospital in 3 DSNY 1.6 1563 1917. Trust us: This TV adaptation, aired first in Britain and picked up in the states by 4 AMC 1.3 1281 4 USA 1.3 1252 , is far messier than Mad Men. “I read the book and I thought, ‘Well, this isn’t a Ovation 4 FOXN 1.3 1249 world that I see very often’,” Hamm told CableFAX. “It’s darkly comic. It’s very explicit in its 4 NFLN 1.3 929 gore… It’s very medically realistic for the turn of the century in nowheresville Russia.” In a 8 HIST 1.2 1155 twist that Hamm describes as “magical realism,” the show places his character in scenes 9 TNT 1.0 952 with his younger self (played by Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame) as he remembers 9 DSE 1.0 70 11 A&E 0.9 911 his earlier experiences. Hamm has always credited Draper as the role of a lifetime, but 11 HGTV 0.9 909 he also seems eager to branch out, if for no other reason than to prepare for Mad Men’s 11 ADSM 0.9 901 inevitable conclusion in ’15. “The good part of being an actor is to do different things,” he 14 FX 0.8 832 says. “The weird thing is that once you have success doing one thing, people want you 14 LIFE 0.8 764 to continue doing that one thing.
